Ford introduces Dark Edition to gain more Territory in SUV segment

The Citizena day ago
Blue Oval's plush SUV gunning for Chinese brands after outperforming heritage rivals.
After performing better than expected by its own admission in its first year, the Blue Oval hopes the newly-introduced Dark Edition derivative will help the Ford Territory gain further ground in the cut-throat SUV domain.
The Territory was heaven sent for the American carmaker who had no footprint in the local C-SUV segment after dropping the ill-fated Kuga from its portfolio. It has not only outperformed rivals from fellow heritage brands in the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, VW Tiguan, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4, but also taken the fight to the Chinese SUVs. Which is ironic, seeing that the Ford Territory is sourced from China.
Ford Territory gets new top dog
The Ford Territory Dark Edition has been introduced as the line-up's new flagship at the expense of the Titanium. It comes at R733 000, which is a R13k premium over the Titanium. The other two derivatives, the Ambiente and Trend, are kept unchanged.

Based on the Titanium, the Dark Edition features styling enhancements and more tech upgrades, but no changes under the bonnet. Up front, the 1.8-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine produces 138kW of power and 318Nm of torque sent to the front wheels via seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
While the Titanium's styling was easy on the eye, the Ford Territory Dark Edition makes a strong statement. It features a gloss black grille, roof rails and mirror caps along with black wheel arch cladding, black finish at the base of the bumpers, black front skidplate and black Territory lettering on the tailgate. Completing the attractive package is 19-inch ebony alloy wheels and a contrasting black roof.

A touch of class
The spacious interior features black perforated leather seats along with leather trim on the dashboard and doors and black roofliner. Ford is quick to point out the Cyber Orange stitching and seam on the seats, doors, dashboard and steering wheel are reminiscent of the popular Ford Ranger Wildtrak hue.
Making its debut on the Ford Territory is a 360-degree surround-view camera system. It is part of an impressive specification list which also includes dual 12.3-inch displays with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and eight-speaker sound system. Also standard is a wireless smartphone charger, dual-tone panoramic roof, electric tailgate, ambient lighting, electric front seats, front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitor, rain sensing wipers, automatic LED headlights, keyless entry and push-button start.
A wide array of safety systems include advanced features such as: Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring and Traffic Jam Assist.

Out on the road, the Dark Edition is a comfortable and spacious ride. There is enough power on tap for your everyday needs and you don't need any more in a family mover. And using it for that purpose is exactly what we did during the launch drive from Lanseria to Gold Reef City. After a day of family fun, the comfortable back seats meant the exhausted children was in dreamland in no time.

Ford family promise
As The Citizen Motoring has reported, the brakes are rather sensitive, but nothing you can't get used to over time. Throttle calibration, like on almost all Chinese cars, are also no perfect.
And speaking of the Chinese brands, Ford is on an active mission to remind customers of its comprehensive family promise when weighing the Territory up against more affordable like-for-like SUVs. The Ford Family Promise is made up of 21 components which include anything from mobile servicing and two-year guarantee on spare parts to comprehensive insurance.
The Dark Edition is a solid package with the right looks and tech to take the fight to its rivals. Expect bigger things from this plush SUV.

