EastEnders legend quits Albert Square TONIGHT in heart-wrenching scenes - leaving best friend crushed

An EastEnders legend quits Albert Square during Tuesday's episode of the BBC soap.
This evening's instalment (15 July) - which is available to watch on iPlayer now - will see Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) and his wife Julie (Karen Henthorn) wave goodbye to Walford in heart-wrenching scenes.
Right at the end of the instalment the pair are stood outside next to a taxi ahead of their journey home.
Julie tells Nigel: 'I think we should just go.
'Sometimes it's easier on everyone to just slip out. I think Phil might prefer it that way.'
As he tries to walk away, she says: 'You've got me!'

Nigel steps into the car and Julie tells him: 'Just focus on me.'
Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) is seen watching them from afar and smiles at the pair.
Julie gives her eye contact and steps into the taxi.
As Nigel looks out of the window of the vehicle, Linda smiles back at him.
'Let's get going, we don't want to miss that train, do we?' Linda tells Nigel as she puts her seat belt on.
The taxi drives away from the Square and Phil is captured sitting in his kitchen looking at an old picture of Nigel.
Some have taken to X to share their heartbreak already.
One said: 'I am so sad Nigel is gone. Loved the storyline and now poor Phil is alone again, hope they bring him back soon.'
'Oh no Nigel! I didn't think he was really leaving. I had hoped Julie would decide to move in to help Phil with him.'
'Goodbye, Nigel.'
'phil and linda in todays ep… i'm grateful they didn't kill nigel off the show he's been such a pleasure to watch these past few weeks.'
Just last month Karen's return to the BBC soap was confirmed.
The actress, 62, previously played Julie Bates on the show between 1997 and 1998.
Her alter-ego was last seen in Walford 27 years ago when she moved to Scotland with her husband Nigel.
But as viewers will know, Nigel returned to the Square in 2024, and told everyone that they had split... but it was actually he wanted to deal with his dementia by himself.
The cafe worker felt as if he was weighing his wife down.
However she returned to the Square to tell him that she's sticking around.
Karen said of reprising her role: 'It's very surreal to be back in Albert Square after 27 years and working with the delightful Paul Bradley again - it's scary how fast the time has gone!
'Julie has got some awful surprises ahead of her after the initial relief she feels to discover Nigel is still alive.
'It's been great to film with Paul and Steve (McFadden), who are such lovely actors, as Julie discovers Nigel's dementia diagnosis and why he chose to hide it from her.'
Executive Producer Ben Wadey added: 'We are delighted to have Karen Henthorn returning to reprise her role as Julie, who arrives looking for Nigel.
'Julie hasn't seen Nigel in almost two years and is unaware of his diagnosis and reasons for leaving, so her arrival will pose questions for the pair of them.'
EastEnders isn't the only role that Karen has held on a soap over the years - she also played Teresa Bryant on Coronation Street between 2007 and 2009.
She's also been in Doctors, Heartbeat and Trollied.
The star also played the school inspector in Young Dracula.
More recently she took on the role of Emily in The Listeners.
The actress currently teaches students at the Italia Conti Academy.
Meanwhile Paul appeared on EastEnders between 1992 and 1998, followed by another stint in 2024.
He has also landed roles in various other TV shows such as Holby City, My Family, Doctors, The Bill and Beyond Paradise.
Announcing the news that he would be back on the Square, Paul said:
He said: 'I'm thrilled and honoured to be back as Nigel. Despite it being such a long time ago, I still get recognised as Nigel in the street.
'Returning has been great as I'm so familiar with many of the faces at EastEnders, and they are a very friendly bunch.
'It's fantastic to work with Steve McFadden again - I'm a huge admirer of his work, and he sets the bar really high. I'm having a really good time.'
EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.

EXCLUSIVE Helen Flanagan is seen back behind the wheel of her £66k car for the first time since being banned from driving for six months

Helen Flanagan has been pictured back behind the wheel of her car for the first time on Friday following her six-month driving ban. Back in January, the ex Corrie actress, 34, t old the court her ex-footballer boyfriend Robbie Talbot was driving her £66,000 Audi Q7 when it was caught speeding twice. She was subsequently barred from the roads for six months, despite claiming she was struggling financially and would not be able to afford taxis to get her children to school. And Helen appeared in good spirits as she made the most of her newfound road freedom as she ran errands in her car near her home in Bolton. Keeping things casual for the low-key outing, the soap actress dressed down in a grey tracksuit and white trainers as she filled up her petrol. Helen, who sported gold earrings and shades atop her slicked-back hair, was also seen stopping off for a coffee, looking relaxed while carrying her takeaway cup ack to her vehicle. The blonde beauty certainly looked pleased to be reunited with her luxury Audi just weeks after ranting about the loss of her driving licence. In a chaotic social media post last month, Helen complained what a 'pain in the a***' it had been without a car and had been unable to run errands or go shopping for essentials due to living so remotely. Taking to her Instagram Stories she explained her ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) had caused her to mix up paperwork to reapply for her licence, meaning the process would now be delayed further. 'I literally can't tell you what a pain in the a*** not having [my driving licence] because I live in the middle of nowhere, and of course I haven't been driving'. 'It's just been so b****y annoying, for example we are out of loo roll now and I can't pop out to the shops to get loo roll so my friend has to bring me loo roll'. In court Helen said her isolated moorland home meant it was a 10-minute drive even to go to the shops to buy bread and milk, and that she would 'really struggle without a car' in the remote location. The actress, who lives near Bolton, Greater Manchester, said she earned £70,000 last year – but said her income varies and that she could not afford a £10 taxi to take her son to nursery. Prosecutor Stephen Kirk told how Helen, who already had six penalty points for speeding, failed to declare who had been driving the car when it was caught speeding at locations on Merseyside in June last year, doing 42mph in a 30mph limit and 51mph in a 40mph limit. Magistrates gave her six more points for each offence - taking her total to 18 points, well above the 12-point threshold when magistrates normally impose a ban unless there is 'exceptional hardship'. Making her doomed plea to keep her licence, Helen said at the time: 'I am so sorry. I stupidly thought it was acceptable for my boyfriend to explain he was the one driving and it wasn't me.' Helen told the court how she is a 'full-time' mother to children Matilda, nine, Delilah, six, and Charlie, three, using the car to take them to nursery, school and activities. She said: 'My job really is being a mum at home. Their dad works away. It's really difficult at the moment now for me to be earning money. I earn money on social media but it kind of varies what I earn.' She added: 'I think there might be a perception maybe that I would easily be able to afford a driver but that's quite far from the case. 'I've got enough money in my account to pay off my tax and my VAT and basically that's about it.'

