Has Ireland become too pricey for tourists? An economist and a tourism industry representative debate

travel there are a mix of costs. This can include flights, car rental, souvenirs and guided tours. High on the list is the cost of
restaurants
and
hotels
. It's basic. Tourists need somewhere to stay at night and eat throughout the day. The
prices
set for these items can decide if their trip happens or not.
It's therefore disappointing to continually find that Ireland compares poorly across Europe when measuring these costs.
Eurostat recently compared
countries for the mix of prices on hotels and restaurants in 2024. It found that Ireland was 29.3 per cent higher than the EU average. The only country higher than us was Denmark on 47.6 per cent.
There's a silver lining in being second because it means the Danes can feel rich travelling here. I once met a Dane who said coffee in Dublin was really affordable. You can imagine the raised eyebrows and blank stares from anyone who heard this. With a population of just six million, Denmark won't be enough to keep Ireland a vibrant tourist destination going forward.
The years emerging from the Covid pandemic saw countries around the world rattled by supply chain disruption and an emergence of meaningful price jumps for the first time in decades. Consumer prices in Ireland are up 25 per cent across the board since 2016.

As wages have also risen here and elsewhere, we can assume this first 25 per cent move isn't an issue. It's price growth above these levels that should worry us. That's where restaurants and hotels continue to sound alarm. Prices linked to restaurants and hotels are up 39 per cent on 2016, according to Eurostat.
What's worse is that this masks the underlying mix of the two parts. Inflation data is compiled with the Irish consumer in mind. In a given year, many of us spend sizeable amounts with local cafes, pubs and restaurants. Our spend on hotels is a much smaller fraction.
Inflation among accommodation providers is up a seismic 77 per cent. It's manageable for locals and sometimes unnoticed because domestic travel is less frequent than our visits to restaurants. Now put yourself into the shoes of international travellers. Their mix of spending is heaviest on accommodation. It's the main plank of their trip.

The hospitality sector has admittedly faced rising input costs. All sectors have. We can give further allowance to policy changes such as higher minimum wage levels. This has notched up wages across hospitality at a pace higher than in other sectors. You can understand how restaurants, cafes and pubs have had to pass on higher costs. It's just hard to feel sympathy for hotels.
But how is this possible? Surely a competitive market will attract new hotels, B&Bs and other sources of supply? The opposite has taken place. The surge in migration sent the Government scrambling for beds. Hotels were offered safe contracts which guaranteed income, instead of the precarious fluctuations they normally face from tourism.

numbers falling, the latest data shows 7 per cent of hotel rooms are still used for this purpose. Releasing these rooms would mean a welcome easing to price pressures.
It's all the more essential given the clouds that now hang over the tourism sector. The latest CSO data on international arrivals showed a 10 per cent decline in May, compared with the same month last year. Travellers from continental Europe are down 21 per cent.
You might have expected travellers from America to be down, given the moves in the dollar this year. Numbers are actually up 11 per cent. But this is only cause for more alarm. As the tariff story unfolds, we may also see a turn. Americans are on course for a big inflation development of their own.
Something's gotta give somewhere, because international tourists will only keep giving so much.

Now that we are in the peak summer tourism season, a question often asked is if Ireland is still a value-for-money destination? In my opinion, the answer is yes – and crucially it is not my opinion that counts. Fáilte Ireland, the State agency for tourism, carries out annual surveys with tourists as they are holidaying here. One of the key responses that is closely monitored by industry leaders is the value-for-money question. The latest available research shows Irish tourism is doing pretty well: 63 per cent of all holidaymakers report Ireland as being 'very good' or 'good' value, with a further 32 per cent rating us as 'fair' value and only 5 per cent rating us as 'poor' value. US visitors, buoyed by a relatively strong dollar were most positive; cash-strapped British and price-conscious Europeans a little less enthusiastic.
The truth is that Liveline anecdotes about how expensive Ireland is as a holiday destination are often more of a domestic concern, whereas the international visitor tends to be a little more insouciant. The three primary reasons visitors come to Ireland after all are low-cost to no-cost: the friendliness of the people, the stunning scenery, and our culture and heritage.
That's not to say Ireland isn't a northern European destination in terms of costs and prices. Last month, as noted above, Eurostat ranked Ireland as the second most expensive country in the EU, with prices 38 per cent higher than the average. That is bound to find its way into the pub, restaurant and hotel bills that consumers pay. There is a huge onus on tourism and hospitality businesses to continue delivering a compelling experience for visitors. If the quality of the Irish tourism product drops then we certainly will have a problem.

