Majority oppose the way Trump is using detention facilities: CBS poll
When asked in the survey if they 'favor or oppose the way the Trump administration is using detention facilities to hold people it may try to deport,' 42 percent said they back it, while 58 percent were against.
Republicans' 'big, beautiful bill' passed earlier this month included billions of dollars to ramp up what was already significantly increased immigration enforcement under Trump.
The administration and Florida leaders recently came together to build a detention facility on a remote site in the Everglades to hold migrants waiting on deportation.
The site, dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz,' opened earlier this month, featuring soft-sided holding units for hundreds of detainees via a partnership in which the federal government would provide funding and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) would oversee the build-outs as well as management.
Last week, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended conditions at the facility after Democrats said the detained migrants faced 'inhumane' treatment there.
'Our detention centers at the federal level are held to a higher standard than most local or state centers and even federal prisons. The standards are extremely high,' Noem said on NBC's 'Meet the Press' at the time.
In the CBS News/YouGov poll, 53 percent said 'the way Donald Trump and the Republicans are handling immigration' is 'too tough,' while 18 percent said it is 'not tough enough' and 29 percent called it 'about right.'
Majorities say the administration is deporting more people than they though they would, and also that officials are not prioritizing dangerous criminals.
The survey took place from July 16 to 18, featuring 2,343 people and a margin of error of about plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

The agency is touting $50,000 signing bonuses, student loan relief, law enforcement availability pay of 25% for Homeland Security Investigations Special Agents, "administratively uncontrollable overtime" for ICE deportation officers, and retirement benefits. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, with varying age maximums for certain positions. "Your country is calling on you to serve at ICE and defend the Homeland," Lyons said in a statement. "In the wake of the Biden administration's open border policies, the dedicated men and women of ICE now face unprecedented challenges in removing millions of criminal illegal aliens from our country. Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill, we now have funding to recruit and hire Americans who want to patriotically serve their country and protect American communities." "Under President Trump and Secretary Noem's leadership, ICE is finally empowered to do their jobs again. Join ICE today and help us defend the Homeland," he continued. The recruitment effort comes as the agency continues to amp up operations to counter illegal immigration, including deporting those with criminal convictions and charges on top of entering the country illegally. According to DHS, there's been an 830% increase in assaults on agents amid riots and protests throughout the country, including last month in the Los Angeles area. On the recruitment web page, the agency has "How dangerous is the work?" listed as a frequently asked question. "ICE law enforcement officers should expect a certain level of risk when performing their duties; however, they are expertly trained and every precaution is taken by ICE when it comes to protecting its officers' well-being," the website states.

Crockett criticizes AOC and Bernie Sanders' 'Fighting Oligarchy' tour for making it about themselves
Firebrand Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, privately trashed her far-left colleagues Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., accusing them of not being team players and going on tour simply to promote themselves. In May, as Crockett was eyeing a bid to become the senior Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, she met with fellow Democrat, Oregon Rep. Maxine Dexter. During the meeting, Crockett was asked about her relationship with Ocasio-Cortez, according to a new profile in The Atlantic. Dexter had concerns that Crockett could have conflicts with party leadership, much like Ocasio-Cortez did when she first came to Congress. The Texas lawmaker replied that, unlike AOC, she did not want to "burn it down" and that she was more committed to working to advance the Democratic Party as a whole. She pointed to AOC and Sanders' "Fighting Oligarchy Tour" as a "good idea," but one that ultimately was constructed just to boost the brands of the two lawmakers. AOC and Sanders have been crisscrossing the country on the tour, bringing their left-wing message to crowds of thousands. "[The tour] kind of makes people be like, 'Oh, it's about them, right?' Instead of the team," Crockett said. Crockett ultimately withdrew from the race for the Oversight Committee spot after comments she made regarding supporting a potential Trump impeachment sent shockwaves through swing-district Democrats. Crockett has a history of making insulting comments about Republicans and Trump. She was accused of mocking wheelchair-bound Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as "Governor Hot Wheels" in March. "We in these hot a-- Texas streets, honey. Y'all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a-- mess, honey!," she said at a March Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles. Crockett infamously got into a nasty fight with Rep.