ITV viewers 'have newfound respect' for Adil Ray as he takes VERY catty swipe at Lorraine Kelly as she hosts show with granddaughter on her lap

ITV viewers were left in stitches by Adil Ray as he took a pointed swipe at Lorraine Kelly during Friday's instalment of Good Morning Britain. Lorraine, 65, who usually presents her show Monday to Thursday, gave fans a shock as she appeared on GMB to tell Adil and Kate Garraway, 58, what to expect on her instalment of Lorraine. Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am to 9am, which is then followed by Lorraine between 9am and 10am. Usually on Fridays, Christine Lampard, 46, or Ranvir Singh, 47, steps in for the Scottish presenter. But on GMB, Adil giggled: 'Lorraine is here after 9... In for Lorraine, in fact.' 'How are you doing? It's lovely to see you both?' she laughed back. An ITV viewer admitted that had a 'newfound respect' for Adil Ray as he took a VERY catty swipe at Lorraine Kelly during Friday's instalment of Good Morning Britain Lorraine was accompanied by her granddaughter Billie live on the show, who was welcomed into the world on 29 August last year. She said: 'As you can see, a very special guest with me all morning, baby Billie is here. Hooray! 'Good to see you little lamb. She's just the best. The absolute best. 'She's nearly a year old. Next month. You're a year old - we might have to have a party. It's very, very exciting.' Many viewers rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their confusion over why Lorraine is presenting on Friday. 'Adil straight up to her face just said 'Lorraine sitting in for Lorraine' I have a newfound respect for him now #lorraine # gmb.' 'Why is she in on a Friday? #lorraine.' '#lorraine oh no thought it was going to be Christine.' 'Lorraine hosting her own show on a Friday.' 'Sorry I'm confused, it's a Friday yet #Lorraine is actually hosting her own show???????' 'Lorraine?!?! ON A FRIDAY.' It comes after it was revealed back in May that Lorraine and Loose Women have been axed for half the year. Lorraine's runtime has been slashed by 30 minutes, as ITV Daytime bosses announced huge cuts today with job losses in excess of 220. Lorraine Kelly faced the brunt of the cuts with Good Morning Britain now taking her 9-10am slot for 22 weeks of the year. For the remaining 30 weeks of the year, Lorraine will present five days a week, meaning her Friday stand-in presenters Ranvir Singh and Christine Lampard are no longer needed for the show. Lorraine's show has also been slashed in half, now running for just 30 minutes from 9:30am to 10am. ITV sources told MailOnline that they have decided to cut resources on their daytime schedule so that the network can invest in more drama programmes. One said: 'There is a need to cost save but also so that the right money can go to the right shows and with everything getting more expensive these things have to be looked at.' Kevin Lygo, Managing Director of ITV's Media and Entertainment Division, explained the changes: 'Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust as well generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres. 'These changes also allow us to consolidate our news operations and expand our national, international and regional news output and to build upon our proud history of trusted journalism at a time when our viewers need accurate, unbiased news coverage more than ever.' Lygo added: 'I recognise that our plans will have an impact on staff off screen in our Daytime production teams, and we will work with ITV Studios and ITN as they manage these changes to produce the shows differently from next year, and support them through this transition. 'Daytime has been a core element of ITV's schedule for over 40 years and these changes will set ITV up to continue to bring viewers award winning news, views and discussion as we enter our eighth decade.' Earlier this week it was revealed that Lorraine has reportedly signed a major deal with ITV rival Channel 4 for a huge budget travel series after her daytime show was hit by brutal cuts. A source told the publication: 'Channel 4 were delighted to have Lorraine on board. It was exciting for Lorraine to do something different and be on location again. 'Despite the apparent slight in the ITV daytime shake-up, Lorraine's loyal fanbase isn't to be underestimated and they will follow her wherever she goes. The source continued and claimed she is 'gutted' over the cuts and is now 'opening her eyes' to upcoming options in the industry. An ITV spokesperson told MailOnline: 'We have always said that from January 2026, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women will be three editorially distinct shows which will be produced by one team. 'These changes are not about the performance of the shows or the staff who produce them, with Lorraine only last month achieving its highest audience share in four years. 'We can assure our viewers that their favourite daytime shows will remain familiar to them on screen.'
