New Netflix action movie branded 'tedious' by critics but fans demand sequel
While reviewers have slammed the sequel as 'tedious,' fans are flooding social media to demand a third film.
Currently sitting at number one on Netflix UK, The Old Guard 2 has clearly found its audience.
In a surprising twist, its 2020 predecessor, The Old Guard, has also surged back into popularity, claiming the number five spot on the platform—a clear sign that viewers are revisiting the original to keep up with the story.
But not everyone is thrilled.

On Reddit, viewers are hotly debating whether the sequel lives up to the first film.
One disgruntled user, @acow552, didn't hold back: 'Sadly, I'm sure there will be a third. By not writing an ending to the second, they are basically holding Netflix hostage to make a third, because everyone will riot if there isn't. Personally, I hope there isn't. They shouldn't be rewarded for that piece of garbage they call a movie.'
Despite the backlash, the sequel's cliffhanger ending has left many fans eager, even desperate, for more.
'I will be so upset if they do not make another one,' wrote @r/netflix. Especially after the ending of the second movie left us hanging like that. They better be giving us a third one or I will quit Netflix for good.'
Others were equally frustrated by the sequel's lack of resolution, but grudgingly admitted they'd still tune in if a third instalment gets the green light.
'Yes, the sequel was absolutely terrible,' said @missbrenee. 'They could've at least wrapped it up completely or just left the first movie alone. And if there is a part three, we know we'll have to wait a year and a half for it with the way Netflix operates.'
Still, not all the commentary has been negative.
While critics have largely dismissed the film as underwhelming, audiences around the globe are proving otherwise with their viewing habits.
Both The Old Guard and its sequel are currently in Australia's top 10, with the second film sitting firmly at number one, according to @collectionnumber7412 on Reddit.
'I don't understand where people are getting the 'bad rating' from,' they added, pointing to the movie's strong performance in international markets.
There's also the undeniable curiosity factor. Whether out of genuine enjoyment or a need for closure, many fans admit that even if they hated the second film, they're still on the hook for the third.
'Everyone saying they didn't like the second one knows deep down they will watch the third one regardless,' joked @delicious-smell435, summing up the collective mood of Netflix's action-loving fanbase.
The Old Guard 2 continues the story of a covert group of immortal mercenaries, led by Charlize Theron's stoic warrior, Andy.
Based on the comic book series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, the original film was praised for its gritty action and fresh take on the superhero genre.
The sequel, however, has struggled to strike the same chord with critics – many of whom have taken issue with its pacing and lack of character development.
Yet with millions streaming it worldwide, and a fanbase loudly calling for resolution after that cliffhanger ending, it's clear that Netflix may already have its answer. More Trending
Whether you loved it, hated it, or just want to see what happens next, one thing's for sure: The Old Guard saga isn't over yet.
Netflix has yet to officially confirm a third film, but judging by the heated demand – and the fear of subscription cancellations – the streamer might not want to test viewers' patience much longer.
Until then, fans will just have to keep refreshing their Netflix homepage and arguing on Reddit.
The Old Guard 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

LIAM Payne's sister has paid an emotional tribute to the late star by visiting the site of a One Direction video. Ruth Gibbins made her way to heritage site Clevedon Pier where the group filmed the video for You & I in 2014. 7 7 7 A small plaque commemorates the recording while another remembers Liam, who died after falling from his hotel balcony in Argentina last October. Ruth shared two pictures from the location in Somerset, alongside poignant lyrics from the song which read: "I figured it out, nothing can come between you and I." Last month Ruth paid another tribute to her brother after watching his new Netflix show, Building The Band. Liam's final TV project, which sees him working as a talent show judge, features a host of music stars including Kelly Rowland and AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys. It was filmed just months before Liam fatal fall and his family was given the final sign-off on how he appeared in the show. Liam appears from episode seven, and the series will be released this Wednesday. Ruth, 33, watched Building The Band ahead of its release, and took to Instagram to share how "proud" she is of her beloved brother. She said: "I didn't know whether to share this but it felt weird when I've raved about Liam's work and achievements for the last 15 years. "I'm heartbroken he never got to see how great he is in this show. "He knew he had done a good job, we all told him this when we were at filming, but watching it back, wow! Continuing the emotional message, Ruth said: "You're a star Liam, you always were and always will be. "There are a range of emotions I felt watching this, but one of the main ones is immeasurable pride, always. "Miss you more every day." LIAM'S LAST SHOW In the trailer, Liam tells one act: 'You've got a lot of work to do vocally — I need to feel that connection between you guys.' In another scene he is seen seemingly referring to his own One Direction past when he says: 'How these bands are put together is not normal — we were not put together that way.' The show brings together 50 musicians who have to form six bands, without ever seeing each other in person. They perform in individual booths and have to pick one another based on singing ability and compatibility alone. It shares similarities to how Liam's band One Direction was formed on The X Factor in 2010. 7 7 7

