Shravani Mela Begins, Lakhs Of Kanwariyas Embark On 108 Km Pilgrimage
The world-renowned Shravani Mela commenced on Thursday at Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand, with lakhs of Kanwariyas thronging the sacred town to begin their month-long pilgrimage during the holy month of Sawan.
The fair was formally inaugurated at Dumma, on the Jharkhand-Bihar border, in a traditional ceremony marked by Vedic chants.
Jharkhand ministers Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Deepika Pandey Singh, and Sanjay Prasad Yadav jointly inaugurated the event.
Baba Baidyanath Dham houses Kamna Mahadev, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, making it one of the holiest Shaivite shrines. As per custom, Kanwariyas fetch holy water from the Uttarvahini Ganga in Sultanganj, Bihar, and walk 108 km barefoot to offer it at the Deoghar shrine.
This annual religious procession is considered the longest religious fair in Asia, covering a 108 km route from Sultanganj to Deoghar.
The pilgrimage, which began on Thursday, coinciding with Guru Purnima, saw thousands of Kanwariyas filling the roads chanting "Bol Bam", creating a spiritual spectacle.
The Jharkhand government has estimated that 50 to 60 lakh devotees from across India and abroad are likely to attend the fair this year.
To manage the massive footfall, the state government has made elaborate arrangements for accommodation, safety, sanitation, and information dissemination.
Tent cities equipped with essential amenities have been established at Kothiya and Baghmara along the Deoghar-Sultanganj route, providing rest areas for thousands of pilgrims.
Facilities such as bathing rooms, toilets, medical camps, and information centres have been set up at key locations across the mela zone.
The fair has adopted a digital format, allowing devotees to access real-time information through QR codes on their mobile phones. A dedicated chatbot service is also available for assistance.
Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyesh said that keeping in view the heavy influx of devotees, all VIP, VVIP, and out-of-turn darshan privileges have been suspended for the entire month of Sawan to ensure smooth crowd flow and fairness.
Additionally, touch worship of the Jyotirlinga is not permitted. Devotees can offer holy water through Argha -- a ritual vessel placed inside the temple to facilitate offerings.
To help pilgrims, shuttle services have been started for those arriving by bus. Holding points, clean drinking water, accommodation facilities, toilets, healthcare camps, and sanitation services are being closely monitored.
Officials, magistrates, and police personnel deployed in the area have been instructed to perform their duties.

Traffic diversions in Ghaziabad for Kanwar Yatra
Authorities in Ghaziabad have put extensive arrangements in place for the annual Kanwar Yatra, which will span roughly two weeks. The traffic police announced that heavy traffic vehicle (HTV) diversions will begin at 10pm on Friday and remain in effect until the morning of July 25. To manage the influx, the entry of HTVs from Delhi into Ghaziabad will be blocked at border points (SakibAli / Hindustan Times) The main Kanwar route in Ghaziabad covers 25km from Muradnagar to Tila Mor and 42.5km from the Kadrabad border to the Delhi-Ghaziabad border. An auxiliary route of 53km along the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and NH-9 will also be affected. 'Movement of HTVs will be completely restricted on all three major roads from Friday night. These vehicles will be diverted via UP-Gate to National Highway-9 and then onto the Eastern Peripheral Expressway,' said additional DCP (traffic) Sacchidanand. He added that out of 734 traffic police personnel, 612 have been deployed specifically for Kanwar Yatra duties, while the remaining will manage traffic on non-Kanwar routes. To manage the influx, the entry of HTVs from Delhi into Ghaziabad will be blocked at border points such as Loni, Tulsi Niketan, Seemapuri, and Anand Vihar. These vehicles will also be re-routed through NH-9. Officials noted that the movement of light vehicles on Kanwar routes will be fully restricted starting July 17. With the start of the Hindu calendar month of Shravana, large groups of Kanwariyas—mostly heading to Rajasthan and Haryana—have begun passing through the district. 'We've already started seeing heavy movement of Kanwariyas from Haridwar toward Meerut, and they are expected to reach Ghaziabad in a day or two. We are fully prepared,' said Sacchidanand. Special arrangements have also been made for HTVs carrying essential goods. These vehicles will be allowed to use diversion routes only between 12.30am and 3am, though their movement will also be restricted from July 17. Around 2,500 police personnel will be deployed for crowd control, along with 550 officers at the Dudheshwar Nath temple, where Kanwariyas gather to offer Ganga Jal. Officials have also installed 1,657 CCTVs along the route, all monitored through centralized control rooms. District magistrate Deepak Meena said all preparations for the yatra have been completed. 'We've deployed 108 sector magistrates to oversee conditions along the routes and ensure necessary facilities are in place,' he said. 'Meat shops along the Kanwar route will remain closed, and liquor shops will be covered with sheets. If required, we may order their complete closure as well.' He added that road repairs and the covering of electric poles with plastic sheets have also been completed to prevent accidents during the rains. District excise officer Sanjay Singh said that out of 450 liquor shops in the district, 165 located along Kanwar routes will be covered for the duration of the yatra.