Long-term update: Ford Puma ST-Line entertains on the road less travelled

The R74 between Harrismith and Bergville has some beautiful vistas. Image: Jason Woosey Rising over a crest on the R74, you're suddenly hit with a view of the Northern Drakensberg that startles with its magnificence and takes your breath away. The drive from Johannesburg to Durban is always pleasantly scenic once you reach the escarpment, even if you stick to the default N3 toll route that snakes its way through the Van Reenen's Pass. But if you're looking for something even more picturesque, and a route that's not littered with thousands of trucks, turning onto the R74 just after Harrismith could be an enticing diversion, with mountain views to die for and a scenic amble alongside Sterkfontein Dam. And if you're lucky with the few stop-and-gos that are in place, the diversion only adds around half an hour to your journey time. Having taken delivery of our new Ford Puma long-termer a month prior, I was keen to sample it on some twisty roads, and the R74 seemed like just the answer. The Puma ST-Line Vignale is fitted with sports suspension and 18-inch wheels. Image: Jason Woosey Granted, I was a little concerned about what condition the road might be in, with the Puma being a sporty crossover with relatively low-profile 18-inch rubber and sports suspension. Yet besides a few nasty potholes in the vicinity of Winterton and a short dirt section in the mountains where part of the road has washed away, the R74 proved to be a pleasant drive. Certainly nothing the Puma couldn't handle. The twisty sections through the escarpment highlighted just how entertaining this compact crossover can be. Although I didn't notice too much of a difference in the throttle and steering modulation after flipping into Sport mode, the vehicle felt engaging. The steering is perhaps not quite as communicative and enjoyable as the older Fords before electric power steering, but when it comes to agility and road holding, the Puma is easily the cream of the modern small SUV class. Its 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, with 92kW and 170Nm, delivers surprisingly spirited performance, delivered in a smooth and responsive manner through the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Although the EcoBoost motor is not new, it is still refined and relatively sophisticated by modern standards. Innovations such as an unbalanced flywheel and pulley, and specially designed engine mounts, mean it doesn't suffer from the 'shakes' like many other three-cylinder engines. The bottom line is that Ford's Puma is satisfying and entertaining to drive, although the ride is a little on the firm side by modern SUV standards. The Titanium version, with its regular suspension and 17' rims, could prove a better bet for those seeking more in the way of comfort. The Puma has a sporty shape that's more akin to a car than an SUV. Image: Jason Woosey But ultimately, the Puma is something of a niche SUV. Of course, the R617,500 price tag of our ST-Line Vignale long-termer is prohibitive - it is a European import after all, and none of those are affordable anymore. But the modern SUV buyer is not looking for 'fun to drive'. They're seeking space, comfort, and in many cases, a macho image on the road. But if you're not most people, and you appreciate its sharp driving characteristics and indulgent luxury, the Puma could be right up your alley. The ST-Line Vignale has a gorgeous set of leather seats with diamond-quilted patterns and a massage function for those upfront. Also part of the deal is a 10-speaker B&O sound system, wireless charging pad, and configurable digital instrument cluster. The 8.0-inch central touchscreen is small by modern standards, but its Sync 3 operating system is logical and easy to use, and there are still physical controls for the important things like volume and climate controls. The cabin is very well appointed. Image: Supplied

BMW South Africa bets on new electric architecture to navigate economic headwinds

Peter van Binsbergen, the CEO of BMW South Africa, said the growth of electric mobility within South Africa hinged on the government's support for the infrastructure necessary to sustain this transition. Image: Supplied BMW South Africa is pinning its hopes on its new architecture for electric mobility to gain an edge in an evolving market amidst low domestic economic growth, the impact of the US import tariffs, and an aggressive influx of Chinese cars. High unemployment rates and declining job security are pressuring automotive companies to reassess their strategies while actively seeking solutions to contribute positively to the nation's economic plight. In a landscape where South Africa's economy continues to grow at a staggering rate of less than 1% for nearly a decade, the implications for the automotive industry are profound. Peter van Binsbergen, the CEO of BMW South Africa, has expressed concerns about the broader economic challenges affecting vehicle sales, making it evident that affordability has emerged as a critical issue among consumers. Despite recent figures indicating a 13.6% increase in new vehicle sales, much of this growth is seen within the less than R400 000 price point. This bracket, while significant, signals a shift away from premium brands like BMW, as locally manufactured vehicles decreased by 14.0% for the year to date compared to the same period last year. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad Loading 'Clearly, it's a concern. This country needs robust economic growth to genuinely turn the tide on unemployment," Van Binsbergen said on Thursday. He acknowledged that while BMW cannot solely drive that growth, the company is committed to being part of the solution. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, noting the necessity for government-led initiatives that support both existing Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and attract new players. 'We want to see the number of OEMs in South Africa grow from seven to nine, to 10; each new manufacturer brings along suppliers and job opportunities, vital for revitalising the economy.' The luxury car manufacturer will introduce to the local market next year BMW Group's Neue Klasse generation of models designed with a pure electric focus, which said Van Binsbergen said will reshape the future of electric vehicles (EV). The Neue Klasse, boasting what the German automaker calls "Gen 6" architecture, incorporates a completely new battery system and drivetrain. The sophisticated framework is geared towards maximising efficiency while decreasing energy consumption, waste, rolling resistance, and the overall weight of vehicles. As a result, BMW anticipates the first vehicles built on this architecture will achieve an impressive range of 800 kilometres of range on a single charge, setting a new benchmark not only for the brand but for the entire auto sector. "We believe that this architecture will raise the benchmark for how we envision the EV of the future," Van Binsbergen said. "With its performance capabilities, an unparalleled range, and rapid charging speeds of 400 kW, the Neue Klasse will redefine what customers expect from electric vehicles." The revolution does not stop at range and efficiency; the Neue Klasse introduces a sleek and intuitive digital experience. Featuring a minimalistic design, the vehicle's interior showcases a cutting-edge freeform touchscreen interface and a panoramic digital display that extends across the dashboard. This innovative technological interface utilises voice control and eliminates excessive buttons, resulting in a streamlined user experience that enhances driver engagement. Beyond performance metrics and technological sophistication, the Neue Klasse places a strong emphasis on sustainability. This robust focus includes a commitment to recyclability and a circular economy, reinforcing BMW's position as a leader in responsible manufacturing practices. The firm is keen to align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, ensuring that its operations—especially in South Africa—meet or exceed legal environmental regulations. "Our operations here remain well ahead of the legal requirements, focusing on minimising water usage, emissions, and waste," Van Binsbergen said, emphasising the company's commitment to making a positive social impact through education and community investment. By 2030, BMW Group expects Battery Electric Vehicles to account for 50% of global vehicle sales and will be available for 100% of today's market segments. Since 2015, BMW has been a pioneer in e-mobility in South Africa, partnering with dealers to enhance electric charging infrastructure and advocate for environmentally responsible business practices. However, Van Binsbergen said the growth of electric mobility within South Africa hinged on the government's support for the infrastructure necessary to sustain this transition. "We need adequate charging networks and governmental focus on electromobility to facilitate consumer adoption of electric vehicles," he said. BMW has recently invested R4.2 billion into their South African operations, aimed at maintaining production capacity and safeguarding jobs. Van Binsbergen emphasised that 96% of the vehicles produced at their South African plant were exported, showcasing the company's significant role in driving the national economy despite the challenges in the domestic market. Ford Territory Dark Edition: Stitched to embrace tradition

