Luka Doncic's 'taste for beer and hookah' factored into Mavericks wanting to trade him to Lakers: report

Fox News26-02-2025

Luka Doncic got some revenge against his old Dallas Mavericks squad, the team that shockingly traded him before the NBA deadline, by notching a triple-double in the Los Angeles Lakers' 107-99 win on Tuesday night.
While Doncic was dissecting his former teammates on the court, Lakers fans were heard chanting, "Thank you, Nico!" to Mavericks GM Nico Harrison, who orchestrated the blockbuster trade.
Still, the Mavericks are sticking by the trade of the perennial All-Star guard, and The Athletic's recent report only escalated the health concerns that played a major factor in moving him now.
The report stated that "the people who witnessed Doncic's last days in Dallas do not paint a flattering portrait of the 25-year-old's professionalism." Doncic's conditioning level was reportedly a frustration for the organization, and they didn't like his "taste for beer and hookah."
The Mavericks reportedly predicted Doncic's "basketball demise" due to his health, and Harrison made a move nobody saw coming. Lakers star center Anthony Davis was the highlight of Los Angeles' trade package to land Doncic.
This report perhaps brought more clarity to a viral clip that went down after the Mavericks won the Western Conference Finals this past season, where Doncic's beer was taken out of his hand by Mavericks VP Michael Finley seemingly without an explanation.
In the clip, Doncic seems perplexed that happened, and ultimately shrugs it off.
Doncic's father, Sasa, was standing next to his son when that interaction went down, and he blasted the Mavericks following the trade and the initial reports that Luka's health played a factor in it.
Sasa called the situation "very unfair" while making an appearance with Arena Sport Slovenija.
"It wasn't even a problem last year since, I am saying again, one individual said he's not fit enough," Sasa explained about the conditioning concerns. "That he played, I don't know, 100 games, practically 40 minutes with two or three players constantly on him. That he was beaten, and you say such things about him. I feel that this is very unfair from certain individuals. You traded him.Stand by your actions, but don't look for excuses or alibis. That's it."
Doncic has been nursing a calf strain for most of the 2024-25 season with the Mavericks, but since getting back on the floor for the Lakers, the team is 4-2.
Doncic is averaging 19.0 points, nine rebounds and seven assists through five games, though he's shooting below his usual efficient rate at 38.1% thus far.
At 35-21, the Lakers are fourth in the Western Conference standings.

Two Key Red Sox Hitters Will Face Massive Pressure Upon Returning

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox are in desperate need of professional hitters in a new-look lineup. Boston traded away franchise star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a shocking move earlier this month that ruled headlines around baseball. Among the several consequences of the deal marked a significantly weaker lineup for the Red Sox. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 21: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox warms up before a game against the New York Mets at Fenway Park on May 21, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 21: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox warms up before a game against the New York Mets at Fenway Park on May 21, 2025 in Boston, easily slugged as the most talented bat in a youthful lineup that needed proven productions. Between the trade and other injuries, the Red Sox are now without the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 hitters from their Opening Day lineup. Alex Bregman and Triston Casas remain out with injuries, though the former will return this season for Boston, right after the All-Star break. Bregman put together an outstanding start to the season in his best offensive run since the 2019 season. The Devers trade also opened up the designated hitter spot for the Red Sox. That finally opens a spot for Masataka Yoshida, who still has not played this season from setbacks following offseason shoulder injuries. Those are two really good hitters that can only help Boston. The offense struggled heavily on the West Coast trip after the trade and relies heavily on young players who are still trying to figure it out at the MLB level. The lineup looks a lot better with Bregman and Yoshida in a growing-desperate stretch to hop back into the playoff race. Here's a potential lineup for when the Red Sox get healthy: 1. Jarren Duran, LF 2. Abraham Toro, 1B 3. Alex Bregman, 3B 4. Carlos Narvaez, C 5. Masataka Yoshida, DH 6. Trevor Story, SS 7. Wilyer Abreu/Roman Anthony RF 8. Marcelo Mayer, 2B 9. Ceddanne Rafaela, CF The Red Sox, who have posted a top-10 OPS in baseball for seven consecutive seasons, need a major step forward from the offense collectively in July. Bregman and Yoshida can make a difference, but are those returns going to be enough to rescue Boston?

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd reveals plans for Cooper Flagg's NBA rookie season

To hardly anyone's surprise, the Dallas Mavericks selected Cooper Flagg with the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Flagg, 18, became one of the youngest basketball stars taken at No. 1. LeBron James retains the distinction of being the youngest player in league history to be taken with the top overall pick. Flagg described the moment he heard his name called by the NBA commissioner as "a dream come true." While Flagg primarily spent time at the traditional forward position during his lone season at Duke, the team's roster also listed him as a guard. Former Mavericks player and current coach Jason Kidd admitted he takes a more nuanced approach to players' positions. "I don't look at the position," Kidd said during a press conference. Flagg is expected to make his debut at the NBA Summer League on July 10 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Kidd revealed he wants to see Flagg in action at the point guard position. "I want to put him at point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts. Be able to run the show. Be able to play (shooting guard). Play (small forward). He's comfortable playing that. We want to push. I think he's going to respond in a positive way." Mavericks part-owner Mark Cuban backed the idea of testing Flagg at the point guard spot. Kidd said he received a text from the billionaire reading, "point guard, point guard, point guard, let him bring the ball up." The 6-foot-9 basketball phenom was charged with bringing the ball up the court and getting the offense set up at times at Duke. He ultimately led the Blue Devils in assists. Kidd brushed off concerns about Flagg potentially making mistakes while handling the ball as he played the guard position. "It's all right to fail, it's all right to turn the ball over. We've talked about that. Just understanding the guys that I've been around that have been young from Giannis (Antetokounmpo), giving him the ball, and he failed, but he wanted to come back and have the ball." Kidd expressed excitement about Flagg having the ball at summer league in Las Vegas. "I'm excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens. Let's get it started right off the bat," the Mavs head coach said. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Red Sox's Cora says Yoshida set to start rehab assignment at Triple-A

BOSTON (AP) — The struggling Boston Red Sox could be getting some offensive help soon. Manager Alex Cora said Masataka Yoshida would start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. The 31-year-old DH/outfielder has been out the entire season following surgery on his right shoulder in October. 'He'll go on a rehab assignment. We'll see how many at-bats he needs,' Cora said Saturday before the Red Sox faced the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. 'He's moving well, the swing feels great, the throwing has been a lot better. He's been able to bounce back, so we just have to map it out and see how we're going to do it.' Cora said he'd also play some games in the outfield. Last season, he was primarily the DH, getting into left field only once in 108 games. In his first season in 2023 after signing a $90-million, five-year free agent deal with the team, he played 85 games in left. On Saturday, Yoshida was shagging fly balls during batting practice in right field, ran the bases while others were hitting and took BP. Also, third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been sidelined since late May with a strained right quad, ran lightly in the infield, and took grounders at third, throwing across the diamond before the Red Sox took BP. 'He's just finishing taking ground balls,' Cora said. 'It was a good day for him and Masa.' When he was injured, Bregman was one of the club's most productive hitters, batting .299 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs in 51 games. Cora recently said the 31-year-old Bregman isn't expected to return until after the All-Star break. Boston entered Saturday on a season-high six game losing streak, its longest since September 2022. The Red Sox dropped the opener of a three-game series against Toronto, 9-0, on Friday night. ___
