The Pitt Season 2: What a 50-Year-Old Novel Might Reveal About Dr. Robby's Storyline

Yahoo4 days ago

The June 16 announcement that The Pitt was in production on Season 2 was accompanied by a compelling visual aid: A behind-the-scenes video that showed Dr. Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch enter the emergency department at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center in a heavy jacket — a jacket you wouldn't typically see a Yinzer wear on Fourth of July weekend, at which point the temperature in Western Pennsylvania hovers around 85 degrees.
Also of note: Robby appears to have a motorcycle helmet strapped to his Tom Bihn travel backpack.

So, has our wounded hero bought himself a hog? And is it possible that he is just returning from a long, potentially healing journey after reaching his breaking point at the end of Season 1?
Series star/executive producer Noah Wyle might have inadvertently answered both of those questions during an appearance on The Checkup With Dr. Mike podcast, on which he disclosed that he recently reread Robert M. Pirsig's seminal 1974 book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values, for 'somewhat creative reasons having to do with Season 2 and Robby.'
For those who have not read it, don't let its title fool you: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is not about motorcycle maintenance — at least not exclusively. Amazon describes it as 'a narration of a summer motorcycle trip undertaken by a father and his son' — a 540-page novel that 'becomes a personal and philosophical odyssey into fundamental questions on how to live. The narrator's relationship with his son leads to a powerful self-reckoning,' while 'the craft of motorcycle maintenance leads to an austerely beautiful process for reconciling science, religion and humanism.'
Now, as series creator R. Scott Gemmill previously told me, The Pitt Season 2 will see Robby 'getting himself mentally healthy again' — but how, exactly, he intends to do that, remains unknown. Will the ED chief take Dr. Jack Abbot up on his offer and reach out to his therapist? Or will he embark on 'a personal and philosophical odyssey' and explore 'fundamental questions on how to live'? And will his fractured relationship with Jake lead to 'a powerful self-reckoning'?
If Robby's journey mirrors the narrator's in Pirsig's book, perhaps the above-mentioned first look shows our protagonist upon his return from a long, healing journey — either one he took alone, or one he took with Janey's son in an attempt to mend their relationship following Leah's death. Whereas Season 1 flashed back to the day Robby took Dr. Adamson off ECMO, Season 2 could show flashbacks from Robby's trip, in turn offering audiences a peek at our protagonist's life outside the fluorescent-lit confines of PTMC. And though Robby might think he's healed when he clocks in again, perhaps his next 15-hour shift will reveal that he still needs professional help.
'In the first season, Robby has an Adamson on his shoulder,' Wyle told Dr. Mike. 'But in Season 2, everybody has an Adamson on their shoulder. How does everybody get through a mass casualty event, 10 months on the other side of it, and move on? Answering those questions for every character as thoughtfully as we can has been the thesis of Season 2. It's almost as if the first season was about diagnosing the problem, and Season 2 is about finding a method of treatment.'
Robby, he said, has to be 'a bit of a leader in advocating for some mental health… but whether he takes it on himself will be an interesting journey.'
So, what do you think? Am I onto something with this theory? Or do you anticipate that all of Robby's healing will occur on screen, during his Season 2 shift? Sound off in Comments.

There will be an encore round running the following weekend (Oct. 3–5). Tickets go on sale July 25. For the first time ever, Spider-Man 2.1 will hit theaters in 4K. The longer version of the critically acclaimed sequel includes additional and extended scenes that deepen the story and expand the action. Earlier this year, the entire Spider-Man live-action lineup had a brief return to theaters via Cinemark, including Tom Holland's MCU entries and Andrew Garfield's two Amazing films. Jesse Watters' New Nickname For Zohran Mamdani Makes Him Sound Ridiculously Cool

Fox News host Jesse Watters has unveiled a new nickname for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani — and people can't help but notice it makes him sound really, really cool. Over the past few days, the commentator has referred to the progressive rising star as 'Zohran the Destroyer,' or simply 'the destroyer,' multiple times. In a viral screenshot from Thursday's episode of 'Jesse Watters Primetime,' a chyron reads, 'ZOHRAN THE DESTROYER WRECKS DEM PARTY.' The segment touched on angst from some Democrats over Mamdani threatening the status quo. The democratic socialist beat former New York Gov. and accused sexual harasser Andrew Cuomo in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday in a stunning upset. 'What's Zohran the Destroyer got going for him?' Watters asked in a monologue that trashed Mamdani's policy proposals and mocked his supporters. He also called him a 'smooth-talking assassin.' On 'The Five' on Friday, Watters mused, 'Zohran the Destroyer is about to give Karl Marx a woke makeover, if Democrats can't stop him from becoming the next mayor of New York City.' On social media, people joked about how awesome the moniker made Mamdani sound. ‘Sirens' Star's Mystery Thriller ‘Drop' Gets Peacock Streaming Date

Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar in "Drop." Drop — a mystery thriller starring Netflix's Sirens star Meghann Fahy and 1923's Brandon Sklenar — is coming soon to streaming on Peacock. Directed by Christopher Landon, Drop was released in theaters on April 11 before debuting on digital streaming via premium video on demand on April 29. The summary for Drop reads, "Meghann Fahy (Devon in Sirens) plays Violet, a widowed mother on her first date in years, who arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry (Brandon Sklenar) is more charming and handsome than she expected. "But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.' According to Peacock, Drop will begin streaming on the NBC Universal platform on Friday, July 11. For those who haven't subscribed to the platform, Peacock offers an ad-based package for $7.99 per month or $79 per year and an ad-free package for $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year. Meghann Fahy Gets Top Billing On 'Drop' Following Meghann Fahy's success of Max's The White Lotus Season 2 — which earned her an Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2023 — and a pivotal supporting role in Netflix's limited series The Perfect Couple, Fahy is billed as the lead actor in Drop. In an interview with Variety before Drop was released in theaters in April, Fahy told the trade publication that she was excited to be No. 1 on the call sheet for the film. 'It's been amazing. It's so interesting when you go film something, and then a year later, you get to see and share it with people,' Fahy told Variety. 'It's a really, really cool moment. I loved the process of making the film so much. It was a very new experience for me in a lot of ways. I learned a ton, and I met some amazing people.' Ultimately, Fahy knows there are several other talented people who come together to make movies happen. 'I formed such close relationships with the cast, especially Brandon Sklenar and [fellow actor] Jeffrey Self, so sharing the moment with them is something I will remember when I look back because it felt like such a team sport,' Fahy told Variety. 'Everybody in the cast was there every day, from the beginning to the end of the day, whether or not they ended up being on camera, because we never knew how far we were going to get [in each scene]," she added. "So, it felt very communal, like, everybody was a big part of the making of the film.' Drop earned $16.6 million domestically and $12 million internationally for a worldwide box office gross of $28.6 million. Drop had an $11 million production budget before prints and advertising, per The Numbers. Drop was a big hit with Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film an 84% 'fresh' rating based on 220 reviews. Drop also earned a 79% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings. Rated PG-13, Drop begins streaming on Peacock on July 11.