How Irish tourism is faring this summer depends on who you talk to. National Central Statistics Office numbers indicate a double-digit tourism decline for the first half of the year, whereas industry data is less alarmist, pointing to a flat year.
Consistent feedback, though, from all quarters is that escalating costs of business continue to squeeze already tight profit margins. Many of these business costs are of course State-induced and tourism chiefs are rightly pressuring Government to row back on some of these impositions. That is why industry leaders are pushing for Government to deliver on its commitment to restore the 9 per cent VAT rate for hospitality on budget day.
My economics lectures may have been some time ago but even I remember that adding supply to meet demand helps moderate prices. So as well as curbing costs of business, the Government should be working to attract additional capacity into the market. Instead it seems to be doing the opposite. Tourism chiefs are mystified with the proposed draconian clampdown on short-term rental tourism properties. There is widespread agreement urban centres need more long-term rentals but the blunt way the legislation is currently designed means there is a real risk that rural and coastal Ireland will be denuded of holiday homes and self-catering properties, a staple of Irish tourism for decades. Taking so much stock out of the market is going to do nothing to support our value proposition. And why hasn't the passenger cap at Dublin Airport been lifted by this stage? It has been debated ad nauseam. More air access into the island's main gateway would lead to greater competition and better value for visitors coming to our shores.

Tourism and hospitality is the country's largest indigenous industry and biggest regional employer. There are more than a quarter of a million people employed in the sector across 20,000 businesses. Put simply, tourism matters. Minister for Tourism Peter Burke is set to unveil a new national tourism policy this autumn. Hopefully it will match the ambitions of the industry. But sustainable growth can only be enabled by pro-tourism and pro-enterprise policies. Competitiveness is all-important. Let's curb additional business costs and facilitate extra supply into the market. That will be a win for the visitor, for industry, for the exchequer and for the communities across swathes of regional Ireland where tourism is the only show in town.

Glen Dimplex slumps to €7.7m pre-tax loss as demand for heat pumps slows

Glen Dimplex 's main Irish unit slumped to a pretax loss last year as the heating and electrical goods manufacturer announced an overhaul of its operations amid a slowdown in demand for heating pumps in Europe. New accounts filed by Glen Dimplex Europe Holdings reveal a more than 9 per cent slide in turnover to €875.2 million in the 12 months to the end of September last. In a report attached to the accounts, the directors said the drop in revenues related to a 'decrease in the sale of heat pumps'. Market demand for heating pumps fell by 35 per cent in Europe, the directors said, and by more than 40 per cent in 'major markets' including France and Germany. 'It is expected that the slowdown in state support for heat pump installation is temporary and that it will regain its momentum.' Glen Dimplex Europe Holdings swung to a €15.5 million operating loss over the period, compared to a €23.8 million profit in the previous financial year. The Naughton family-owned company reported a pretax loss of €7.7 million, down from a €120.9 million profit in 2023. The company accounts note that the 2023 profits figure was inflated by a €170.7 million gain on the sale of intellectual property. Glen Dimplex incurred restructuring costs of more than €26 million in the year, according to the filings, more than twice the €12.4 million cost a year earlier. The costs relate to the company's 'transformation programme', the directors said, including the 'simplification' of its flame and consumer appliances businesses. Despite the challenging year, the company more than trebled its divided payment to €13.2 million compared to €3.8 million in each of the previous two years. In February 2024, the group announced an overhaul of its Irish operations, including moving production of its gas and electrical fire products from Dunleer, Co Louth, to a partner business in China, ending manufacturing by the company in the town. Glen Dimplex has entered a consultation process with workers at the site, where it is seeking around 70 redundancies. The group had previously said it planned to relocate a distribution centre from north Dublin to Dunleer and locate a research and development unit in the town, where it currently has two sites, but that one of those sites would close. In all, some 300 jobs were expected to be lost as the company sought to reduce its production footprint in Ireland. Glen Dimplex Europe Holdings employed 4,509 people on average in the year to September last, down from 4,595 in the previous financial period. The company made donations of €200,000 to the Naughton Foundation charity over the period, down from €3 million in 2023. Late last year, Glen Dimplex founder Martin Naughton was named 'chairman emeritus' of the group's supervisory board, with his son, Fergal Naughton, moving into the executive chairman role. Fergal Naughton was subsequently named chief executive, succeeding Fergal Leamy after 18 years at the helm of the group.

