Man dies after entering sea to rescue two children ‘in distress' at Lincolnshire beach

A man has died after entering the sea to help rescue two children.
The 60-year-old man entered the sea in Ingoldmells, in Lincolnshire, after seeing two children who appeared to be in distress, at around 4pm on Sunday.
In a statement, Lincolnshire Police said: 'A 60-year-old man has sadly died after entering the water to help two children who appeared to be in distress.
'The man reportedly entered the sea just after 4pm today (25 May) close to the Promenade in Ingoldmells, he got into difficulty and sadly died at the scene.
'Our thoughts are with the man's family and loved ones at this very sad time. '
Police released no further information about the identity of the man or the two children he was believed to have been trying to help.
Earlier that day, officials warned tourists and locals to avoid Ingoldmells promenade 'due to a serious incident within the water.
'Multiple emergency services on scene involving Police/Ambulance/HM Coastguard/RNLI & 2x Air Ambulance's on scene.'
The RNLI confirmed it had launched the Skegness lifeboat during the incident. It is understood the coastguard and air ambulance were also in attendance. The Independent has contacted Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance Service for comment.
Residents shared tributes to the 60-year-old on social media in response to news of his death.
One person posted: 'Deepest sympathies with the gentleman's loved ones. How very tragic for all involved such a heroic and selfless act to end in such a tragic and heartbreaking way.
'Also thinking of the two children and their families too what a terrifying and traumatic experience for them. Absolutely so sad to think all involved were just trying to enjoy the bank holiday weekend and now be left traumatised and a family grieving and heartbroken over losing their Brave beloved family member.'
Another added: 'Such An Heroic Act ~ with A Heartbreaking Out Come Godbless you Sir x Hope the children are safe x'.
Ingoldmells is a popular seaside destination three miles north from the resort town of Skegness.
The village is not only home to Butlins Skegness, but amusement park Fantasy Island, which is home to Europe's largest seven day market.

Floral tributes have been placed in Chalkwell Park after a child died when a tree fell. Police remain at the scene today as they continue to investigate the incident alongside forensic specialists. Shortly before 3pm on Saturday, June 28, it was reported a tree had partially collapsed in Chalkwell Park. A number of children were caught beneath the tree and suffered injuries. The park was busy with members of the public and many immediately went to their aid. Two children, girls aged seven and six, suffered serious injuries and were taken on to hospital. Sadly, the seven-year-old girl has since died in hospital. Her family are receiving support from specialist officers. The six-year-old girl remains in a critical condition. 'They showed the best of Southend today and I'm sorry this update does not bring them more positive news. 'My officers, and our partners with the ambulance and fire service, did all they could to help the two injured children. 'Today's loss is one they will all take personally."
