US President Donald Trump fired the federal government official who is in charge of Labour statistics. What was concerning was the fact that the news of the official's sacking came just hours after US job data revealed that the employment growth stalled this summer, prompting accusations that he is 'firing the messenger'.
Soon after the White House made the firing official, the president claimed that Erika McEntarfer, commissioner of labour statistics, had 'faked' employment figures in the run-up to last year's election. Trump accused McEntarfer of forging numbers in a bid to boost former US Vice President Kamala Harris's chance of victory in the 2024 US Presidential Elections.

Dimayed by the latest figures, Trump went on to claim: 'Today's Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad'. However, he gave no evidence to support his allegations and insisted that the US economy was, in fact, 'BOOMING' on his watch.
US Job report paints a grim picture
On Friday, the US employment report raised questions about the state of the labour market since Trump's return to the office. 'We need accurate job numbers,' he wrote on Truth Social. 'I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified.'
Shortly after the report was released, the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) confirmed in a brief statement that McEntarfer had been dismissed and William Wiatrowski, the agency's deputy commissioner, would serve as acting commissioner. It is pertinent to note that Trump's abrupt announcement came as administration officials scrambled to explain a lacklustre employment report.
Not only did job growth in the country fail to meet expectations in July, but the previous estimates in May and June were also revised significantly lower. The president went on to accuse the bureau of trying to hide accurate statistics. However, his move garnered criticism among experts.
'Trump is firing the messenger because he doesn't seem to like job numbers that reflect how badly he's damaged the economy,' said Lily Roberts, managing director for inclusive growth at the Centre for American Progress, a think tank.
'Politicising our country's collection of data on what's going on in the economy … will make it harder to create an economy that makes sure everyone has a good job,' added Roberts. 'Borrowing from the authoritarian playbook fuels more uncertainty that will cost Americans for years to come.'

Meanwhile, Paul Schroeder, executive director of the Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics, described the president's allegation as 'very damaging and outrageous'. 'Not only does it undermine the integrity of federal economic statistics, but it also politicises data which needs to remain independent and trustworthy. This action is a grave error by the administration and one that will have ramifications for years to come," he added.
The veteran who was dismissed
It is pertinent to note that McEntarfer is a widely respected economist and veteran employee of the federal government. In the past, she had worked at the US Census Bureau under George W Bush and at the US Census Bureau under Barack Obama, Trump and Joe Biden. In January 2024, McEntarfer was confirmed to the post by the US Senate.
In a letter also signed by organisations including the American Statistics Association and a string of senior economists, they said there were 'many reasons' to confirm McEntarfer as commissioner of labour statistics, citing her 'wealth of research and statistical experience'. She was ultimately confirmed by a vote in the Senate, with 86 votes cast in favour and eight against.
Trump's decision to fire McEntarfer was 'outrageous but not surprising', said Julie Su, former acting US labour secretary under Biden. 'He hates facts, so he blames truth-tellers.' 'The US needs and deserves trustworthy economic data', added Su. 'This is a pathetic attempt by the president to gaslight everyone about the consequences of his disastrous economic policies.'

