Showcasing local talents

Graceful evening wear designed by Hasfitri Yusof (left). Kedah Fashion Week (KFW) 2025 is set to showcase 18 couture designers for its 10th edition. This year's lineup will also feature well-known Thai designer Patinya, alongside 11 up-and-coming student designers from Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL). Organised by Aman Central, a mall in Alor Setar, Kedah, the event aims to showcase local talents. Designer Asyraf Ariff (left) is inspired by Malay fashion. Kedah Fashion Week 2025 will take place at Aman Central from Aug 1 to 3. This year, the theme is 'Diamond'. Aman Central marketing communications assistant general manager Ken Chin said the theme was chosen as it represented the pressure that designers go through before coming out with clear, strong and brilliant designs, just like a diamond. Chin said the event also gave the community a reason to gather, celebrate local fashion talents and take pride in the event happening in the state, which was not known for its high fashion. 'When families come to watch, they see local culture and creativity reflected in them. 'When young people attend, they see a path they can take for themselves. 'For local brands and entrepreneurs, KFW sparks new ideas and confidence to grow further,' he said at a press conference to announce the upcoming KFW 2025 at The Exchange TRX in Kuala Lumpur. Chin said sustainability was a key component of KFW 2025. He said some designers would be using upcycled materials, as well as heritage techniques, to show that fashion can honour both creativity and care for the planet. 'Some of our young designers from UniKL are working with fabric remnants to create new pieces, turning waste into value,' he said. Aman Central developer Belleview Group director Grace Ho, who was present at the event, said the vision behind building the mall was to bring a fresh vibrancy to Alor Setar. 'We want Aman Central to grow as a place where people gather, where businesses find opportunities and where culture and creativity can thrive together. 'We want KFW to serve as a platform where Kedah's creative voice can be heard far beyond its borders, while remaining deeply rooted in the stories and traditions that have shaped it. 'We hope young designers will feel that their work matters and their ideas have a home here,' she said.

Lucky shopper unlocks EV grand prize with right key

Ng (third from right) receiving a mock car key from Wong. Also present were (from left) Brian, Hayazi, Grace and Chin. WITH her fortune in somebody else's hands, Kedah resident Ng Yik Chin could only look on and hope. It was the prize presentation ceremony of Aman Central's 9th Amazing Year lucky draw and a brand new MG4 electric vehicle was on the line. After a dice roll, fellow finalist Syafiqah Musa, had first dibs on two identical key fobs – only one would unlock the metallic red hatchback worth RM112,000. With scores of shoppers watching on at the mall in Alor Setar, the human resources and admin assistant made her selection. She pressed her chosen key fob but nothing happened. Pawn shop manager Ng was immediately overcome with joy. She pressed the remaining key fob and the car's lights activated, confirming her as its new owner. 'I cannot believe it. I thought my chance had gone. I've been joining the contest for many years hoping to get lucky, and finally did. 'This year I submitted three or four entries. I shop here quite often, mostly for children's clothes,' said Ng during the ceremony. She received her grand prize from Kedah human resources, Chinese, Indian and Siamese affairs and non-governmental organisations committee chairman Wong Chia Zhen, the guest of honour. Also present were Belleview Group director Grace Ho and Aman Central assistant general manager of marketing communications Ken Chin. After brushing confetti off her hair, Ng wasted no time in checking out her first-ever electric vehicle. The mother-of-two is currently expecting her third child. 'It's more spacious than my current car and will be more convenient to take the family around. It's been a blessed year,' she added. Syafiqah, a tad crestfallen, had to console herself with the second prize of a Goodnite Signature - Love Series IV mattress worth RM5,999. Other winners walked away with various prizes with a combined value exceeding RM21,000. The campaign ran from October 2024 till February this year. From the hundreds of entries, 80 were shortlisted. Each finalist was allocated numbered ping pong balls. Matching balls were also placed in a 'gashapon' or capsule toy machine and then drawn for the prizes in ascending order. Prizes were also awarded for a separate Top Spenders' campaign. Yeoh Kok Hooi, Nur Khairin Kamil and Lim Fooi Chooi received Swarovski crystal home decor pieces totalling RM4,378 in value. Chin said the occasion was not just an incredible milestone but also a heartfelt thank you to shoppers, tenants and business partners. 'Aman Central continues to be a cornerstone of Kedah's retail landscape and we remain committed to bringing innovative experiences and rewarding events to the community. 'Since opening our doors, the vibrant retail mix and strategic location have made us a key lifestyle hub attracting millions of visitors annually. 'This also contributed to the state's growing tourism appeal,' he highlighted in his speech. Wong commended the mall for giving back to the community through rewarding campaigns like this. Also present were Belleview Group leasing assistant general manager Brian Ho, Aman Central operations manager Gan Poh Hin and Auto Gallery Cartrade Sdn Bhd advisor Hayazi Abdul Halim.