How upcoming price changes will affect your EV running costs

The ESB 's e-Cars electric car charging service has recently raised its prices, across each cost band, by 7c per kWh. That's a roughly 15 per cent rise, and it means that in some cases you could be paying €40 or more to charge an average family EV on a public charger. Such costs are a serious barrier to EV uptake, as a huge part of the sales pitch for the switch to electric cars, quite apart from the climate change imperative, has been how much cheaper they are to 'fuel' than a diesel or petrol-powered car. That price advantage, which has also been something of a reward for the less convenient nature of an EV (at least with the current charging network), is starting to be eroded now. True, charging at home still allows you to make some fairly dramatic savings compared to the cost of running a combustion-engined car. READ MORE As one EV expert recently told us: 'You might double your electricity bill, but you'll still be quids-in compared to the price of petrol or diesel.' There's a looming issue on the horizon, however. The cost of domestic electricity is being kept somewhat under control by the fact that, in the energy cost crisis which followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Irish Government cut the VAT on electricity from 13.5 per cent to 9 per cent. That cut has been renewed over and over, but it's due to run out on October 31st this year, which means people might be waking up to not only a Halloween hangover, but higher electricity – and therefore EV charging – costs. How much extra is this going to cost you? Well, let's take as a baseline Electric Ireland 's headline per-kilowatt costs for domestic electricity. Those are, currently, 30.53c per kWh on the day rate (8am to 11pm), 15.05c for night rate (11pm to 8am), and there's a 'night boost' rate of 8.84c per kWh between 2am and 4am. There's the Volkswagen ID.4, which uses a 77kWh battery; a Hyundai Inster, which uses a 49kWh battery, and a Kia EV3, which in its basic form comes with a 58kWh battery. So, at current rates, a 0-100 per cent charge in the VW will cost you €23 on the day rate, and €10.6 assuming you're making the most of that 'night boost' two hours worth of charging. The smaller Inster's costs are €14.95 on the day rate, and just €6.44 overnight. The Kia EVs's charging costs are €17.70 on day rate, and €7.63 on mixed night rate. So, what happens to those figures when/if the VAT rate goes up? Prices per kWh would rise to 31.79c for the day rate, 15.67c for the night rate, and 9.20c for the night boost. It means a full day-rate charge of the ID.4 rises to €24.47, and €11.10 on mixed night rate. The Hyundai's figures become €15.57 day and €6.71 night, while the Kia's rise to €18.43 day and €8.12 night. Are these rises enough to nullify EV running costs versus petrol or diesel? Not even slightly. On a full charge, the VW ID.4 can generally offer around 450km of real-world range. The Hyundai should manage about 320km on a full charge, and the Kia about 360km. The most efficient diesel- or hybrid-engined cars will return about five litres per 100km fuel consumption, which means you'd need to spend €39 on petrol, or €38 on diesel, to equal the VW's range; €28.32 in petrol or €27.04 in diesel to match the Hyundai; and €31.86 in petrol or €30.42 in diesel to match the Kia. Clearly from those figures, you're making a significant saving when charging on the day rate, and cutting your fuel costs by between a half and a third on night rates. When it comes to public charging, however, the cost calculation of running an EV is entirely turned on its head. A return to 13.5 per cent VAT for public charging will mean that the standard ESB e-Cars rate for 'slow' kerbside chargers, of between 7.4 and 22kW AC power, will rise from the current 59c to 61.4c per kWh, while using a 'fast' charger of between 50kW and 150kW on DC power will climb to 66.6c per kWh, and 'very fast' 150kW+ DC chargers will rise to 68.72c per kWh. This will be particularly bad news for anyone without access to a driveway or other off-street parking that allows them to charge overnight at home, such as those people who live in terraced housing, and who rely on public charging. It means a full charge of the VW ID.4 on a kerbside 'slow' charger will, in October, rise to €47.27, considerably more than you'd have to pay if you were running on petrol or diesel. For the Hyundai, that cost would be €30, and for the Kia it will rise to €36.22; again, both are in theory more expensive than an equivalent combustion-engined car for the same notional mileage. For fast charging, the news is also bad. Most users will use fast chargers to top up their batteries as a 'get you home' measure, so the amount of energy, in kWh, taken on each time will vary considerably between one driver and another. However, we can use the baseline 10-80 per cent charge to give us an idea of the potential costs. In the VW, a 10-80 per cent charge, assuming you're using a 150kW charger, and assuming that the VAT change goes through, will cost you €35.89, for an estimated 315km of range (assuming that 450km real-world range figure). For the same distance, assuming once again average fuel economy of five litres per 100km in the most efficient diesel or hybrid cars, that would cost you €27.87 in petrol or €26.60 in diesel. For the Hyundai, the charging cost on a 150kW charger will be €22.80, gaining you about 224km of range, which would in theory cost you €19.80 in petrol, or €18.90 in diesel. For the Kia, the figures are €27 of charging for about 250km of range, which would cost you roughly €22.10 in petrol, or €21.12 in diesel. You can reduce the cost of charging at an ESB public charger by signing up for a €4.79 monthly subscription. This would bring down the cost, assuming a return to the 13.5 per cent VAT rate, to 56.1c for slow chargers, 61.44c for fast chargers and 63.5c for very fast chargers. That means a 0-100 per cent slow charge would cost €43.19 for the VW; €27.48 for the Hyundai; and €32.53 for the Kia. Fast charging, assuming you use a 150kW charger and charge from 10-80 per cent, would cost €32.50 for the VW; €21.07 for the Hyundai; and €25.12 for the Kia. In terms of other providers, a return to the 13.5 per cent VAT rate would push the price of charging at Ionity, on its very fast 350kW chargers, from 73c per kWh to 76c per kWh (or from 53c to 55.18c per kWh if you have a monthly Ionity subscription). That would mean a cost of €40.96 for a 10-80 per cent charge in the VW (€29.70 with subscription); €26 for the Hyundai (€18.92 on subscription); and €30.08 for the Kia (€22.40 on subscription). Opens in new window ] It is, of course, worth remembering that those are notional figures, and your actual experience of electric range versus petrol or diesel fuel economy may vary considerably, but it should give you some idea of just how expensive public charging of an electric car has become, and what an important factor it is to have home charging. It also underlines the cold corner, in EV terms, into which those with no access to off-street parking at home have been pushed. The Irish Times has been told by Cork City Council , for instance, that when it comes to figuring out what to do for people who can't charge at home: 'The strategy does not make provision to allow private electric vehicle charging cables either in pavement or overhead to be installed across public footpaths or roads to facilitate home charging.' In other words, those people will just have to rely on a public charging network, which is becoming so expensive that it makes no financial sense to switch to an EV. Whether or not VAT on electricity returns to 13.5 per cent in October, that's a serious bar to EV adoption, which will have to be tackled.

