My 6-Year-Old Son Drowned In Our Pool. Here's What I Wish I Had Known To Keep Him Safe.
I'm still overwhelmed with emotion when I think back to that horrible day in 2007, the day that changed our lives forever. Each traumatic detail is etched into my memory ― the chlorine scent, the reflection of the late afternoon sun on the pool, the sweaty humidity, the piercing screams. The chaos of my son's drowning death comes rushing back in a wave of indescribably intense pain.
It was a searing July afternoon, just two months after our fourth child, Sydney, was born. We had just moved into our dream home, and the family swam and played in our brand-new backyard pool. Zachary, then 6, showed off his swimming skills (thanks to an excellent program at his summer camp). Little did we know an unexpected tragedy beyond our wildest imagination was about to unfold.
We believed we'd done everything to follow measures to keep our family safe. The pool was in full compliance with town safety codes that mandated fencing and door alarms for entrances to the pool area. Our children had taken swimming lessons; they were strong and comfortable in the water and always closely supervised.
We couldn't know that the pool's drain cover was defective and had become loose, removing the barrier between swimmers and the powerful vacuum pump that can exert hundreds of pounds of sucking water pressure. In an instant, the strong suction from the drain had trapped Zachary's arm, holding him underwater. We were unable to free him until we were able to shut down the power to the pool.
In the months that followed his death, we reeled from our loss. We tried to make sense of it and wondered how we could recover as a family and give meaning to a young life cut short so unfairly. The more we learned about water safety statistics ― that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children between the ages of 1 and 4 and is the second-leading cause of death for children younger than 14 ― the more we knew we wanted to prevent other families from ever having to experience the loss of a child from drowning.
With Zachary as our inspiration, we formed The ZAC Foundation a few years later. Over the last decade, the foundation has provided free swim camps for more than 20,000 kids around the country (especially in urban areas), has awarded grants for water safety education and research, and fostered partnerships to develop community-based drowning prevention plans in four large cities. Importantly, The ZAC Foundation has contributed toward the development of a national Water Safety Action Plan, designed to educate everyone (from homeowners to aquatic center personnel) about best practices to promote water safety and prevent drowning. Our entire family has been engaged from Day 1 on this journey to build the foundation. So it was no surprise that Henry said, at my suggestion, that he was 'all in' to become a lifeguard.
Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the American Lifeguard Association reported a whopping 40% to 50% staffing shortage at swimming areas across the country. These are well-paying jobs requiring skill and grit. I was confident that Henry ― a very strong, skilled swimmer and someone hyper-aware of the importance of water safety ― would make a highly competent lifeguard.
On the first day of his training, Henry had to dive to the bottom of the deep end, retrieve a brick and swim with it to the shallow end. Even though he was strong and played sports, he found it hard to do, and at least two of his fellow students couldn't complete the task. When Henry came home and told us about the exercise, we couldn't help but wonder if we had made the right decision. Would he be able to handle the physical rigor and emotional stress of this job? And could we?
Getting safety-certified wasn't easy. Henry nearly missed his sister's eighth-grade graduation due to lifeguard training. But he persevered, earned his certification and was hired at a pool in our community. From the get-go, he was hyper-vigilant.
On his first day at the pool, he surprised his peers and supervisor by proactively asking them to locate the safety equipment. For Henry, water safety was not an abstraction. It was urgently real. He fully understood the importance of safety training and safe pool management.
As statistics bear out, drowning incidents happen all the time ― even when lots of safety precautions have been taken. It is terribly easy (even typical) for a parent or caregiver to become distracted while watching toddlers play in the kiddie pool and, even worse, while also trying to keep an eye on their older kids in the main pool. It happens!
For lifeguards, unanticipated dangers lurk everywhere. Many pools are overcrowded, and it can be difficult to monitor children who become hidden. In larger pools, sightlines are often obscured by columns and curves. Glare on the water can mask danger. And unanticipated distractions for the lifeguard can be especially risky.
Despite warnings from well-intentioned friends in the drowning prevention movement, the pitfalls and risks (emotional and otherwise) never overwhelmed Henry. I feel deeply touched by his seriousness and courage, given the tragedy we had lived through with Zachary.
By the end of the summer, the closest Henry came to rescuing someone was when he offered to help an older gentleman navigate the pool stairs on his way out. The man gruffly rebuffed the offer, but Henry stood nearby to make sure that the man was able to safely hold his footing.
No family should ever have to endure the loss of a child. When a parent turns to me, with fear and sympathy in their eyes, they will often ask how they can learn from Zachary's loss and prevent this from happening to them. We share easy-to-remember lifesaving tools, like the ABCDs of drowning prevention.
There should always be an Adult present with eye-to-eye contact on the child swimming. Barriers, like fences and gates, are a must for restricting children's access to the water. Families should enroll in Classes ― swim lessons for kids and CPR training for adults. Drains should be regularly inspected for broken and/or loose covers. And proper lifesaving Devices, i.e. U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, should be worn at all times in open water.
