Netflix's Department Q fans must watch ‘mind-blowing' series from 12 years ago
Devotees of Department Q who have already binged this gripping new Netflix thriller should make a beeline for Prime Video for more.
Matthew Goode stars as the brilliant but self-absorbed detective Carl Morck, tasked with cracking cold cases in a grimy basement office to boost the reputation of the Edinburgh police department.
Meanwhile, his colleagues upstairs grapple with a seemingly random shooting that resulted in the death of a new officer and left Carl's partner paralysed.
The inaugural nine-part season has garnered glowing reviews from Netflix subscribers since its release at the end of May this year.
However, viewers who haven't scrutinised the credits might be taken aback to discover that the thriller isn't entirely original, reports the Express.
In fact, it draws inspiration from a series of 10 Danish Nordic crime novels known as Afdeling Q penned by author Jussi Adler-Olsen.
These were subsequently transformed into an ongoing film series, kicking off in 2013 with four more instalments yet to be released.
Fans of the Scottish adaptation by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani can celebrate, as the first three entries in the original series, The Keeper of Lost Causes, The Absent One and A Conspiracy of Faith, are currently available to stream on Viaplay UK via Amazon Prime.
If you're still on the fence, take a look at some rave reviews of the first film which thriller enthusiasts insist is well worth a watch.
A Google reviewer couldn't hold back their enthusiasm, declaring: "Please watch this series. It is mind-blowing to see how much engaging the story is. Definitely a better one. I'll give it 9/10."
Echoing the praise, another fan gushed: "One of the most suspenseful movies I have seen recently. The characters are flawless, real and gutsy."
A further review emphasised the movie's power to captivate, saying: "The concept of the movie is gripping and keeps you glued until the very end of the movie. Danish suspense/murder mystery movies must get more traction worldwide.
"This was one of those movies which has almost all elements, stellar acting, magnificent story, excellent editing, great screenplay and direction."
Rounding off the glowing testimonials, a final viewer extolled: "One of the best crime thrillers ever made. You'll never be disappointed watching this."
While Netflix remains tight-lipped about a sequel to Department Q, fans are encouraged not to miss out on what could be the ultimate binge-worthy experience.
Department Q is available to stream on Netflix. Watch the original Department Q films on Viaplay via Amazon Prime.

The widely acclaimed adaptation of Sally Rooney's bestselling novel of the same name made waves when it first came out in 2020 on BBC Three – leaving a trail of broken hearts in its wake. The Ireland-based story follows Connell and Marianne from their late teens through to their early 20s as they navigate love, loss and all the ways your first love can haunt you. Portrayed by Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, the roles not only catapulted them into global fame but the show landed seven Bafta nominations, including a win for Paul as lead actor. The show has touched several lives for its portrait of the complex relationship our star-crossed lovers share – from their school days when Marianne felt socially rejected by Paul through their early adulthood as they both grow into themselves, and must navigate their own traumas. Set across 12 episodes, it has topped the list of people's favourite TV shows and amassed a loyal fanbase. 'Deeply moving. Lives long in the memory after watching,' Dermot M wrote on Rotten Tomatoes where it enjoys an outstanding 91% score. 'Powerful Perfection. Doesn't get any better than this. Literally my favorite series to ever been made. No flaws from me. Will re-watch again and again. Have the tissues ready every time,' Jackie H said. I have never experienced such a variety of feelings during a show. I was happy, sad, laughed, cried and at some point felt an immense anguish. That's how well these actors performed,' Jerry F declared. Over on Google Reviews, Noel Woodward described it as 'wondrous, magical, messy, complicated and oh so relatable'. 'A beautiful, patient, poetic series about messy love between two damaged, self-loathing people who find meaning and transcendence in a relationship despite their mistakes and inability to quiet the noise in their heads,' Michael Duran echoed. Adeline Jugler called it 'exquisite' while Andy David called it 'painfully beautiful in every possible way'. Last year, Twisters star Daisy told the BBC she 'loves those characters [and] would be wonderful to explore them again.' She added: 'Normal People was a series that was such a lockdown phenomenon. I think it introduced Paul and I to a lot of people and film-makers.' More Trending Since the show both have seen huge success in their careers with Paul landing an Oscar nomination for Aftersun and featuring in the blockbuster sequel Gladiator II. Meanwhile, Daisy has starred as the lead in another hit book adaptation, Where the Crawdads Sing, and is set to lead the remake of the classic novel Sense and Sensibility. ‘My husband and I went to play golf on the west coast': Catherine Zeta-Jones on filming Netflix hit ‘Wednesday' in Ireland
Ahead of Wednesday season two, Catherine Zeta-Jones discusses why the series and the Addams family are so relevant, visiting her Irish roots with husband Michael Douglas and feeling blessed in midlife Lately, we have become accustomed to very open public and private conversation about the realities of midlife, and yet it still seems strange to discuss Morticia Addams in this particular bracket. That said, in the new, second season of Netflix's Wednesday, Morticia, played again by Catherine Zeta-Jones, is very much a woman navigating the recognisable rigours of midlife.

Inside Joanna Lumley's Wednesday season 2 role as Jenna Ortega link revealed
Joanna Lumley is set to star in season two of Netflix's Wednesday, but what do we know about her role in the upcoming season of the horror comedy-drama series? WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Wednesday season 2. The second series of Netflix 's horror comedy-drama Wednesday is set to welcome British icon Joanna Lumley to its cast, sparking intrigue among fans about her role in the show. Lumley, best known for her outrageous portrayal of Patsy Stone in the 90s sitcom Absolutely Fabulous alongside Jennifer Saunders, has since been involved in a variety of major projects. The former model, author and activist has featured in a number of successful films such as Paddington 2 and The Wolf of Wall Street, as well as popular UK series like Fool Me Once and Amandaland. Her next television appearance will be in the Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday, which returns for its second series on Netflix on Wednesday, August 6. Ahead of the show's return, Netflix has hinted at how the unforgettable 79 year old will make her mark in the series. Lumley will join the cast as none other than Wednesday Addams' (played by Jenna Ortega) Grandma Hester Frump. She is described as Morticia Addams' (Catherine Zeta-Jones) "formidable mother and the fabulously wealthy mogul behind Frump Mortuaries", one of the most successful outcast-owned companies in America. With this teaser in mind, it's speculated that Morticia will be clashing with her mother in the upcoming series. Netflix further describes Grandma Hester as being "immaculately coiffed, emotionally cold, and armed with a razor-sharp tongue. "Hester is calculated in everything she does, from running her empire to managing her family's legacy." A first glimpse of Lumley's Wednesday transformation has been unveiled ahead of the second series launch, and she appears as striking as ever sporting a gothic fitted black gown and theatrical upswept hairstyle. She won't be the sole new addition when the sophomore season kicks off, as Lumley will be accompanied by Thandiwe Newton portraying psychiatrist Dr Rachael Fairburn, Steve Buscemi as Principal Dort and Billie Piper taking on the role of music instructor Isadora Capri. What's particularly thrilling is that pop icon Lady Gaga is also expected to feature in Wednesday as an educator named Rosaline Rotwood, though no preview shots of the superstar have emerged as of yet.
