KZN enjoys warmer Friday as cold front spares the province

KwaZulu-Natal residents woke up to a relatively mild Friday morning. Most parts of the province enjoyed warm conditions, especially along the coast and in the north.
While inland areas like Pietermaritzburg and Newcastle experienced a cooler weather start, the day was expected to warm up quickly. Coastal towns, including Durban and Port St Johns, recorded comfortable morning temperatures at around 14°C, with sunshine expected throughout the day.
Joel Guy, a SABC meteorologist, noted that KwaZulu-Natal is mostly unaffected by the cold front impacting the western parts of the country.
'Over the southern areas, the weather is not too cold in the eastern parts and also along the coastal regions,' he said.
'KwaZulu-Natal is looking good today, Durban, Port St Johns, and Richards Bay are all starting around 14 degrees.'
By midday, weather temperatures across the province were forecast to rise into the lower to mid-20s, with Richards Bay and areas in the north expected to be the warmest. Inland towns such as Ladysmith and Vryheid would remain slightly cooler but enjoy a sunny day.
Unlike the Western Cape, where strong winds and damaging waves are expected, KwaZulu-Natal does not have severe weather warnings. Beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts expect clear skies, mild breezes, and good conditions throughout Friday.

City of Cape Town carries out repairs on potholes

Officials from the City of Cape Town have undertaken temporary pothole repairs in Gugulethu, Manenberg and Newlands, as wet conditions persist. 'During winter, and as a result of heavy and ongoing rains, water seeps into cracks on the road surface. These cracks widen, and turn into potholes that damage tyres and cause accidents. 'Permanent pothole repairs require dry, warm conditions, thus during the wet months, we have to do cold mix asphalt repairs. 'In summer, we will return to monitor the performance of the cold mix and do permanent repairs with hot mix asphalts, where needed,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas. Quintas joined the city's Roads Infrastructure Management team this week as they embarked on temporary pothole repairs. Excessive mountain run-off has also led to flooding in some areas. In Gugulethu and Manenberg, the city found that illegal dumping of household items into stormwater drains increased the severity of flooding, as the drains were blocked. 'Another issue is illegal outlets or the dumping of greywater which contains chemicals that damage road surfaces and causes potholes. This greywater contains detergents and comes from baths, clothes, dishes and car washing. 'Our teams are working hard to clear blocked drains and keep roads safe this winter, but we need your help. 'Please dispose of greywater properly through the sewer system so it can be treated and re-used, and keep it off our road surfaces. Together, we can reduce winter flooding and prevent the forming of new potholes,' said Quintas. Residents are encouraged to report incidents of flooding and related issues to the city's call centre at 0860 103 089, via the City App, or alternatively via email on Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.

Motorists warned after Amanzimtoti sinkhole swallows car

Motorists using Wanda Cele Road (Old Main Road) in Amanzimtoti today are urged to exercise caution after the roadway collapsed near Zulwini Gardens, creating a dangerous sinkhole. According to South Coast Sun, a vehicle plunged into the gaping hole earlier today as it was filled with water and the unsuspecting driver drove into it unknowingly. Emergency services and eThekwini Municipality have been notified, and work to secure the hole and make it visible to road users will commence soon. The South African Weather Service has predicted more disruptive rain over the weekend along the coastal areas. Heavy rain and flood alert for parts of KZN

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for parts of KwaZulu-Natal as cold and wet weather approaches the province this weekend. Forecaster Sihle Dlamini confirmed that the heavy rain could lead to localised flooding, especially in informal settlements and low-lying areas. 'The areas that are covered by this warning include eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Ndwedwe, Ray Nkonyeni, Umlazi, as well as Umzumbe,' said Dlamini. SAWS warns of slippery roads, difficult driving conditions, and potential damage to mud-built homes in the affected regions. Saturday will mark the arrival of a cold front moving through the province. According to Dlamini, temperatures are expected to fall rapidly behind the system. 'Usually when a cold front passes, just behind it, that's where you're going to find cold temperatures,' he explained. 'In this case, we're going to be falling behind the cold front. That is why you'll encounter cold conditions.' This sudden dip will be felt across the province, with most areas experiencing a significant chill after the front's passage. Heavy rain and lower temperatures are expected to make outdoor activities uncomfortable, especially along the South Coast. Rain chances remain high throughout the weekend, with varying intensities forecasted across the region. Dlamini noted, 'A 30% chance of showers is expected across most areas of KZN,' while the South Coast faces a 60% likelihood of rain. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roads and reduce speed on slippery surfaces. Emergency services may be on standby to respond to weather-related incidents.
