Thai farmers pitch Buriram-born K-pop star Lisa to power fruit exports beyond China
The member of Blackpink and Buriram native was named by growers as their top pick to front a campaign promoting Thai fruits overseas, The Bangkok Post reported today.
The suggestion was made during Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's visit to Chanthaburi, where farmers pitched Lisa's star power as the key to cracking new markets.
They believe Lisa's international influence could raise Thailand's fruit exports to 500 billion baht a year, up from the current 200–300 billion.
Lisa, who made history as the first Thai K-pop idol to go global, is known for breaking records with her solo music and securing luxury endorsements with brands like Bulgari and Celine.
Growers say her image could make Thai fruits more desirable worldwide, especially beyond China, the country's current top buyer.
The prime minister was also briefed on issues like long customs delays, premature durian harvesting, and a shrinking farm labour force.
Farmers proposed solutions such as relaxing rules for migrant workers and offering compensation for damage caused by wild elephants.
Paetongtarn pledged faster export processing, more government fruit purchases, and research funding to keep Thai produce competitive.
She later joined a durian-cutting event and livestreamed with young farmers — but for many, Lisa's star remains the biggest hope for Thailand's fruit fame.

T Rowe favours Thailand, Malaysia bonds on scope for rate cuts
Joining a broader Asian currency rally against the US dollar, both the baht and ringgit have risen by more than 5% since the start of 2025. (Freepik pic) HONG KONG : T Rowe Price Group Inc likes local bonds in Thailand and Malaysia, betting that further monetary easing will outweigh currency gains as a key driver of investor returns. 'Malaysia's central bank has potential to deliver several more interest rate cuts after its first policy easing in five years earlier this month, while persistent deflation in Thailand should extend support for its debt despite already-low yields,' said Leonard Kwan, a Hong Kong-based portfolio manager at the US asset manager. Kwan, who manages the firm's emerging markets bond strategy fund, added he prefers medium-term Thai bonds and longer-dated notes in Malaysia. The fund had assets worth US$581 million as of June 30. 'Tailwinds from the dollar's weakness against the Asian currencies will be 'less powerful than what we saw year to date,' Kwan said. He expects a 'consolidative period for the dollar over the next three to six months' as bearish wagers on the greenback appear excessive. Kwan's comments signal a rethink among investors as the dollar has rebounded in the past two weeks, clawing back some of this year's steep losses as fresh inflation data cast doubts on the outlook of US rate cuts. Meanwhile, signs of strong consumption and a resilient labour market also helped ease concerns about a tariff-induced recession and a sustained decline of American exceptionalism. Despite the latest gain, the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index is down 8% this year. Joining a broader Asian currency rally against the greenback, both the Thai baht and ringgit have risen over 5% since 2025 began. The currency gains have been a key catalyst of the performance of the two nations' local-currency bonds. Thai debt has generated year-to-date total returns of 13.8% this year, with 10.2% for their Malaysian counterpart, Bloomberg data show. Elsewhere in the region, Kwan said he also likes Indonesian bonds of medium-term maturities, as the firm sees another two-to-three 25-basis-point rate cuts in Southeast Asia's biggest economy. The Indonesian rupiah, in contrast, is Asia's worst-performing currency this year, down 1.3% versus the dollar.

Jennie tops Spotify's 2025 Global Impact List as K-pop soloists eclipse groups
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Spotify has revealed its 2025 Global Impact List for the first half of the year, spotlighting a new wave in K-pop: the rise of soloists over groups on the global stage. A total of 14 Korean acts made the cut, including BTS members Jin and J-Hope, Blackpink's Jennie, Rose and Jisoo, along with Ive, Le Sserafim, NCT's Ten, Tomorrow X Together, GOT7, Seventeen, Meovv, BoyNextDoor and G-Dragon, according to The Korea Herald. The list ranks the 30 most-streamed tracks by Korean artists outside South Korea between January 1 and June 30 — and solo acts are leading the charge. 'One of the most notable trends is the rise of solo K-pop acts,' Spotify said, noting that 19 of the top 30 songs and nine of the top 10 tracks were by solo performers. Spotify added that the list reflects 'a shift in K-pop from group-centred storytelling to more personal narratives and individual artistic identity.' Jennie's Like Jennie, from her March solo album Ruby, topped the chart, followed by Jin's Don't Say You Love Me from his May mini album Echo. All nine of Jennie's featured tracks came from Ruby, while Jisoo's Earthquake and Your Love placed eighth and 27th respectively. Rose's soundtrack single Messy ranked 14th. J-Hope scored four entries: Mona Lisa (No. 4), Sweet Dreams (No. 6), LV Bag (No. 10), and Killin' It Girl (No. 16). Other solo entries included NCT Ten's Stunner, RM and Tablo's Stop The Rain, and G-Dragon's Too Bad. Le Sserafim's Hot led the group entries at No. 9, with additional placements for Ive, TXT, GOT7, Seventeen, Meovv and BoyNextDoor. Spotify also highlighted the growing impact of collaborations and OSTs, pointing to team-ups with Doechii, Dua Lipa and Anderson Paak, and the fast rise of Netflix's Kpop Demon Hunters track Your Idol.
