In a surprising twist in the ongoing battle against cybercrime, a college girl in Mumbai found her bank account unexpectedly filled with money instead of being emptied. Cybercriminals had conducted transactions worth Rs 35 crore in her account, unbeknownst to her.
The incident came to light when the Income Tax Department sent her a notice to pay GST on the transactions.
The girl, residing in Mumbai's Malad West area, was shocked to receive the notice demanding tax on Rs 35 crore worth of transactions. Panicked, she rushed to the Malvani police station and explained that she was merely a student and had no such funds in her account.
Upon thorough investigation, the police discovered that two cybercriminals had opened a bank account using the girl's documents. These fraudsters were using the account to deposit money obtained through cybercrime. The account was employed to store ransom payments after committing fraud.
The police have arrested two individuals, Abhishek Pandey and Akash Vishwakarma, from the Kandivali and Borivali areas in connection with the case.
According to the police, the suspects targeted young job seekers, collecting their PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, and other important documents under the pretext of offering employment. These documents were then used to open new bank accounts, which were subsequently used for depositing fraudulent money.
The investigation revealed that the accused had opened bank accounts for at least 10 to 12 individuals, depositing fraudulent money in each. The funds were withdrawn as needed. The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Vigilance detects 2 farmhouses of officer spread over 46 acres
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance on Monday launched simultaneous raids on the properties and office of a Joint Director-rank officer at eight locations in three districts in connection with its probe into his alleged disproportionate assets. The Vigilance department launched the search operations on the properties of the Soil Conservation and Watershed Development Joint Director, Dayanidhi Bagh, following allegations that he amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. The official was a former Project Director (PD) of the Watershed department in Rayagada. 'Simultaneous searches are being conducted by Odisha Vigilance officials led by 10 deputy superintendents of police, eight inspectors, 10 ASIs and other supporting staffers on the strength of search warrants issued by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhawanipatna,' an officer said. The raids are being carried out at three places in Bhubaneswar, two locations in Kalahandi district and three places in Nabarangpur, the Vigilance officer said. During the raids so far, the Vigilance sleuths detected two farmhouses, a shopping complex and an under-construction building in Nabarangpur district, one flat and a building in Bhubaneswar, 11 acres of land on the outskirts of Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district and bank deposits of Rs 55 lakh. Out of the two farmhouses, one located at Bijraguda is spread over 40 acres of land worth Rs 1 crore, while another farmhouse is spread over 6 acres of land at Phatakote in the same district and is worth Rs 34 lakh. On May 22 this year, the anti-corruption department had arrested four officials of the office of the Project Director of the Watershed department in Rayagada for allegedly embezzling Rs 20 lakh of government money without excavating 23 ponds in different villages of Kashipur block in Rayagada district under MGNREGA. Since then, the former Project Director of the Watershed department in Rayagada was under the scanner of the Vigilance department.

Murarilal Tiwari, a resident of Home Guard Road, lives with his wife and uses minimal electricity. His smart meter showed only 219 units consumed, yet the bill last month was over Rs 69 lakh. Despite submitting a written complaint, no investigation was carried out, and a penalty of Rs 1 lakh was added to his latest bill. Tiwari's neighbour, Mahendra Singh Raghuvanshi, received a bill of Rs 68 lakh. In slum areas like Agya Ram Colony, several labourer families with limited electricity usage have reported bills in lakhs. Many of them previously paid monthly bills of just Rs 100 to Rs 200. Residents allege that the smart meters were installed without prior notice or consent, and that complaints to the electricity department and local authorities have gone unanswered. According to officials from the electricity department, the inflated bills are the result of a software glitch in the billing system. They say that billing errors have been identified in around 15 cases. The smart meters were installed under a central government scheme aimed at ensuring accurate and transparent billing.

Police say Indrakumar agreed to meet her and travelled to Gorakhpur. There, she allegedly staged a fake marriage ceremony with him. Just hours after the ceremony, with the help of two accomplices, she murdered him and dumped his body in a drain. 'Khushi Tiwari contacted Indrakumar and proposed marriage to him. He agreed to marry her. The woman then laid a trap along with her associates," Kushinagar Superintendent of Police Santosh Kumar said as quoted by NDTV.
