Jaguars pass on Trevor Lawrence, take new QB, in mock draft of active NFL players

USA Today17 hours ago
In a unique 7-round mock draft of active NFL players, the Jaguars pass on QB Trevor Lawrence in the first round.
The Jacksonville Jaguars passed on quarterback Trevor Lawrence in a very unique seven-round mock draft put together by Chad Reuter of NFL.com.
In this mock, rather than selecting the top college prospects or redrafting past drafts, Reuter selected only active NFL players. In doing so, he had one goal in mind for each team, which was to "win now."
So, who did the Jaguars pick instead of Lawrence, and what did their seven-man draft class end up looking like?
Jacksonville Jaguars pick QB Justin Herbert
Holding the fifth overall pick in this mock, Jacksonville took LA Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Over his career, Herbert has completed 66.5% of his passes at 7.2 yards per attempt with 137 touchdowns to 45 interceptions. He was the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year and is a one-time Pro Bowler.
Herbert and the Chargers have been to the playoffs twice, with one of those losses coming to the Jaguars on an incredible second-half comeback led by Lawrence.
Lawrence ended up being taken 16th overall in this mock by Arizona.
Who else did the Jaguars pick in this mock draft?
Around Herbert, the Jaguars prioritize the trenches, taking Wirfs in Round 2. Consistent success for any offense begins up front with time in the pocket for a quarterback and the offense having a run game to lean on. Wirfs was PFF's highest-graded pass-blocking tackle last season.
At the skill positions, the Jaguars land Jeanty, who was the sixth overall pick in this year's draft after a dominant 2024 season at Boise State. Loveland brings a field-stretching and heavy pass-catching presence to the tight end position, while Jeudy is coming off his best season, totaling 1,229 receiving yards.
On defense, Hunter was sixth in pressures in 2024, and as we know, the name of the game is getting after the quarterback. Lenoir, meanwhile, has experience playing both inside and out, and has had excellent ball production in his career, which includes eight interceptions and 16 pass breakups over the last three seasons.

Steelers' Terry Bradshaw Cracks Top 15 Best NFL Quarterbacks Ever

Steelers' Terry Bradshaw Cracks Top 15 Best NFL Quarterbacks Ever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Before Terry Bradshaw (along with a few others) joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in the early 1970s, the franchise was a forgotten one, with zero success in the league during its history. Advertisement That all changed beginning in 1970 when Bradshaw was selected No. 1 overall by the Steelers. Bradshaw went on an incredible run to help put the Steelers on the map. That was continued in the 2000s by Ben Roethlisberger. Now, both appear on CBS Sports' list of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. 18. Ben Roethlisberger "'Big Ben' started his career by going 13-0 as Pittsburgh's starter during his rookie season, the best mark ever by a rookie quarterback. Roethlisberger followed that up a year later by becoming the youngest quarterback to win the Super Bowl as the Steelers became the first six-seed to win it all. Three years later, Roethlisberger capped off one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time by completing one of the most clutch passes in NFL history when he hit Santonio Holmes for the game-winning score. Advertisement "Roethlisberger was named to six Pro Bowls and is fifth all-time in career passing yards and eighth in career touchdown passes. He's the only player in history with three games with at least 500 passing yards. He had back-to-back games with six touchdown passes back in 2014." While Roethlisberger cracks the top 20, Bradshaw is just a bit higher and breaks into the top 15 at No. 13. 13. Terry Bradshaw "Believe it or not, Bradshaw is the only Steelers player who has won league MVP, doing so in 1978. Bradshaw also won the first of two consecutive Super Bowl MVP awards that season while becoming the first (and only) QB to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice. In Super Bowl XIII (played at the end of the '78 season), Bradshaw threw for then-Super Bowl records 318 yards and four touchdowns in Pittsburgh's 35-31 win over the Cowboys in the first Super Bowl played between two franchises that had already won multiple Super Bowls. Patrick Mahomes Shares Heartfelt Message From Mom Randi Mahomes on Friday

Patrick Mahomes Shares Heartfelt Message From Mom Randi Mahomes on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs' training facility may have been closed for the holiday, but Randi Mahomes, mother of NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was busy documenting a calm family scene back home on Friday. A former athlete herself, Randi married Pat Mahomes Sr., a longtime MLB pitcher, and helped raise three children, including Patrick, his brother Jackson and half-sister Mia. Patrick and wife Brittany have three children: Sterling Skye (4), Patrick "Bronze" III (2) and Golden Raye (6 months). Within hours, Patrick reposted it, with nothing more than a single, "❤️." Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15).Denny Medley-Imagn Images Mahomes also already holds numerous NFL records, including fastest to 30,000 career passing yards (103 games) and most total yards by a quarterback in a season (5,614 in 2022). Despite coming short of a historic three-peat last season, the Chiefs remain among the elite franchises in the NFL, with high hopes of competing for another Lombardi Trophy next season. Bill Belichick nearly made ex-Patriots star Stephon Gilmore cry in front of team

Bill Belichick is not afraid to rip a player a new one, and Stephon Gilmore was apparently no exception. Gilmore, 34, recalled a time when Belichick lashed out at him during a team meeting not long after the cornerback first arrived in New England in 2017. 'He killed me one day, bro. It was when I first got there,' the five-time Pro Bowler said during an appearance on The Money Down Podcast on Thursday. 'I was pressed down on the receiver. It was a bunch route. …And I got picked. Bro, he killed me the next meeting. Advertisement 3 Head coach Bill Belichick of the North Carolina Tar Heels coaches at Kenan Stadium on April 12, 2025 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Getty Images 'I almost cried, how he did me. I ain't going to lie to you. I went to the bathroom, like man, bro. I can tell you one thing: I ain't never got picked again after that.' Gilmore, who wound up spending four years with the Patriots, was named to two All-Pro teams and took home Defensive Player of the Year honors for 2019 during his tenure there. Getty Images The South Carolina alum was also a member of New England's Super Bowl championship squad in 2018. Despite Belichick's apparent outburst toward Gilmore, the cornerback has always talked highly of the legendary coach, calling him the 'greatest' he's ever been around while criticizing the portrayal of him in the 'Dynasty' docuseries, which aired on Apple TV+ last year. 'Just watched The Dynasty. Bill was the greatest coach I've ever been around. Don't let that fool you. I'll never forget we were a predominantly man team during the 2018 season all the way up to the Super Bowl. When we played the Rams we switched to Zone,' Gilmore posted on X then. Gilmore has made clear, however, that he hopes to be on a team for the upcoming season. Advertisement 'I wanna play this year. It's just gotta be the right situation…I'm not just going to sign anywhere, it gotta be the right situation,' Gilmore said during the podcast. 'I still love the game. I still can contribute. 'It just gotta be the right place.'
