BJP should shed ‘anti-BC' mindset: Minister Ponnam Prabhakar
Speaking to the media in Karimnagar on Saturday, Mr Prabhakar said the Congress party is the champion of social justice.
The Telangana Assembly passed a Bill increasing reservation of BCs to 42%, he said, alleging that the BJP is conspiring to obstruct the move on one pretext or the other to jeopardise the interests of BCs.
Asserting that the Congress party has the proven track record of championing the cause of BCs and other weaker sections, he alleged that the BJP earned notoriety for pursuing divisive politics and working against the interests of BCs since the era of the Mandal Commission.
'If the BJP is sincere for the empowerment of BCs, it should get the 42% quota Bill approved by the Centre and cooperate to ensure local body elections in the State before September 30, the timeframe set by the High Court to conduct the local body polls,' he added.

Muslim hawker assaulted in Meerut; attempt to create fear, says opposition
After a Muslim cloth peddler was brutally assaulted at Fatehpur Narayan village, under Kithor police station limits, in Meerut district, opposition parties alleged on Sunday that the incident was a targeted attack designed to create fear. While villagers and police claimed Arif was mistaken for a thief, the victim's wife alleged that they were being forced to modify the complaint by the police. 'We have submitted a petition; the case is yet to be registered. My husband, who was selling clothes, was beaten, and now we are being pressured to change the petition by the Sub-Inspector,' said Tausima, the victim's wife, in a viral video. The Hindu reached out to the Meerut police, including the Circle Officer, but failed to get any response. Mob attack The incident happened on July 26. The victim, along with one companion, was selling clothes in the village when 10-15 people gathered and began calling him a thief, demanded his Aadhar card, and proceeded to beat him up. He was taken to Meerut Medical College for treatment. 'This incident shows that there is a complete breakdown of law and order in the state. No one has the right to take the law into their hands; some people emboldened by the dispensation are attempting to create a Jangal Raj kind of situation in U.P.; it is a lynching attempt that aims to create fear,' said Imran Masood, Lok Sabha MP and a senior Congress leader. Lok Sabha MP from Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari, said, 'I condemn this incident, it is clear that the accused have no fear of the administration and rule of law. Negi accuses BJP of insulting national flag
Shimla, Jul 27(UNI) Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi has strongly criticized BJP leaders and a few local businessmen in Thunag for allegedly insulting the national flag during a protest against the government's decision to shift the Horticulture College from Thunag to a safer location. Negi defended the Congress government's move to relocate the college, citing the recent flash floods and the risk to students' lives. "It is wrong to run a college in a disaster-prone area just to protect business interests of a few people," he said, adding that students living in rented homes in Thunag had themselves requested relocation due to repeated disasters in 2023 and 2024. The Minister said that BJP workers and a handful of shopkeepers tried to block the state government's decision and even created a scene during his visit to the area. 'They surrounded my vehicle, threw black cloths and a slipper-like object at it, and disrespected the tricolour mounted on the car,' he alleged. 'This act amounts to treason,' he added. Negi also questioned the BJP's silence over the incomplete infrastructure of the college. "Out of the total Rs 270 crore sanctioned, only Rs 10 crore was spent when BJP was in power," he claimed. He said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is personally monitoring the situation and relief work is going on without any resistance from the common people. 'Only some BJP leaders and businessmen are trying to politicize the issue,' Negi said. Negi further targeted BJP leader Dr. Rajeev Bindal, saying, 'The real shameful act is the insult of the national flag, not the relocation of the college meant to save lives.'
