Adolescence child star's new role in BBC drama unveiled in first-look pictures
The BBC has unveiled first-look images for Unforgivable, showcasing Anna Friel, Bobby Schofield and Anna Maxwell Martin in their latest roles.
This hard-hitting original drama comes from Time screenwriter Jimmy McGovern and delves into how grooming and sexual abuse devastates an entire family.
The preview photographs feature Emmy-winner Anna Friel as Anne, Bobby Schofield as Joe, BAFTA-winners Anna Maxwell Martin as Katherine, David Threlfall as Brian, and Adolescence actor Austin Haynes as Tom, who played Fredo in the Netflix series and has also appeared in All Creatures Great and Small.
Shot on location in Liverpool, Unforgivable follows the fictional Mitchell family as they grapple with the horrific consequences of abuse committed by one of their own.
Following his prison sentence, Joe arrives at an institution that provides accommodation and rehabilitation support upon his release, reports the Liverpool Echo.
He undergoes therapy sessions aimed at helping him understand what drove him to commit the abuse and confront the impact of his actions, with guidance from former nun Katherine.
Meanwhile, Joe's sister Anna struggles with how his crime has affected her family, including her sons Tom and Peter (Fin McParland) and her father Brian.
The BBC has revealed: "The drama examines the extensive ripple effect of abuse from multiple perspectives and how those involved can try to move forwards in the midst of the devastation."
The supporting cast features Mark Womack, Paddy Rowan and Phina Oruche.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, has given a tantalising preview of what audiences can expect from the upcoming drama, remarking: "Jimmy McGovern is one of our greatest dramatists, and a master at writing about today's world.
"His new film sensitively examines the pain of abuse and how it affects not only the victim but ripples out across the whole family. To see it brought to the screen with such a high calibre cast and creative team is further testament to the quality of Jimmy's writing."
Jimmy also expressed his excitement, stating: "I can't believe the cast and crew that have been assembled for this production. It's a challenging film, yes, but I can't wait for it to be shown."
Colin McKeown, executive producer for LA Productions, also weighed in on the project, saying: "This is a profoundly challenging and sensitive subject, tackled with intelligence and care by Jimmy McGovern. It's a privilege to be working with him again following the success of our previous collaborations on single dramas: Common, Care, Reg and Anthony."

EXCLUSIVE Crown double bill as Claire Foy goes Dutch with her long-term singer-songwriter boyfriend (well she is a fan of equal pay!)
The Crown star Claire Foy has long been vocal about sexual equality and the gender pay gap. So when she went for dinner with her long-term boyfriend, of course they split the bill between them. The actress has been dating singer-songwriter Charlie Cunningham for two years, and last week they were seen enjoying a casual dinner together outside a fishmonger's and acclaimed seafood bar in Highgate, North London. The loved-up pair, both 41, looked happy to be reunited, as Cunningham has just finished the first leg of his North American tour, and were seen holding hands and kissing during the meal. And when the time came to pay, both got out their bank cards and went Dutch on the bill – which included two glasses of rosé – before taking a romantic sunset stroll across nearby Hampstead Heath. Both were casually dressed in T-shirts, with Claire carrying a butter yellow bag. The actress hit the headlines in 2018 when she revealed she was being paid less than her co-star, Matt Smith, on The Crown – even though she was playing the young Queen Elizabeth II, around whom the whole Netflix drama was based. She later received an apology and an undisclosed amount – reported to be up to £200,000 – in back pay. 'I'd been working on that show for two years,' she later said. 'I loved everybody on it. And then I realised, there's been a big, fat, dirty secret that nobody's ever talked about.' Foy was paid a reported £29,000 per episode for the first two series of the hit drama, while Smith's higher pay for playing the Duke of Edinburgh has never been revealed. Producers justified the disparity as he was then the better-known actor because of his starring role in Doctor Who. The loved-up pair, both 41, looked happy to be reunited, as Cunningham has just finished the first leg of his North American tour The couple's careers mean that they are often apart with Cunningham is playing several dates across Europe and Canada over the next few months Smith defended his co-star's bid for parity, saying at the time: 'Claire is one of my best friends and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly and there should be equality for all.' Foy and Cunningham were first spotted together in July 2023. It is her first public relationship since her 2018 break-up with The History Boys actor Stephen Campbell Moore, the father of her daughter Ivy Rose. The couple's careers mean that they are often apart. London-born Cunningham is playing several dates across Europe and Canada over the next few months, while Foy is currently filming H Is For Hawk, a biographical drama, alongside Brendan Gleeson. She is also set to appear in an all-star adaptation of Enid Blyton's The Magic Faraway Tree and the black comedy film Savage House alongside Richard E. Grant.

