Lucky shopper unlocks EV grand prize with right key
WITH her fortune in somebody else's hands, Kedah resident Ng Yik Chin could only look on and hope.
It was the prize presentation ceremony of Aman Central's 9th Amazing Year lucky draw and a brand new MG4 electric vehicle was on the line.
After a dice roll, fellow finalist Syafiqah Musa, had first dibs on two identical key fobs – only one would unlock the metallic red hatchback worth RM112,000.
With scores of shoppers watching on at the mall in Alor Setar, the human resources and admin assistant made her selection.
She pressed her chosen key fob but nothing happened.
Pawn shop manager Ng was immediately overcome with joy.
She pressed the remaining key fob and the car's lights activated, confirming her as its new owner.
'I cannot believe it. I thought my chance had gone. I've been joining the contest for many years hoping to get lucky, and finally did.
'This year I submitted three or four entries. I shop here quite often, mostly for children's clothes,' said Ng during the ceremony.
She received her grand prize from Kedah human resources, Chinese, Indian and Siamese affairs and non-governmental organisations committee chairman Wong Chia Zhen, the guest of honour.
Also present were Belleview Group director Grace Ho and Aman Central assistant general manager of marketing communications Ken Chin.
After brushing confetti off her hair, Ng wasted no time in checking out her first-ever electric vehicle.
The mother-of-two is currently expecting her third child.
'It's more spacious than my current car and will be more convenient to take the family around. It's been a blessed year,' she added.
Syafiqah, a tad crestfallen, had to console herself with the second prize of a Goodnite Signature - Love Series IV mattress worth RM5,999.
Other winners walked away with various prizes with a combined value exceeding RM21,000.
The campaign ran from October 2024 till February this year. From the hundreds of entries, 80 were shortlisted.
Each finalist was allocated numbered ping pong balls.
Matching balls were also placed in a 'gashapon' or capsule toy machine and then drawn for the prizes in ascending order.
Prizes were also awarded for a separate Top Spenders' campaign.
Yeoh Kok Hooi, Nur Khairin Kamil and Lim Fooi Chooi received Swarovski crystal home decor pieces totalling RM4,378 in value.
Chin said the occasion was not just an incredible milestone but also a heartfelt thank you to shoppers, tenants and business partners.
'Aman Central continues to be a cornerstone of Kedah's retail landscape and we remain committed to bringing innovative experiences and rewarding events to the community.
'Since opening our doors, the vibrant retail mix and strategic location have made us a key lifestyle hub attracting millions of visitors annually.
'This also contributed to the state's growing tourism appeal,' he highlighted in his speech.
Wong commended the mall for giving back to the community through rewarding campaigns like this.
Also present were Belleview Group leasing assistant general manager Brian Ho, Aman Central operations manager Gan Poh Hin and Auto Gallery Cartrade Sdn Bhd advisor Hayazi Abdul Halim.

Toyota to begin local assembly of bZ4X Electric SUV in Indonesia
TOYOTA MOTOR has officially announced its plans to begin electric vehicle (EV) production in Indonesia within 2025, marking a major strategic shift in the company's regional manufacturing operations. This move aligns with Indonesia's government-led push to accelerate EV adoption through generous tax incentives for locally assembled electric cars. As part of this expansion, Toyota will start assembling its bZ4X all-electric SUV in Indonesia. This decision places the Southeast Asian nation alongside Japan and China as one of only three global manufacturing locations for the bZ4X. The company also confirmed it will begin production of electric pickup trucks in Thailand later this year, reinforcing its commitment to electrifying its commercial and passenger vehicle offerings in the region. Toyota's long-standing presence in Indonesia, where it commands over 30% of the automotive market, has previously been centred around hybrid vehicle manufacturing. However, this latest development marks Toyota's first foray into full EV assembly in the country, positioning it in direct competition with a wave of Chinese manufacturers that have recently entered the Indonesian EV sector. Hiroyuki Ueda, President Director of Toyota-Astra Motor–the joint venture between Toyota and Astra International–emphasised that the move supports Toyota's broader 'multi-pathway' strategy toward carbon neutrality. He stated that Toyota has already introduced a variety of environmentally friendly vehicles and is now expanding that portfolio with full-electric models aimed at giving consumers more sustainable options. Indonesia has become increasingly attractive for global automakers looking to capitalise on EV incentives. Under the country's current regulations, vehicles with at least 40% local content benefit from a significantly reduced value-added tax (VAT) of just 1%, compared to the standard 11%. These vehicles are also exempt from the luxury goods tax. Additionally, automakers that commit to producing EVs in Indonesia can access further incentives, including exemptions from import duties and other tax relief measures introduced by the government in 2023.

Three-day JPJ blitz nets 53 luxury cars
Opulent rides: Muhammad Kifli (right) showing some of the seized luxury vehicles. KUALA LUMPUR: A Rolls-Royce worth RM3mil is among the 53 posh vehicles seized during a three-day blitz on owners who failed to abide by road transport regulations. 'Other cars seized included a Lamborghini, a BMW i8 and an Aston Martin,' said Road Transport Department (JPJ) senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan. This came after a crackdown, codenamed 'Ops Luxury 2.0', was held around the Klang Valley to detect owners of luxury cars with offences such as expired road tax, no valid insurance, expired or non-existent driving licences and the display of unregistered number plates. 'Some of these vehicles were without road tax since 2022,' said Muhammad Kifli. He said that initial investigations revealed that three of the seized high-end vehicles were being driven by foreigners without valid road tax or insurance coverage, Muhammad Kifli said. 'One of the foreign drivers was also found to be using a fake international driving permit, allegedly purchased in Dubai for RM5,000.' He said that these cars were rented, while some were owned by companies where the individuals were employed. The Rolls-Royce is believed to be owned by a businessman. Speaking to reporters yesterday, Muhammad Kifli said 'Ops Luxury 2.0' was conducted by Kuala Lumpur JPJ based on intelligence gathering and public tip-offs. 'The operation was carried out under the Road Transport Act and related regulations,' he said. Muhammad Kifli said that JPJ did not practise selective enforcement and would continue taking firm action regardless of vehicle type or the status of their owners. 'Our enforcement doesn't focus solely on motorcycles. Luxury vehicles are not exempted. 'We are carrying out this operation nationwide,' he said. Muhammad Kifli added that there are currently more than 1,000 luxury vehicles nationwide flagged by JPJ for not having valid road tax or insurance. 'Vehicle owners are urged to renew their road tax immediately. 'We will not compromise with anyone who fails to comply with traffic regulations,' he said.