After our family's devastating loss, I never would have imagined that my other children would take on what has become my life's work. Maybe Henry didn't realize what the impact would be for me when he agreed to try lifeguarding, but his decision made me deeply proud. His willingness to be vulnerable and address our family's trauma head-on is a source of strength and hope.
During the year of Zachary's 21st birthday, I look back and feel grateful for life's lessons learned and the opportunity to hopefully prevent a tragic loss for others.

Grandad cycling 250 miles for baby loss charity
A grandfather is cycling 400km (250 miles) in 24 hours to help people who have experienced child loss. Kevan Collins, 62, from Diss in Norfolk, embarked on the challenge to raise money for Angels and Rainbows, a Suffolk-based pregnancy and baby loss support group. Mr Collins set off on Saturday to ride from Diss to London, riding on to Dunwich Beach in Suffolk through the night, and back to Diss. "I have recently been made a grandfather to young Henry who spent 10 days on life-support, and I dread to think what it would have felt like [to lose him]," he said. Mr Collins took up cycling during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the challenge he planned to ride a "normal" 11-speed bike with no power-assistance. "When I came up with this idea back in February it was to be for an eye charity because I nearly lost my sight," he said, speaking to the BBC while catching a break in Great Dunmow, Essex. "But, I met up with Angels and Rainbows through friends... and I thought, you know what, I have to do this for them." The charity, based in Lowestoft, provides counselling and support to those affected by pregnancy or baby loss. Mr Collins said his goal was to raise £1,500 so those in need of support did not have to face financial barriers during that difficult time. PAR talks pharmacy bill, possible Medicaid cuts
(Special to the American Press) Prescription costs and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) were a target at the tail end of the 2025 legislative session that ended earlier this month. In the aftermath, three lawmakers joined the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana on a webinar last week to discuss the regular session: Senate President Cameron Henry, House Criminal Justice Vice Chair Vanessa LaFleur and House Appropriations Chairman Jack McFarland. Several bills were discussed, including House Bills 264 and 358. These bills focus on PBMs, the middlemen between drug manufacturers and health insurance providers. HB 264, which was passed by the state senate, places new restrictions on PBMs to ensure transparent practices and increase pharmaceutical savings for customers. The legislation requires PBMs to pass rebates and discounts onto customers and prohibits PBMs from sending customers to their pharmacies. The bill, HB 358, was halted in the state senate in the last hours of the regular legislative session after the state senate opted to not introduce the legislation. HB 358 would have prohibited the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy from renewing or granting permits for pharmacies owned or operated by PBMs, ultimately banning PBMs from owning retail pharmacies in Louisiana. HB 358's provisions would not have taken effect until Jan. 1, 2027. Henry said the long implementation period gave some lawmakers pause, stating the bill died at the state senate primarily because the bill 'didn't go through the normal legislative process.' 'There wasn't committee hearings on the senate side of the house side, no public testimony, the most basic things you need to do when you're doing something of this magnitude that's going to affect literally everyone across the state,' he explained. 'At the end, that late day, being that late in the sessions, having an implementation date that long out, members really feeling uncomfortable … let's study the effect of this.' Proponents of the bill believe the move will lead to lower pharmaceutical drug costs. But those opposed said the closure of pharmacies in Louisiana would disrupt healthcare, worsen health outcomes and increase drug costs for patients, according to a Pharmaceutical Care Management Association release. Gov. Jeff Landry took to social media the day after the legislative session ended to declare his plans for a special session to 'lower your drug prices.' Henry said a special session to address HB 358 is unlikely. The state senate did pass a resolution requiring the Louisiana Department of Health to study the potential impacts of HB 358, which must be completed before the 2026 regular legislative session in March. Federal Medicaid Changes However, Henry said to expect a special session if the over $90 billion cuts to Medicaid included in the 'Big Beautiful Bill' is passed with no implementation period. Nationally, there are particular concerns about the $400 billion cut to provider taxes that fund Medicaid for 49 states. For Louisiana, the loss could total $4 billion, which would have 'devastating' effects on rural hospitals and medical providers, he said. 'We can't handle a huge drop immediately. What we'd do there would not be pleasant, but we have to do it.' House Criminal Justice Vice Chair Vanessa LaFleur echoed Henry, stating that budget cuts would have to be made in special session if the Medicaid funding is immediately pulled. 'As much as I don't like the idea, if it happens the way we anticipate, we'll be back in special, we'll be making cuts because we have to. It's just the unknown.' Henry has been in touch with U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, and U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise to warn them of the potential negative impact of Medicaid cuts on the state. 'They're aware of it, but they're also aware that the rest of the country wants changes,' he said. 'The idea of waste, fraud and abuse sounds good, but it all depends on how you define it.' A two-to-three-year implementation period with the opportunity for amendment is 'the most realistic thing we can ask our delegation.'