Top of the range: The Ford Territory Dark Edition replaces the Titanium variant. Ford launched the Territory Dark Edition in South Africa this week with some styling changes to what was already a worthy contender in a very crowded SUV segment. The Territory comes in three trims: Ambiente, Trend and now the Dark Edition, which replaces the Titanium variant that I The Titanium variant felt in sync with competitors as it has a bold exterior mixed with a fancy interior that felt very accomplished. The one thing I did notice with the Titanium variant is that both inside and out, it doesn't have the usual characteristics of a Ford SUV. Whether it was the broad, squared headlights, or other unique styling features that allow you to distinguish a Ford from other SUVs out there, something was just missing. Not that it was bad, but it feels good to step into a vehicle that understands its identity. With the Territory Dark Edition, Ford has made the exterior more stylish and athletic. In the front, the grille has been upgraded to satin black, combined with high-gloss black treatment for the skid plate, fog lamp accents and mirror caps. This bold and assertive exterior styling certainly does allow the vehicle to express itself a bit more. The black 19-inch alloy wheels also add to the visual presence of the vehicle and the 'Territory' branding has been changed to black at the rear of the vehicle. However, it is the interior of the Dark Edition that really uplifts the vehicle and gives it its own identity. Ford has ditched the wooden finish underneath the dashboard that was present in the Titanium variant. Instead, the vehicle has a high-gloss, black-painted strip for the instrument panel that feeds perfectly into the cyber-orange stitching that is lined along the dashboard and on the super comfortable leather seats. The orange stitching is also used in Ford's Wildtrak variants of the Ranger and Everest. This small touch is one of the highlights of the Territory Dark Edition because it gives you the feeling that you are sitting in a Ford. It's amazing how lines of stitching can make a vehicle feel complete. The spacious interior is the other highlight. Backseat passengers are treated to an immense amount of headroom and legroom — and that is standard, no matter which variant you choose. The orange stitching is a welcome addition to the Territory Dark Edition Under the bonnet, the Territory Dark Edition still comes with the 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine that delivers 138kW of power and 318Nm of torque. That means that the ride quality on the Dark Edition and Titanium models are exactly the same — a smooth drive with a solid suspension and more than enough power to get you by. In terms of safety, the Dark Edition has all the features that were present in the Titanium variant such as a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert; adaptive cruise control with stop and go; pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking; lane keep assist; lane departure warning and lane change assist. The Dark Edition gains a 360-degree camera that provides all-round visibility — a boon when getting into tight parking spaces and manoeuvring around obstacles. A 360 degree camera has also been added Ford maintains that the Territory is all about family. The bold, exceptional styling that you get with the Dark Edition is an added bonus. Pricing starts at R593 500 for the Ambiente, the Trend comes in at R650 500 and the Dark Edition is priced at R733 000. The Dark Edition has kept it fresh, like the Titanium model that it replaces, but it embodies the brand. However, it is still a very competitive segment and Ford has produced an all-round quality vehicle at a reasonable price for what you are getting.
