Thirteen days after the Forest Department busted a deer poaching case and arrested a 31-year-old private vehicle driver, hunting spotted deer in Bannerghatta and Kolar forest area for meat, the Forest Department officials on Saturday approached the jurisdictional Bannerghatta police seeking help to probe further.
The Forest Department officials will continue probing the case under Wildlife Act, but they have no provision to probe the case under Arms Act, to ascertain the source of weapons. Meanwhile, the accused who has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody is out on bail.
The forest officials on June 29 caught Pratap and seized two cars on Bannerghatta-NICE Road junction, a bike, two guns, and large quantities of deer meat. While Pratap was arrested on the spot, three of his associates managed to escape and efforts are on to track them now .
The raid was carried out on the directions of Forest Minister Ishwar Khandre, that a gang was illegally hunting deer in the forests of Kolar and Bannerghatta and selling the meat.
Inside, officials discovered the carcasses of four spotted deer and one wild boar. The officials based on his information raided a godown in C.K. Palya where he had stored more meat.
A raid on the shed uncovered additional deer carcasses and meat, along with a bike, another car, one double-barrel and one single-barrel gun, 10 live cartridges, and a total haul of nine deer, one wild boar, and 74 kg of meat, the official said.
The shed owner, Bheemappa, along with associates Balaraju and Ramesh, are currently absconding. A case has been filed under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act.
The officials have now handed over the seized weapons to the Police along with the complaint since the forest officials do not have provision to probe under Arms Act. The accused was reportedly using foreign made weapon and the probe will be on ascertain the source of weapon, a police officer said. Since the accused is presently out on bail, efforts are on to summon him again for questioning.

Gun under greens: Police seize illegal arms from shop disguised as ‘Sabji Waale' in Purnia

Patna: In a bizarre turn of events, a vegetable shop in Purnia district was found to be a front for a sophisticated arms smuggling racket. Acting on a tip-off, the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and the district police carried out a joint raid on Monday, uncovering a large cache of illegal weapons and live cartridges from a shop named 'Sabji Waale' — a seemingly ordinary vegetable vendor. The operation led to the arrest of an alleged arms smuggler, Kunal Kumar Singh, a resident of Purnia College Road under Haat police station area. From his shop, the police recovered the breech block (rotating bolt) of an AK-47 rifle, a German-made Beretta pistol, and 440 rounds of live cartridges. According to officials, Kunal had a criminal history involving multiple arms smuggling charges and had previously served four jail terms under the Arms Act. Notably, he was released just two months ago from Beur central jail in Patna. Police records show that at least five cases are registered against him across Patna, Munger, and Purnia. Purnia SP, Sweety Sehrawat, said police received an input that Kunal, already wanted in multiple cases, was continuing his illegal trade by concealing it behind a vegetable shop front. "On the basis of the intelligence, a special raiding team led by Sadar SDPO-I, Pankaj Kumar Sharma, was formed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The shop was surrounded and searched. During interrogation, Kunal reportedly confessed that he, along with his partner Amit Kumar alias Roshan, had been operating the illegal arms business by disguising it as a vegetable trade. He admitted to procuring weapons and ammunition from outside the state and selling them through the shop. Police have launched a drive to nab other members of the network.

Suspend Cop Who Did Not Act In SC/ST Act Case: Madras High Court

Chennai: The Madras High Court has ordered the Director General of Police to suspend the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kottakuppam range for failing to take appropriate action in a case filed under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The case pertains to a land dispute in Vanur, Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, between Senthamarai, from the Scheduled Caste community, and Veerasami from another community. The district court had ruled in favour of Senthamarai, and the High Court upheld the ruling. However, Kesavan, from a different community, later claimed ownership of the land and allegedly threatened Senthamarai and his family. Despite a complaint filed in 2023 at the Vanur police station, no action was taken. In 2024, when a relative of Senthamarai went to inspect the land, he was abused with casteist slurs, physically assaulted, and his phone was snatched by Kesavan. Though a case was registered under the SC/ST Act, police allegedly failed to act, while a counter-complaint from Kesavan led to a case being filed against seven members of Senthamarai's side. Senthamarai submitted a plea demanding action against the police officer for bias and inaction. After hearing arguments, Justice P. Velmurugan observed that the DSP had acted in a one-sided manner and did not conduct a proper investigation. The court today directed the DGP to suspend the officer and submit a report to the court. The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