The secret ingredient you've been looking for all your life? It grows (practically) everywhere
'It's all about the fresh herbs,' he said, gazing into my eyes as he minced a pile of minuscule thyme leaves without glancing down. 'He' was my boyfriend, Henry, then the poissonier ('fish guy') at Lutèce, one of the most acclaimed restaurants in New York City at the time, and very French. We were at Henry's house in Bridgehampton, and he was making — of all things — tuna salad. Henry's tuna salad consisted of standard-issue canned tuna, Hellman's (a.k.a. Best Foods) mayonnaise, a spoonful of Dijon mustard, a squeeze of lemon juice, a few dashes of Tabasco, a big spoonful of sweet relish, finely chopped red onion and celery, kosher salt and, finally, the magic, the 'secret ingredient' we're all always looking for: fresh herbs! In this instance: thyme and Italian parsley. Fresh herbs are the unsung heroes of the kitchen that make your food sing. Woody herbs such as rosemary and thyme add a layer of flavor to roasted meats and other vegetables as well as to soups, stews and stocks. But the focus here and now, in the height of summer, is on soft herbs: those bright, sprightly greens with tender stems that you see locked up in plastic clamshells at grocery stores and piled abundantly at farm stands. They are the game changers. Each herb has its own story to tell, but collectively, these herbs, including (but not limited to) basil, parsley, mint, chives, tarragon, cilantro, dill, oregano, marjoram and chervil, can be used for a specific recipe, and they can also be used improvisationally and with creative abandon. I like to grab a fistful of whatever I have and cut them with scissors directly over whatever I'm making — a green salad, a salad of canned beans, or onto roasted vegetables or baked potatoes — or potatoes cooked in any way. You can finely chop them and stir them into mayonnaise or a vinaigrette. One of my favorite things to do is to make an herb-based condiment such as the Argentine chimichurri, or the bright, herbaceous French pistou or this spicy Asian, herby hybrid Sichuan chimichurri. During summer, when basil grows like a weed and is more fragrant than ever, classic basil pesto is a no-brainer. (I know people are getting all creative with pesto made with carrot tops and other greens, but have you ever tasted a carrot top? There's a reason pesto is made with basil.) A spoonful of any of those takes something simple, like grilled steak, chicken or fish to make into the kind of finished dish your friends will ask you the recipe for. Spoon the condiments into soup and you might never be able to have soup without a fresh herb condiment swirled into it again. And the good news is, this isn't like a $200-bottle-of-balsamic-vinegar kind of secret. Fresh herbs are cheap. Here in Southern California, with the exception of cilantro, which sprouts and goes to seed really quickly, and tarragon, which, like so many things French, has a reputation for being temperamental, fresh herbs are easy to grow year-round. Kathy Delgado, who owns the beloved Vintageweave (her interiors shop used to be on Third Street near the Grove; now she operates the business out of her home studio in Long Beach), has fresh herbs in charming vintage vessels throughout her French farmhouse-inspired garden. She swears by a mix of quality potting soil and chicken or cow manure. 'It only smells for a day,' she assures us. Once you've planted yours — or brought a bunch (or bunches) home from the market — the possibilities are endless. I am not a deft dill user, so I'm excited to try this Slow-Roasted Salmon with Dill and Lemon Salsa Verde. And since I'm all for maximum flavor with the least amount of effort (especially for summer meals), I appreciate the whole herbs added haphazardly over this Whole Grilled Branzino. And I love the way cilantro, mint and Thai basil leaves are added whole and abundantly, as if one of the 'lettuces,' to Sandy Ho's Napa Valley Chicken Salad. What I love about this recipe is just how simple it is: just a few ingredients, all speaking loudly and clearly for themselves. Use the best olive oil you can find, more salt than you think you should, and don't measure the herbs. Just grab a handful of whatever you have and use scissors to chop way more than the 3 tablespoons called for over the squash and the time: 45 minutes. Serves 4. Fines herbes sounds a little too French and fancy for my style, but, as it turns out, it's just a combination of three ordinary herbs — parsley, chives, tarragon (very French, slightly sweet, with an anise-like flavor) — and one you might not have used before, chervil (a delicate leafy herb with a flavor between parsley and tarragon; if you can't find it, use more of the others). The combination transforms these perfectly scrambled eggs into not just an ideal breakfast — you could serve it for lunch or dinner. Get the time: 25 minutes. Serves 2. Soup au pistou is a classic French summer vegetable soup, whose defining characteristic is the pesto-like condiment that is generously swirled into it. The word 'pistou' (like Italian 'pesto') comes from the Latin pistillum, which means to pound. For both pistou and pesto, the basil is traditionally ground using a mortar and pestle. (The difference is that unlike pesto, pistou doesn't contain Parmesan cheese.) Pounding the herbs (this pistou also contains parsley leaves) as they're called for here is still the best way to go as it gives you control over their texture and prevents the herbs from heating up from a whirring blade. But don't let lack of a mortar and pestle stop you. You can make it in a food processor. Do so in small batches and not to over-whir the herbs; you want the condiment to have the time: 1 hour 20 minutes. Serves 6 to 8.
