Debutant Musawi aims to justify his promotion to Selangor senior squad
Big boys league: Omid Musawi has stepped up from the Red Giants' youth ranks to their senior squad. — Facebook PETALING JAYA: From promising prospect to first-team player – Omid Musawi's rise through Selangor's ranks is complete. The 24-year-old is now ready to show his speed with the senior team in the Super League next month after earning promotion from the Under-23 squad. Born in Afghanistan but raised in Holland, Musawi had been in the Red Giants' youth squad since October last year. 'Since my transfer last year, from the very first moment I set foot in Selangor, I've felt a strong connection, and I immediately liked the club,' said Musawi. 'I started in the U-23 team, and now I'm proud to be part of the first team. 'The club is fantastic and professional, and I believe I can grow a lot here, not just as a footballer but as a person as well.' Musawi began his football journey through the youth ranks of AGOVV Apeldoorn before joining the academy at FC Twente in 2011. He played 31 matches with the Under-21 squad and went on to score 10 goals, while also making appearances for the club's reserve team. Musawi then continued his development at the youth set-ups of Vitesse and PEC Zwolle before transitioning to senior football when he flew to Australia and signed with Para Hills Knights, playing in the State League 1. Then moving to Malaysia in 2024, Musawi was initially featured in Selangor's Under-23 squad for the MFL Cup, making a notable impact with a strong performance which saw him training with the first team throughout last season. Musawi made his international debut for Afghanistan on June 1, 2022, against Vietnam, and has since earned nine caps for his country. Musawi comes as Selangor's third foreign signing after the club announced the arrival of Brazilian firepower Chrigor Moraes and Thai international Picha Autra. The Red Giants could be welcoming a fourth signing soon, as a deal with former Kedah and Chonburi forward Willian Lira looks to be confirmed.

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor have promoted Afghanistan striker Omid Musawi from their Under-23 squad as they look to strengthen their frontline for the new M-League season. The 24-year-old, known for his pace, joined the Red Giants' U-23 side in October last year and is now eager to make his mark with the senior team. "Since arriving last year, I felt right at home," said Omid in a statement. "Selangor are a professional, development-focused club, and I'm proud to now be part of the senior team. This is a great opportunity for me to grow, not just as a player but as a person." "My aim is to play as much as I can, give my all, and help the team succeed." Born in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, and raised in the Netherlands, Omid began his career in the youth ranks of AGOVV Apeldoorn before moving to FC Twente's academy in 2011. He went on to score 10 goals and provide three assists in 31 matches with Twente's youth squad and also featured for their reserve side. His development continued with stints in the youth setups of Vitesse and PEC Zwolle, later earning promotion to the senior squads of both Dutch clubs. Omid's professional breakthrough came in Australia with Para Hills Knights SC, where he made 26 appearances, including in the National Premier Leagues South Australia. He made his senior international debut for Afghanistan in a friendly against Vietnam on June 1, 2022, and has since earned nine caps. Selangor have also signed Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes and Thai international midfielder Picha Autra. The club are reportedly close to finalising a deal for former Kedah and Chonburi forward Willian Lira.
