Ligue 1 left embarrassed after anti-homophobia matchday causes controversy
The Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic and Le Havre's Ahmed Hassan both concealed the French league's anti-homophobia insignia during Saturday's fixtures.
Nantes forward Mostafa Mohamed withdrew from his side's match against Montpellier, citing personal beliefs — the third time the Egypt international has opted out of the initiative.
Meanwhile, Lens defender Jonathan Gradit was heard directing a homophobic insult at half-time in the tunnel during their game against Monaco.
The string of incidents prompted France's new sports minister, Marie Barsacq, to issue a pointed statement on Sunday, calling for decisive action.
'Football has a massive platform, and the [French Footbal] Federation is determined to put this issue on the clubs' and supporters' agenda,' Barsacq said. 'Homophobic insults and behaviour are no longer acceptable. Society has evolved, and the language in football must change with it. There's a full range of sanctions available, and they must be applied.'
Ligue 1 had planned for players to wear rainbow-coloured symbols on shirts or armbands and display messages in stadiums as part of its annual awareness drive. Yet participation has been uneven in recent years, with some players citing personal or religious reasons for opting out.
Players speaking up is a rare occasion, although the former France international Antoine Griezmann said six years ago: 'If a gay player wants to come out, he might not have all the France players with him, but he will have me.'

The Nice full-back Jonathan Clauss said last week he was pessimistic about the fight against homophobia. 'I think it's a never-ending fight, because there will never be 100% of people who agree. And the very fact that there's a debate is a problem,' he said.

Dolphins release update on hospitalized player who was airlifted from practice after suffering injury
Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos remains hospitalized after he suffered an injury scare during Wednesday's training camp. The 24-year-old was airlifted to a local medical facility after suffering an injury in the final few minutes of the first practice session of this year's camp. Matos' agent, Perlesta Hollingsworth, released an update on the tackle Thursday morning, telling the Miami Herald that his client has 'an above the shoulder type injury.' However, he didn't provide any further clarity on the injury. Hollingsworth also noted that Matos has 'some but not full movement in his right leg.' The agent said: 'It comes and goes.' He went on to reveal that Matos sustained the injury after he bumped into one of his teammates. 'He ran into a defensive lineman when his head was lowered and took the brunt of the impact,' Hollingsworth said. The Dolphins also released a brief update on Matos in a social media statement Thursday morning but did not shed any light on the specifics of the injury. 'Bayron Matos sustained an injury at the end of Wednesday's practice and was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained overnight for evaluation and testing,' the statement read. 'He has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition. He will remain in the care of doctors for continued observation.' The Dolphins suffered another major blow on Wednesday when veteran cornerback Artie Burns injured his knee at practice today and left on crutches. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Burns is feared to have a torn ACL but he's now awaiting an MRI and second opinion to confirm. Born in the Dominican Republic, Matos joined the NFL's International Player Pathway Program and signed with the Dolphins last year. He spent the season on Miami's practice squad but would have been desperately trying to impress head coach Mike McDaniel in training camp. Matos is a 6-foot-7, 334-pound tackle, who previously played college basketball before switching to football. Elsewhere, the Dolphins placed recently signed tight end Darren Waller on the physically unable to perform list along with veteran guard Liam Eichenberg. Waller came out of retirement last month to play on a one-year deal with Miami. He had announced his retirement last June after playing one season for the New York Giants. Eichenberg, a starting guard last season, will likely be a backup in 2025 after the Dolphins signed James Daniels in free agency and selected rookie Jonah Savaiinaea the NFL draft. Also Tuesday, the Dolphins signed offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and waived quarterback Brett Gabbert. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu was placed on the non-football injury list.

Two Premier League giants rule themselves OUT of the race for Alexander Isak
Chelsea and Manchester United have ruled out a move for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who has been left out of their pre-season tour of the Far East after saying he wants to explore a move away. World champions Chelsea have been linked with Isak after Mail Sport's Craig Hope broke the news that Isak is willing to explore a move elsewhere. The Blues hierarchy are happy with their current set-up, that includes Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson, as well as the versatile Joao Pedro as an option up front. The internal suspicion is that their name is being used to drive up a price on the 25-year-old striker. Manager Enzo Maresca plans to lean on rotation in the coming season, especially for managing workloads after their last lengthy campaign, and Chelsea are understood to be unappreciative of them being linked with players they are not actively pursuing for the purpose of creating an auction. Instead, Chelsea are focusing on landing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig and Jorrel Hero from Ajax currently, while they realise there is a need to accelerate their outgoings. Chelsea believe their name is being used to drive up Isak's price, while Man United are unable to compete with a potential bid from rivals after signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha Jackson is expected to stay at Stamford Bridge unless a bid significant enough to turn his and their heads is logged before the transfer window closes. He has been linked with Manchester United but as previously reported by Mail Sport, Chelsea believe he is a potential £100million player. Jackson himself is ready to fight for his place alongside Delap and Joao Pedro, after the two new signings impressed at the Club World Cup in the United States. Man United have currently ruled out a move for Isak and number of other big-money options including Jackson and Benjamin Sesko. With the Sweden striker valued at an astronomical £150million, United are unable to compete with a potential bid from Liverpool and other Premier League rivals after spending more than £130m on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this summer, even though they are keen to sign a new centre-forward. Jackson is also out of United's reach after being valued at between £80-100m by Chelsea, although there still a possibility that a swap deal with Alejandro Garnacho could be explored. Garnacho has been training away from the first-team squad at Carrington in pre-season after being told to find a new club by head coach Ruben Amorim. Sesko is available for closer to £60m after Arsenal moved for Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the RB Leipzig striker, but sources have indicated that he would be too expensive for United as well. Ollie Watkins is one option that has been considered, but he would stretch the budget and Aston Villa are understood to have told United that he is not for sale anyway. It means that Amorim is running out of options after it emerged earlier this week that United are coming to terms with the fact they could kick off the new season against Arsenal next month without a new striker.
