Inquiry into Puri Rath Yatra stampede to be completed in 30 days: Odisha minister
Bhubaneswar: Odisha's Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Sunday said that an administrative inquiry into the Puri stampede incident that left three people dead and 50 others injured would be completed within 30 days.
The stampede took place near Shree Gundicha Temple in Puri early on Sunday during a ceremony related to the ongoing Rath Yatra festivities.
Harichandan said that Development Commissioner Anu Garg will submit her inquiry report to the chief minister within the stipulated 30 days.

"The state government will take stern action against those responsible for the tragic incident," the law minister said.
Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Puri, Kishore Satapathy told PTI that all the injured people have been discharged from a government health facility by 8 pm.

"All the injured have been discharged from a hospital after asserting their health condition. All are now stable," he said.
Replying to a question, the CDMO said that the death toll in the stampede tragedy was three.
Meanwhile, Youth Congress activists gheraoed the chief minister's residence here, demanding the resignation of CM Mohan Charan Majhi and Law Minister P Harichandan.
A scuffle broke out between police personnel and youth Congress members. The agitators were later picked up by the police when they tried to breach barricades near the CM's residence.
In a social media post, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal expressed grief over the stampede incident and described it as "unfortunate".
"The state administration should be careful to avoid such incidents in future. We welcome the immediate decision of the chief minister and express condolences to the families of the deceased."

Bangladesh: 21-year-old minority woman raped, protests erupt at Dhaka University
The alleged rape of a 21-year-old woman from a minority community in central Bangladesh's Cumilla district has ignited widespread anger across the country after a disturbing video of the assault went viral on social media. Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the incident, including the main suspect, Fazor Ali, a local politician affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), PTI reports. Cumilla district's police chief, Nazir Ahmed Khan, confirmed that Fazor Ali was apprehended in a predawn raid in Dhaka's Sayedabad area. Four others were arrested for sharing the victim's image and identity online. The brutal rape of the Bangladeshi woman has triggered protests. Students at Dhaka University held marches condemning the assault, while residents of Jagannath Hall, a dormitory dedicated to minority students, organised processions demanding justice for the survivor. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the BNP, called for exemplary punishment for the perpetrators, emphasising the need for swift and decisive action. In response to the viral video, a High Court in Bangladesh issued a directive demanding the immediate removal of the footage from social media platforms. The two-judge bench also instructed authorities to ensure the survivor's safety and provide her with necessary medical treatment. Reports indicate the survivor was visiting her paternal home in Muradnagar sub-district when the accused allegedly forced his way into the residence late at night. Following the assault, local residents reportedly apprehended and severely beat Fazor Ali, who then fled after being taken to hospital instead of handed over to the police. Some reports cited social media users suggesting that Bangladesh police action was delayed until public outrage surged after the video's circulation. Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, son and advisor to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, expressed outrage over the incident on social media. He blamed the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus for a rise in mob violence, terrorism, and sexual assaults in the past 11 months. Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government last August, Bangladesh has witnessed increasing violence targeting minority communities. Hasina fled to India following a violent street movement, with Yunus assuming control of the interim government shortly thereafter.

'Backdoor NRC' Push? Why 2.93 Crore Bihar Voters Must Prove Citizenship To Cast Their Ballot
The EC kicked off a special, intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar this week. According to an announcement on Saturday, of the total 7.89 crore voters in the state, around 4.96 crore—those who were already registered as of January 1, 2003—only need to fill out and submit the new enumeration form. However, the remaining 2.93 crore voters, which is about 37 per cent of the total, will also need to provide documents proving their Indian citizenship along with the form. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar told news agency PTI on Sunday that the purpose is to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out of the electoral rolls while no ineligible person is part of it. The 37 per cent population will have to provide one of the 11 listed documents to establish their place or date of birth. EC, however, clarified that it does not mean they need to furnish the place/date of birth of their parents if their parents are named in the 2003 voters' list. WHY THE NEED NOW? There is a difference between a usual revision of the electoral roll where one can add delete or edit names and EC's special intensive revision. Intensive revisions were carried out in 1952-56, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1966, 1983-84, 1987-89, 1992, 1993, 1995, 2002, 2003 and 2004, the poll body has revealed—a fact that may put the Congress in a spot. The last intensive revision for Bihar was conducted by the commission in the year 2003. This time, the EC has its reasons for repeating the practice. 'Various reasons such as rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths and inclusion of the names of foreign illegal immigrants have necessitated the conduct of an intensive revision so as to ensure integrity and preparation of error-free electoral rolls," the poll body reasoned on June 24 when it announced its plans for Bihar. WHAT WILL PROVE YOUR CITIZENSHIP? In addition to the enumeration form, electors added to the role after 2003 will have to prove their citizenship in Bihar in this assembly election. Those born in India before July 1, 1987, will have to submit any document from the specified list. But those born in India between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, will have to submit an additional document establishing one parent's date and place of birth. Those born in India after December 2, 2004, will have to submit documents establishing the date and place of birth of both parents. Passports, birth certificates, and SC/ST certificates are some of the valid documents that will do the job among many others. POLITICS & GHOST OF NRC The EC has made it clear that the move will not be limited to Bihar and will be rolled out across the country.
