Euro 2025: Spain's style vs. England's will to win sets up fascinating final

A title game between defending champion England and World Cup winner Spain is the Women's European Championship final that many wanted. How they got to Basel on Sunday is a whole other story. England has trailed for long periods of three games and survived being on the brink of elimination in both knockout games. Spain is a supremely technical team with a dream midfield pairing two-time Ballon d'Or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati . England has incredible will to win and has called a pair of dramatic game-changers off the bench, Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly. "We always have the confidence that in terms of positioning and having possession, we tend to be very precise and it's difficult to take the ball off us," Putellas said. "So we're ready for anything.? Live Events England captain Leah Williamson praised Spain on Saturday as "the best at what they do, we are well aware of that. We think we are pretty good in some areas." It looks like an ideal final of contrasting styles. One made possible only because England's humbling opening 2-1 loss to France ultimately kept the title holder out of Spain's side of the knockout bracket. Leaders and trailers Four vs. 219. That's the number of minutes Spain has trailed at Euro 2025 games compared to England. Spain fell behind between the 10th and 14th minutes of a group-stage game against Italy when some starters were rested because the team was likely to finish top. England gave up two first-half goals against France in their group, again to Sweden in the quarterfinals and one more to Italy in the semifinals. England's equalizing goals by Agyemang in the knockout games came in, respectively, the 81st and then the sixth minute of stoppage time. "I think we've nearly killed her twice this tournament!" England's Ella Toone said of coach Sarina Wiegman . "She says we've definitely aged her." Spain midfielder Patri Guijarro said of England's resolve: ?There's no fragility. And I think that above all, their competitiveness, is what has got them this far. But what they're doing is not easy.? Trading wins Spain and England each beat the other when winning their recent titles, and they traded wins in a UEFA Nations League group this year. England eliminated Spain 2-1 after extra time in the quarterfinals of its home Euro 2022. Does this sound familiar? England trailed into the 84th that day before two substitutes - Alessia Russo and Toone - assisted and scored to force extra time. Spain got a deserved 1-0 win in the 2023 World Cup final played in Sydney, Australia. Spain is now on a run of 13 wins in 14 games and the blip was a 1-0 loss to England at Wembley in February. Spain won the return game 2-1 on June 3, rallying with two Claudia Pina goals in the second half. Winning women coaches For the eighth straight edition, the title-winning coach will be a woman. England's Wiegman and Spain's Montse Tome were in a minority of seven female head coaches with the 16 teams that started in Euro 2025. They are the last coaches standing to extend a winning run started in 1997. Wiegman won the past two, with England in 2022 and her native Netherlands in 2017. Germany coaches Silvia Neid and Tina Theune won the previous five. Spain never reached the final in 13 previous editions since 1984. Penalty shootouts That first final 41 years ago is the only one decided by a penalty shootout. Sweden beat England in a rain-soaked, near-empty stadium in Luton after a two-leg final ended 1-1. The scorer of Sweden's decisive penalty, and its goal in the first leg, was Pia Sundhage, who coached Switzerland to the quarterfinals here, losing 2-0 to Spain. England's second shootout in Women's Euros history also was against Sweden, last week in the quarterfinals. A madcap affair saw only five of 14 spot kicks scored and Sweden fail twice when scoring would have sent England home. Spain was involved in just one Women's Euros shootout, losing to Austria in the 2017 quarterfinals. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

KL Rahul becomes first Indian opener in 46 years to achieve this record

KL Rahul created history on Saturday by becoming the first Indian opener in 46 years to score over 500 runs in an away Test series. Rahul has been in terrific form in the series, having smashed two tons and is on the cusp of another century. His patient and gritty knock of 87 not out at the end of Day 4 at Manchester helped India play out a wicket-less final session as the team ended the day at 174/2, still 137 runs behind England. However, captain Gill and Rahul steadied the ship with a vital partnership and ensured India batted 62 overs without losing another wicket. Rahul has been consistent across the eight innings he has batted in, facing relentless new ball attacks and challenging conditions. Sunil Gavaskar was the previous Indian to score more than 500 runs in a series as an opener. Live Events England had dominated the fourth Test, posting a mammoth 669 in their first innings, with Ben Stokes adding to India's misery with 141 runs with the bat. The ton came after five wickets with the ball. That performance propelled England to a commanding 311-run lead. As India fight to save the Manchester Test , Rahul's innings will be crucial on the final day.

Udit Raj compares Rahul Gandhi to Babasaheb Ambedkar

Congress leader Udit Raj on Saturday said that Leader of Opposition (LoP) Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the "second Ambedkar" for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) if they listen to what he said during the Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan. Raj compared Rahul Gandhi to Babasaheb Ambedkar and said that the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) must support the statements made by the LoP. Rahul Gandhi aims to replicate it nationwide. His views are visionary. If Dalits and backward classes come forward, our economy will boost. The inequality that prevails in society will be reduced. If OBC understands what Rahul Gandhi said, he will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj told ANI. "OBCs will have to think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again. They should follow and support what Rahul Gandhi said in the Talkatora Stadium conference. If they do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj posted on X. On Friday, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged that not conducting a caste census during the UPA government was a mistake, and said he was determined to correct it. Live Events Speaking at the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' of OBC at Talkatora Stadium in Delhi, he said he failed to understand the issues of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community earlier, unlike those of Dalits, tribals, and women, where he claimed the Congress had done commendable work. "I think about my work, where I did well and where I fell short, and I see two to three things. Land Acquisition Bill, MNREGA, Right to Food, Tribal Bill, and Niyamgiri struggle -- all these things I did well. As far as the issues of tribals, Dalits, and women are concerned, I should get good marks there. I did good work," he said. "One shortcoming remained in the Congress Party and my work, I didn't protect the OBC community the way I should have. The reason is that I didn't deeply understand the OBC issues at that time. Ten to fifteen years ago, I understood the difficulties faced by Dalits. Their issues are visible, they are easily understood, but the problems of OBCs remain hidden. If I had known about your issues and problems at that time, I would have conducted a caste-based census right then. That was my mistake, which I am going to correct," he said, adding that in a way, it's good that it happened, because if I had conducted a caste-based census back then, it wouldn't have been like it is today. He added that Dalits, backwards classes, tribals, and minorities make up 90 per cent of the country's population, yet remain excluded from key decision-making processes, including the Union Budget. Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday reiterated the party's demand for a nationwide caste-based census and the removal of the 50 per cent cap on reservations. He also launched an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi , accusing him of denying rights to backward communities and misleading the country. "I am happy that a large number of people have gathered here and they understand their rights. Conducting a caste-based census in the country and abolishing the 50 per cent reservation limit is our demand. Narendra Modi does not want to give reservations to those who are educationally backwards, but we stand with them," Kharge said. He stressed that the voice of the OBC community will only be heard when they are elected to power.