Lewy said that it had been their dream for 10 years to live in Aus, and added that his and his partner's life has greatly improved since ditching the British Isles. "It's highly likely that we will never live in the UK again because it cannot offer us the life we've got now", he said in a video posted to his TiKTok channel @lewyp23. Lewy revealed that he is no longer "overworked" and "stressed" and is paid more for his job in Australia than he was in the UK. He added that the cost of living in Adelaide is much cheaper than it was for him back home, and that the people seem so much happier and fulfilled. The TikToker claims that he would have to earn a whopping £150,000 a year to have the same quality of life in the UK as he does in Adelaide on his "average" wage, and added that he wouldn't even move back to the UK if someone gave him £50,000. Lewy now lives just three minutes walks from the beach, and as soon as they finish work, he and his partner take their dog out for sunny seaside walks. He has even spotted pods of dolphins during his beach walks, which he said always leave him in "disbelief". Even in winter, the weather in Adelaide is warm and sunny, meaning that Lewy and his partner can have year round fun, without spending a penny. "You don't realise how much the weather affects you until you move to a nice place", he said. "It's safer her in Australia, you see a lot less nastiness." He added that he and his partner now do lots more on the weekends, and are able to be so much more social, as they are no longer stressed. How easy is it to move abroad? Brexit means British citizens now have to apply for visas to move to countries within the EU. While some countries residency restrictions are easier than others, here's what you need to do at home before moving: Notify HMRC about your upcoming move. Let your local authority know and provide a forwarding address. Contact your mortgage and utility providers and bank before leaving. If you have paid enough UK national insurance contributions, you can qualify for a state pension abroad - contact the International Pension Centre. You can sign up to the Royal Mail's redirection service. If you have outstanding student loans, contact the Student Loans Centre. If you have children, give due notice to childcares and schools. He described the supermarkets, which are packed full of fresh fruit and veg as being "incredible" and said that older people look much more youthful and full of life. Lewy is urging others to follow in his footsteps and ditch the "miserable" UK. He said that anyone under 35 can easily get a working holiday visa, and added that the country is especially looking for tradesmen. He said: "Why are you waiting to get out of that horrible place when you've got this waiting for you? "The people are really lovely and you've got a life waiting for you with way less stress."
