Anwar shrugs off Dr M's Batu Puteh dare

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has brushed aside Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call to be charged over the Batu Puteh issue.
When asked by reporters after attending the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar responded briefly: "Let it be."
Yesterday, the former prime minister rejected what he described as "immunity" granted to him over the matter, insisting that he be brought to court if any wrongdoing is found.
Dr Mahathir also took aim at Anwar, accusing him of having already "found him guilty", and challenged the government to prove any allegations in court.
Previously, Anwar said the cabinet had decided not to pursue legal action against Dr Mahathir over the Batu Puteh matter, citing his advanced age.

Anwar partly to blame for public anger: LDP

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 Text Size: David said over the past year, Anwar's government has faced widespread criticism for controversies such as the delayed appointment of the Chief Justice. Such missteps he said have eroded public trust. Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said while it does not support 'topple Anwar' movement, the Unity government must shoulder blame for failure to meet public expectations, leading to growing dissatisfaction. 'Anwar (Prime Minister) must demonstrate a firm commitment to practical reforms, rather than resorting to excessive 'performative politics' to please the public,' Vice President David Ong said in a statement. David said over the past year, Anwar's government has faced widespread criticism for controversies such as the delayed appointment of the Chief Justice. Such missteps he said have eroded public trust. 'The core responsibility of a leader is to resolve livelihood issues, not to create unnecessary political spectacles.' Regarding calls for Anwar to step down, David said it must be pursued through legitimate democratic mechanisms. 'Former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir remarked that a prime minister stepping down after losing public trust is a normal occurrence. 'However, we in LDP emphasise that Malaysia's 16th General Election is due by Feb 2028, it is better to let the people make their final judgment at the ballot box. 'We (LDP) criticise the Unity government's weak handling of economic and cost-of-living issues, noting that increased taxation, rising prices and stagnant wages have placed heavy burden on the people,' he said. David said Anwar had made repeated campaign promises to reduce fuel prices, review highway tolls and deliver justice in the Teoh Beng Hock case, but there has been little visible progress, leaving voters disappointed. He said since taking office, Anwar has shown 'more theatrics than tangible results.' 'The nation urgently needs structural reforms and pragmatic economic policies, rather than political shows and empty slogans,' he said. 'Frequent changes of leadership have not only damaged economic confidence but also caused international investors to adopt a wait-and-see attitude, leaving the country's direction increasingly unclear,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No registration for RM100 cash aid, beware of scams, warns govt

Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said the ministry has received complaints about fake links and messages claiming that registration is required to receive the cash aid. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The government has urged the public to be cautious of scams and other fraud attempts over the one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA). Speaking at an event in George Town, Penang, today, deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said the assistance does not require any application or registration whatsoever, Bernama reported. She said the amount will be credited directly into the MyKad of all Malaysians aged 18 and above starting Aug 31. 'We have received numerous inquiries about how to register for the RM100 SARA assistance. There have also been complaints about fake links and messages claiming that registration is required to receive the aid. 'These claims are false and dangerous. Do not click on any such links, they are scams. 'I want to stress that there is no need to apply or register for the RM100 cash aid, as it will be automatically credited to the recipients' MyKad,' she said. Lim, who is the MP for Tanjung, reassured the public that there is no cause for concern as everyone aged 18 and above will receive the cash aid. 'Only if they do not receive it after Aug 31 will we take further action and inform them accordingly,' she said. On July 23, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced several major initiatives by the government, including the one-off RM100 cash aid, the postponement of toll rate hikes on 10 highways, and a drop in the price of RON95 fuel to RM1.99 per litre. Lim also said the government is open to considering the inclusion of wet goods such as chicken, meat and fish under SARA. 'We continue to listen to feedback and suggestions regarding the list of items under SARA. There have been proposals to include wet items such as fish, meat and chicken. We will consider expanding the list when the time is right,' she told reporters. She said the government expanded the SARA initiative on May 1 to include household cleaning products, such as laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid. These are in addition to the existing categories covering basic food items, medicines, school supplies, and personal hygiene products. Their inclusion increased the number of product categories from 13 to 14, covering 90,000 types of goods. This decision was based on feedback received during the implementation of SARA earlier this year, she said.

Veteran journo: Actual dethroning of PMX needs greater momentum than July 26 ‘Turun Anwar' rally

STRIKE while the iron is hot. Saturday's PAS-inspired Turun Anwar (July26) rally alone – whether it attracted 300,000 as claimed by the party's mouthpiece HarakahDaily or Malaysiakini (25,000) and the police (18,000) – is insufficient to force Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to vacate his premiership. Henceforth, if the opposition is serious about forcing PMX to step down, they need 'to act quickly and in a serial manner' for 'a hot iron will not become a keris if it is truck only once'. 'They (the opposition) need to continue to build momentum from the Turun Anwar campaign especially when Anwar himself has 'challenged' them to do so,' penned veteran journalist and blogger Datuk A. Kadir Jasin in his latest Facebook post. 'He recently stated that he would not prevent any gathering or criticism of his leadership, including demands for him to resign as long as they are made democratically whether through elections or a no-confidence motion in Parliament. 'Anwar will not fall nor step down because protests are not a legal channel that can topple or force a PM to resign.' On this note, Kadir reiterated his observation that while the Turun Anwar rally alone is unlikely to dethrone PMX, a successful aftermath can rub off on MPs to vote him out. 'Only Parliament and the public vote can bring down a PM or he himself has committed a serious legal offence,' justified the former group editor-in-chief of mainstream New Straits Times. 'Not to mention Anwar who is famous for street protests since the days of the campus revolution in the 1970s. By default, he himself may even stage a counter Kekal Anwar (literally, 'Stay on Anwar') rally.' Even if advances by the opposition and civil society movements through the Turun Anwar protests is capable of forcing the government to call an early general election, detractors must openly state who they have in mind as PMX's successor if their efforts are to be successful, according to Kadir. 'They must state their PM candidate authentically and firmly,' asserted the national journalism laureate objectively even though Madani backers tend to associate him as a loyalist to twice former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is now an adviser of Perikatan Nasional (PN). On a bigger picture, Kadir opined that the economic woes that are burdening man-on-the-street Malaysians are caused by PMX's over-reliance on technocrats and corporate figures 'who are detached from the general public'. 'They're an elite focused on profit and loss, taxes and revenue,' observed Kadir who started his journalistic stint with national news agency Bernama in 1969 prior to joining the Economic Desk in 1976. 'The issue of the common people suffering is not their problem. That's the problem of politicians. For them, if they succeed in creating strong economic fundamentals and obtaining recognition from international rating agencies, their job would have been done. 'Anwar, on the other hand, suffers from a 'handicap' because he is considered to not have sufficient basic economic education (PMX is a Malay literature graduate). 'In conclusion, whoever takes over the PM's reign, the key challenge is sustainable economic management accompanied by a more equitable distribution of wealth.' – July 28, 2025
