KUALA LUMPUR: All signs point to women's doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah renewing their contracts with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz (pic), who met Pearly-Thinaah at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday, said the pair's future in the national body will be decided before they leave for the Japan Open from July 15-20 in Tokyo.
The duo's contract with the national body expired in December and they have not signed a new deal yet but Zafrul is confident Pearly-Thinaah and BAM can come to a mutually beneficial resolution soon.
'I had a frank and positive discussion with Pearly and Thinaah. We are close to coming to a resolution that will benefit both BAM and the players before the Japan Open,' said Zafrul.
'There are still one or two details left to finalise but we have agreed to not delay this much longer.
'We appreciate their contribution to the country and they also appreciate the support that BAM give them.'
Discussions between BAM and Pearly-Thinaah had hit a stalemate after the latter could not agree terms of new deals with the national body.
Zafrul was reluctant to comment when asked if BAM would be willing to offer a more attractive package for the pair but did say that any incentives included in the new deals would likely be performance-driven.
'What is fair is we need to value them according to their contributions. If they do better, we should reward them,' said Zafrul.
'They get support from BAM and also prize money when they win but they also need some security and recognition for their achievements.
'We need to support this and I also believe in a performance-driven package. The most important thing is for them to succeed.'
Meanwhile, Zafrul also met other senior players such as world No. 2 men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 4 mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei.
'I wanted to hear any suggestions to improve BAM and help our players,' said Zafrul.
'I met several senior players as well to discuss any issues they might have. I want to continue to have open door sessions with players and next with coaches and other stakeholders as well.'

Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun eye consistency, not just titles, ahead of Japan and China Opens

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — National doubles shuttler Man Wei Chong says he and partner Tee Kai Wun are focused on giving their best rather than obsessing over titles at the Japan and China Open tournaments later this month. The 25-year-old player, who has won two titles this season, is confident that the outcomes would be good if they can maintain a high level of performance. 'We should not be overly concerned about the results. If we maintain our performance, the results will come naturally. 'I believe that is the best approach to easing the presssure on ourselves. We should be forward-looking and give it our all in the second half (of the year),' he told reporters at a training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara here yesterday. He regarded their semi-final loss at the recent Indonesia Open to homesters Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani as a valuable lesson in handling pressure from partisan fans. 'Of course, the Indonesian fans would support them. We just had to deal with the situation and hopefully, learn from it,' he added. Wei Chong-Kai Wun won the Indonesia Masters 2025 in January and the Malaysia Masters in May. Previously, national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has challenged his charges to win at least one title in the two upcoming open tournaments. The Japan Open will be held from July 15 to 20 in Tokyo, while the China Open will take place in Changzhou from July 22 to 27. — Bernama

'Iskandar can instil greater discipline in national women's team'

KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Siti Zulaikha Azmi hopes the appointment of Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin as the new national women's singles coach will instil greater discipline and character among the players. BAM yesterday confirmed that Iskandar, 33, will officially join the national coaching setup on Oct 1. Siti Zulaikha, 19, who is preparing for the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany later this month, believes Iskandar's experience as Ireland coach since 2022, will bring a positive impact. "I'm excited because he has coached abroad, so I believe there's a lot we can learn from him," said Siti Zulaikha, today. "He was excellent as a player. I'm confident he will bring a lot of experience to the table as a coach. "I hope his presence can help strengthen our discipline and build our on-court character."

'Pearly-Thinaah not distracted'

KUALA LUMPUR: As Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah's contract impasse with BAM drags on, their coach Rosman Razak is playing it cool on the sideline. The national women's doubles head coach said he will only speak up if there are any issues affecting the world No. 3 pair. "If there's a problem, I will voice it out. But so far, there are no issues. They remain focused and follow all my instructions." Though there is a cloud over their heads, Rosman said Pearly-Thinaah have not been distracted in any way and continue their training as usual. Pearly-Thinaah and BAM have not been able to come to an agreement for a new deal since their contracts expired in December last year. The duo want better terms in their contract negotiations with BAM which have dragged on for six months. There is speculation that Pearly-Thinaah would leave the national set-up and become professionals if things don't work out with BAM. In another bid to get the duo to agree to a contract extension, BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz met Pearly-Thinaah at Academy Badminton Malaysia for talks yesterday, but the meeting ended without resolution. Amid the situation, Zafrul remains optimistic that an agreement will be reached between BAM and the pair before they leave for the Japan Open, which starts on July 15. Asked how are his charges dealing with the "off the court pressure", Rosman said he only wants to focus on his "on the court" work with Pearly-Thinaah. "Oh, I don't know about that. I only speak about my part — which is training and tournaments," he said at the Academy Badminton Malaysia today.