Exporters seek assistance, credit at affordable rates to deal with Trump tariff

New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) Indian exporters from various sectors, including food, marine, and textiles, have sought financial assistance and affordable credit from the government to cope with the 25 per cent Trump tariff, industry officials said. In a meeting with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Mumbai, certain exporters sought plans on the lines of the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, they added. "Exporters share issues, which they may face in the American market because of the high duty announced by US President Donald Trump," one of the officials said, adding that the minister has suggested that the exporting community send their suggestions in writing. They also demanded loans at affordable rates and fiscal incentives. In India, according to exporters, interest rates range between 8 and 12 per cent or even more, depending on the spread and risk assessment of the borrower by authorised dealer banks. In competing countries, the interest rate is very low. For instance, the central bank rate is 3.1 per cent in China, 3 per cent in Malaysia, 2 per cent in Thailand, and 4.5 per cent in Vietnam. The situation for sectors like apparel and shrimp is not good. US buyers have started cancelling orders or are holding back orders. In the coming months, it can impact India's exports to the US, and because of a dip in shipments, there could be job losses," they said, adding that it will be difficult for the government to extend fiscal incentives. The 25 per cent duty, announced this week, will come into force from August 7 (9.30 am IST). These will be over and above the existing standard import duty in the US. The sectors, which would bear the brunt of this high tax, include textiles/ clothing (10.3 billion), gems and jewellery (12 billion), shrimp (USD 2.24 billion), leather and footwear (USD 1.18 billion), chemicals (2.34 billion), and electrical and mechanical machinery (about USD 9 billion). The US accounts for over 30 per cent of India's leather and apparel exports. According to think tank GTRI, quick estimates suggest that India's goods exports in FY 2026 may come down by 30 per cent from USD 86.5 billion in the last fiscal to USD 60.6 billion in 2025-26. Sudhir Sekhri, Chairman, AEPC (Apparel Export Promotion Council), last week requested immediate government intervention to offset this huge setback. "Exporters have their back against the wall and will have to sell below cost to keep their factories running and avoid mass layoffs," he has said. Plastic exporter from Delhi NCR region Arvind Goenka said that exports to the US will face stiff competition from competing countries as tariffs on India are one of the highest. "The USA has fixed substantially lower tariffs on countries like Vietnam (20 per cent), Thailand (19 per cent) and South Korea (15 per cent), all of which excel in plastic goods production, and they may encroach into India's share, which currently is USD 2.2 billion annually," Goenka said. India's leading footwear exporter and Farida Group Chairman Rafeeq Ahmed said the government should come forward to help the industry before a trade pact is finalised between India and the US.

Trump slams Democrats for "delay" tactics, backs Republican "warriors" in Senate confirmation fight

ANI Trump slams Democrats for "delay" tactics, backs Republican "warriors" in Senate confirmation fight US President Donald Trump lashed out at Senate Democrats for allegedly stalling the confirmation of his nominees and applauded Senate Republicans for their continued efforts to push forward appointments, The Hill reported. "Very proud of our great Republican Senators for fighting, over the Weekend and far beyond, if necessary, in order to get my great Appointments approved, and on their way to helping us MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN," Trump posted on Saturday on Truth Social. According to The Hill, Trump accused Democrats of attempting to obstruct the process. "They are doing everything possible to DELAY these wonderful and talented people from being" confirmed, the president further took a swipe at Senate Democrats by invoking historical figures, stating, "If George Washington or Abraham Lincoln were up for approval, the Dems would delay, as long as possible, then vote them out. The Democrats want our Country to fail, because they have failed." He also thanked Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and "our Republican Warriors in the Senate," urging them to "Fight and WIN. I am with you all the way!!!" Speaking to reporters, Thune said that recess appointments to address the backlog of over 160 nominees -- primarily for lower-level roles -- were "on the table.""I think everything is on the table," Thune said, adding, "Fixing the rules, not just for now, but for the long term, would be a better solution for it. But at this point right now, I wouldn't say we're taking any options off the table," The Hill quoted him as lawmakers have shown willingness to negotiate with Democrats to facilitate confirmations but are also preparing to consider alternative paths if a deal falls through."If we can't then we will have to resort to other options and we've got a lot of support for doing that," Thune told Politico, noting that virtually unanimous Republican backing would be needed to change Senate rules. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) defended the Democrats' stance, stating, "Historically bad nominees deserve historic levels of scrutiny." "We have never seen nominees as flawed, as compromised, as unqualified as Trump's," Schumer posted on X. "And they know that," The Hill Hill also cited sources confirming that Schumer's and Thune's offices were in talks during the week, with the New York senator sending a counterproposal on in another Saturday post, claimed that Schumer was demanding over $1 billion in funding to be unfrozen in return for confirming "a small" number of Trump's "highly qualified" nominees. "This demand is egregious and unprecedented, and would be embarrassing to the Republican Party if it were accepted. It is political extortion, by any other name," Trump wrote, The Hill reported. In his closing salvo, Trump urged Republicans to reject any such deal: "Tell Schumer, who is under tremendous political pressure from within his own party, the Radical Left Lunatics, to GO TO HELL! Do not accept the offer, go home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are, and what a great job the Republicans are doing, and have done, for our Country," Trump said, signing off with "have a great RECESS and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"