New Netflix action movie branded 'tedious' by critics but fans demand sequel
Netflix's latest action blockbuster, The Old Guard 2, has shot to the top of the UK streaming charts, despite receiving a critical drubbing—and a whole lot of divided opinions online. While reviewers have slammed the sequel as 'tedious,' fans are flooding social media to demand a third film. Currently sitting at number one on Netflix UK, The Old Guard 2 has clearly found its audience. In a surprising twist, its 2020 predecessor, The Old Guard, has also surged back into popularity, claiming the number five spot on the platform—a clear sign that viewers are revisiting the original to keep up with the story. But not everyone is thrilled. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. On Reddit, viewers are hotly debating whether the sequel lives up to the first film. One disgruntled user, @acow552, didn't hold back: 'Sadly, I'm sure there will be a third. By not writing an ending to the second, they are basically holding Netflix hostage to make a third, because everyone will riot if there isn't. Personally, I hope there isn't. They shouldn't be rewarded for that piece of garbage they call a movie.' Despite the backlash, the sequel's cliffhanger ending has left many fans eager, even desperate, for more. 'I will be so upset if they do not make another one,' wrote @r/netflix. Especially after the ending of the second movie left us hanging like that. They better be giving us a third one or I will quit Netflix for good.' Others were equally frustrated by the sequel's lack of resolution, but grudgingly admitted they'd still tune in if a third instalment gets the green light. 'Yes, the sequel was absolutely terrible,' said @missbrenee. 'They could've at least wrapped it up completely or just left the first movie alone. And if there is a part three, we know we'll have to wait a year and a half for it with the way Netflix operates.' Still, not all the commentary has been negative. While critics have largely dismissed the film as underwhelming, audiences around the globe are proving otherwise with their viewing habits. Both The Old Guard and its sequel are currently in Australia's top 10, with the second film sitting firmly at number one, according to @collectionnumber7412 on Reddit. 'I don't understand where people are getting the 'bad rating' from,' they added, pointing to the movie's strong performance in international markets. There's also the undeniable curiosity factor. Whether out of genuine enjoyment or a need for closure, many fans admit that even if they hated the second film, they're still on the hook for the third. 'Everyone saying they didn't like the second one knows deep down they will watch the third one regardless,' joked @delicious-smell435, summing up the collective mood of Netflix's action-loving fanbase. The Old Guard 2 continues the story of a covert group of immortal mercenaries, led by Charlize Theron's stoic warrior, Andy. Based on the comic book series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, the original film was praised for its gritty action and fresh take on the superhero genre. The sequel, however, has struggled to strike the same chord with critics – many of whom have taken issue with its pacing and lack of character development. Yet with millions streaming it worldwide, and a fanbase loudly calling for resolution after that cliffhanger ending, it's clear that Netflix may already have its answer. More Trending Whether you loved it, hated it, or just want to see what happens next, one thing's for sure: The Old Guard saga isn't over yet. Netflix has yet to officially confirm a third film, but judging by the heated demand – and the fear of subscription cancellations – the streamer might not want to test viewers' patience much longer. Until then, fans will just have to keep refreshing their Netflix homepage and arguing on Reddit. The Old Guard 2 is now streaming on Netflix. Got a story?