Thousands of devotees in U.P. embark on Kanwar Yatra amid tight security
Uttar Pradesh was put on high alert on Friday as the Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage of devotees of Lord Shiva, commenced on the first day of the holy month of Shravan. Thousands of Kanwariyas travelled through the State to the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand to collect water from the Ganga. This year, the pilgrimage will take place till July 23. To ensure the safe and smooth conduct of the yatra, the Uttar Pradesh police have set up a dedicated control room at the headquarters of the State Director General of Police (DGP) in Lucknow to conduct real-time monitoring of the pilgrimage route. An eight-member team at the social media centre in the DGP office is working to monitor and respond to any false information that may arise during the pilgrimage. All major intersections along the pilgrimage route have been fitted with electronic signboards to facilitate the smooth movement of devotees, the police said. According to an official statement, 24x7 patrolling has been initiated at all major routes, with Quick Response Teams activated to respond to any eventualities. 'We have made all necessary facilities for devotees,' it stated. The State police have also deployed multiple companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary, Anti-Terrorist Squad, and the Rapid Action Force along the pilgrimage route. CM offers prayer Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath performed Rudrabhishek on the Gorakhnath Temple premises, 'praying for the health, happiness, prosperity, and peace of citizens across the State'.

One-way traffic begins on Prayagraj–Varanasi route for Kanwar Yatra
With the beginning of the auspicious month of Shravan and expected surge in Kanwar Yatra pilgrims, authorities have made significant traffic arrangements to ensure their safety and smooth movement. (HT photo) As part of the plan, the Prayagraj–Varanasi highway will operate as a one-way route while a route diversion for heavy vehicles comes into effect from Friday. Both the one-way system and diversions will remain in force until August 9, said officials. According to ACP (traffic) Kuldeep Singh, from July 11 to August 9, all traffic on the left lane of the Grand Trunk Road—from Jawahar Alopibagh Chungi in Prayagraj to the Bhiti border near Varanasi—will be completely restricted. 'This step has been taken to accommodate the large number of Kanwariyas expected during the yatra,' he added. Additionally, a special diversion originally planned for Monday, July 14, will now begin at 10 pm on July 12 and remain in effect until 10 pm on July 15, covering the first major Shravan Monday. As part of the safety measures, Shastri Bridge in Prayagraj will be completely closed to heavy vehicles and roadways buses for the next month. As a result, buses arriving from Varanasi will enter Prayagraj via Handia, Sahson and Phaphamau while buses from Jaunpur will follow the Phoolpur–Sahson–Phaphamau route. Likewise, goods vehicles involved in loading or unloading within city limits will use the Dhumanganj and Phaphamau corridors. Officials have also announced a strict no-entry rule for all heavy commercial vehicles during the diversion period, with exemptions only for essential services. All vehicle passes issued earlier will remain suspended until further notice. The traffic police have urged commuters to cooperate with the revised traffic plan and follow official advisories to avoid inconvenience and ensure a safe passage for Kanwar Yatra participants. Alternative routes for heavy vehicles To ease congestion and ensure smooth passage for pilgrims, heavy vehicles will be rerouted through longer but safer paths: Kanpur to Varanasi: Vehicles will be diverted via Ramadevi, George Town, Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Marg, Badarka, Achalganj, Bighapur, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, Jaunpur and finally to Varanasi. Return traffic will follow the same route. From Kaushambi: Vehicles will exit the Prayagraj bypass at the Soraon cut and proceed via Bhupia Mau (Pratapgarh), Mughra Badshahpur, and Machhlishahr. From Lucknow: Heavy commercial traffic will be routed through Rae Bareli, Salon, Pratapgarh, and Jaunpur. From Pratapgarh: Vehicles will travel via Machhlishahr and Jaunpur. From Rewa to Varanasi: The designated route runs through Mangawan, Hanumana, and Mirzapur. From Rewa to Lucknow/Kanpur: Vehicles will travel via Chitrakoot, Banda, Chaudagra, and Fatehpur. From Chitrakoot: Vehicles will pass through Rajapur, Kaushambi, and Kokhraj.
