How are US tariffs and the global trade war affecting Emirati consumers?

Campaign ME07-05-2025
Emirati consumers have opened up about the perceived impact of recent global trade tariff shifts, particularly US tariffs on Chinese goods, as well as how it affects their expectations around the prices of goods, product variety, and overall market and consumer sentiment.
In a recent SixthFactor survey, 100 UAE nationals who were part of a proprietary panel of UAE-based respondents provided a unique view into the local citizen mindset, particularly in a region where national sentiment often reflects broader socio-economic priorities.
When asked about the methodology of the survey, SixthFactor revealed to Campaign Middle East that it used a structured online survey approach, combining quantitative metrics with attitudinal questions to uncover patterns in sentiment, awareness, and expectations. The study was fielded in April 2025 and captured real-time responses to ongoing global developments in trade.
Key Emirati consumer sentiment findings on the fallout of US tariffs
More than three out of every four Emirati respondents (77 per cent) indicated strong confidence in the UAE's ability to benefit from current global trade disruptions.
The survey results also reflect strategic consumer awareness and a mixture of optimism with realism, with consumers waiting patiently for signals from government authorities and retail marketers before changing their purchase patterns.
'While expectations are positive, the market is waiting for signals – especially from local authorities or large retailers before making big buying or investment decisions. That highlights the opportunity for businesses and policymakers to step in with clarity and guidance, and help translate macro shifts into local confidence,' said Himanshu Vashishtha, CEO, SixthFactor Consulting.
Of the UAE nationals surveyed, 42 per cent of consumers shared that they expect prices to decrease due to increased supply.
Additionally, 33 per cent of the Emiratis surveyed anticipate greater product variety, while 17 per cent are concerned some products might become harder to find.
'That's a strong vote for anticipated consumer value. There's also realism – 17 per cent foresee potential shortages, and a smaller group (8%) don't expect to be affected at all. In essence, consumers are hopeful about lower prices, but are watching closely to see if that promise materialises,' Vashishtha added.
UAE sectors expected to benefit most from increased trade activity following the US tariffs and the ensuing global trade war include online shopping, retail and and malls, manufacturing, warehousing, and shipping and logistics.

How Abu Dhabi's population soared without rough growing pains

When oil engineer Alan Horan came to Abu Dhabi in the spring of 1960, the photographs he took with his trusty Zeiss Contessa camera captured images of a society on the brink of unprecedented change. Camels carrying firewood across Al Maqta causeway, people living in barasti huts made of palm fronds and mile upon mile of sparsely populated coastline offered a glimpse of a way of life that was about to change forever. Fast forward to 2024 and the sheer scale of that change would have surprised even those who were planning a modern future for Abu Dhabi at that time. According to figures released this week by Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi, the emirate's population crossed the four-million mark for the first time after a 7.5 per cent surge last year. Over the past 10 years, Abu Dhabi's population has increased by 51 per cent, rising from 2.7 million in 2014 to more than 4.1 million today. Such change has proved good for Abu Dhabi. The energy and dynamism brought by this growing population of citizens and residents alike helps to drive the emirate's economy; census results released last year found that the number of people in employment rose by 82 per cent since 2011 to reach more than 2.5 million individuals. But like all major change, it has required diligent management. Rapid population growth and urbanisation bring about great opportunity but also some challenges. Other cities going through similar change have experienced strain on their housing supply and environmental stresses, for example on their water resources. There is plenty of evidence, however, that Abu Dhabi has been considering and planning to mitigate such challenges for some time. Plan Abu Dhabi 2030, to take one example, is a forward-looking, long-term strategy for balanced urban growth, one that considers the emirate's environment, land use and transport systems. The increasing development of the capital's islands, such as Fahid Island – where sales of residential developments generated more than Dh3.5 billion ($953 million) last month – will give room for this increasing population to grow. Even the minutiae of everyday life – so-called personal admin – is supported by the city's exceptional digital infrastructure, such as its successful Tamm app. Few capitals are as young as Abu Dhabi, and the city has had the advantage of being able to plan and shape its future almost from scratch, embracing modernity without sacrificing its identity and heritage Significantly, coupled with Abu Dhabi's rising population is the fact that more and more of people who are choosing to put down long term roots in the UAE. Such a development does not spring from nowhere; the emirate's evolving visa rules, its advanced education and healthcare systems, as well as the possibility of buying property – to use either as a home or as an asset – all make the UAE a long-term home. Few capitals are as young as Abu Dhabi, and the city has had the advantage of being able to plan and shape its future almost from scratch, embracing modernity without sacrificing its identity and heritage. As it continues to manage this transformation, a process that never really ends, older cities will be able to learn from this example of 21st-century urban development. It is possible that, in 50 years' time, future Abu Dhabi residents will look at photographs taken of their emirate today and wonder if we too we able to grasp the changes that were coming.

Major acquires prime plot at mega RAK commercial development

UAE-based Major Developers has entered into a deal with Marjan, the master developer of freehold properties in Ras Al Khaimah, to acquire a prime plot of land at its mega commercial development - RAK Central. As per the agreement, Major will be developing a mixed-use project at the RAK Central site with a built-up area of 265,000 sq ft. The entire work will be completed by Q4 2028. This marks Major Developers' second venture in Ras Al Khaimah thus reinforcing their commitment to the northern emirate's high-growth commercial and investment ecosystem, said senior company officials at the signing ceremony held at the Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island. Following the successful launch of their flagship project, Manta Bay at Al Marjan Island, this latest venture underscores Major's continued confidence in the emirate's economic vision and its infrastructure-driven approach to sustainable growth, they stated. Speaking on the occasion, Marjan CEO Abdulla Al Abdouli said: "With RAK Central, we've created a mega development that is structurally aligned with regional growth, global investment patterns, and national diversification goals." RAK Central is a meticulously planned business district designed to be the commercial nucleus of Ras Al Khaimah, offering rare investment fundamentals: 100% foreign ownership, low taxation, and high yield potential. Its strategic location and smart design make it one of the most compelling investment zones in the region. Grounded in a 'Work–Live–Play' philosophy, the district combines institutional infrastructure with human-centric planning to create a cohesive urban ecosystem, stated Al Abdouli. "Major Developers' decision to invest in this multi-use destination is testament to Ras Al Khaimah's growing clout as a durable economic engine driving further progress. We welcome their participation in the evolution of RAK Central and look forward to a landmark addition to its evolving identity," he added. Major Developers CEO Andrei Charapenak said: "RAK Central represents a uniquely calibrated convergence of foresight, infrastructure, and regional alignment. As such we are excited to drive Ras Al Khaimah's growth narrative through this multi-dimensional new project that is set to shape one of the UAE's most profitable and forward-thinking economic hubs." "We look forward to further driving this visionary project through our landmark architecture, experience, and performance," he added. RAK Central masterplan offers three million sq ft of rentable office space, more than 4,000 residential apartments, four hotels with a capacity surpassing 1,000 keys, multiple parks and green spaces in addition to various retail and entertainment facilities and several interconnected buildings with over 1,000 parking spaces for visitors. Work on RAK Central HQ, which will serve as the main business complex, is currently underway and expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027. -TradeArabia News Service Copyright 2024 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