Building The Band: What We Know About The Netflix Show Starring The Late Singer Liam Payne
A new Netflix show Building The Band will star the late Liam Payne, who was a guest judge on the show. One Direction star Liam tragically died in October last year age 31, when he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. At the time, Liam's family issued a statement following his death which read: 'We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we'll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.' Before he died, he filmed the competition series Building The Band, which has been dubbed a 'music experiment.' The show follows 50 singers who want to start a a band - but there's a twist. The contestants go in blind, and will discover their ideal bandmates based on what they sound like, their compatibility and their connection. However, not everyone will make the cut. The 50 contestants will be whittled down to six bands, and then one winner. As the Netflix synopsis teases, the show promises 'Plenty of drama, next level artistry and unforgettable performances.' Think of it as a mixture between Love Is Blind and The Voice. The filming for Building the Band took place in 2024, with filming wrapping in August. The three live shows were also filmed in late August at Aviva Studios in Manchester. The show's executive producer Cat Lawson said ahead of filming last year: 'Building the Band is a brave and bold undertaking for all involved as we hand over power to the singers themselves to form their own band based on chemistry first. With looks out of the equation, can they create a deeper connection with their bandmates? With limited bands, there are difficult decisions and heart-stopping moments along the way, but ultimately the outcome is truly amazing, with bands forming who in my opinion are worthy of the very biggest stage!' Liam Payne's involvement in the show was first announced last August, just two months before he died. The show has a total of ten episodes, and Liam will only appear from episode seven onwards. He is joined on the judging panel by Pussycat Dolls' Nicole Scherzinger and Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland. The show is hosted by the Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean will host. Netflix said in a press release this week that Liam's family had given their blessings for the show to go ahead. They said his family had 'reviewed the series and [was] supportive of his inclusion.' Before the show starts, the show's host AJ will share an emotional tribute to Liam on screen. 'When we came together to film Building The Band, we never imagined we'd soon be saying goodbye to our friend, Liam Payne. Liam is a guest judge in later episodes and through his presence we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice,' he says. 'It is through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family.' Tributes have also been flooding in online for Liam ahead of the show's launch. When Netflix shared the trailer on X, a fan commented: 'I'm glad it's still being released,' adding 'This way we can still see Liam's genuine love for music and helping people.' Another fan commented: 'Heartbreaking to see Liam Payne in this posted. It's going to be his final project forever. I'm going to be crying my eyes out watching this show.' The first four episodes will air on 9 July. Then, fans will have to wait a week or so for episodes 5, 6 and 7, which drop on July 16, 2025, followed by the final three episodes on July 23, 2025. Netflix quietly rolls out free upgrade for millions of users – and it cuts down on dreaded buffering

Errors and re-buffering are sadly commonplace when trying to watch movies and TV via any streaming app. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The upgrade was quietly implemented in March Credit: Alamy But Netflix says it has worked out a way to reduce re-buffering by 10 per cent. And even if you are unlucky enough to be hit by re-buffering it should drag on a little less, with a 5 per cent cut to the duration. The firm has also managed to make start play faster, as well as decrease playback errors by 3 per cent. It's all thanks to some visual improvements going on behind the scenes at Netflix. The biggest part of all this is maintaining that film grain effect you'll be familiar with from cinemas. "Camera sensor noise introduces its own characteristics, while filmmakers often add intentional grain during post-production to evoke mood or a vintage feel," Netflix explained in a blog post. However, this can be tricky to maintain when compressing big videos down so they stream faster. Netflix says the feature has been rolling out since March - and you don't need to do anything to benefit from it. It's not clear which titles have been converted in this way. However, the blog post did show examples of how it had been achieved in They Cloned Tyrone, starring John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx.
