Scattered showers, thunderstorms roll in across South Florida

South Florida is in for another round of wet weather on Wednesday. Scattered showers and storms will move across parts of South Florida with the potential for some heavy downpours and localized flooding. The Weather Prediction Center has placed Broward, and most of Miami-Dade, under a marginal (level 1) risk of flash flooding. The National Weather Service said Miami-Dade is under a flood advisory until 11:45 a.m. It said additional rainfall amounts of 1 - 3 inches are expected which could lead to minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Areas impacted include Miami, Hialeah, Coral Gables, South Miami, Kendall, Doral, Pinecrest, Miami Springs, Sweetwater, West Miami, Medley, Westchester, Olympia Heights, Fountainbleau, University Park, University Of Miami and Miami International Airport. Highs will climb to around 90 degrees in the afternoon, however, when the humidity is factored in, it will feel like the upper 90s and low 100s in some areas. The upper-level area of low pressure that has brought the moisture and rain over the last few days will keep the chance of rain higher on Wednesday. Some lingering moisture on Thursday will lead to some passing showers and storms. However, it will be a transitional day as Saharan dust begins to move in. The Saharan dust and drier air will continue to move in on Friday and through the weekend, lowering the chance of rain. As the rain moves out, the sizzling heat returns. Highs will soar to the low 90s and it will feel like the triple-digits when you factor in the humidity on Saturday and Sunday. The National Hurricane Center is giving the trough of low pressure near the southeastern U.S. coast a 10% chance of development as it moves west-southwestward the next few days. Regardless of development, this system will bring heavy rain to Florida and then the northern Gulf coast through this weekend.

Muggy air returning to Maryland, tough heat and storms to follow

The recent stretch of comfortably warm temperatures, sunshine, lower humidity levels, and enjoyable weather is about to come to an end. Today will be the last real enjoyable weather day before heat and humidity quickly ramp up late week into the weekend. In addition to the potentially dangerous combination of high temperatures and sweltering humidity, strong to severe thunderstorms will become a growing concern Saturday and Sunday during the afternoon and evening hours. Today will be the last truly comfortable day as we are still under the protecting influence of high pressure. This will keep our skies partly cloudy and our temperatures seasonably warm. Humidity levels will start to climb this afternoon and evening as winds veer out of the southeast and south. While today will become noticeably muggy, it won't be unbearably hot, making it a good day for any outdoor activities. By Thursday, summer heat makes a full return. Expect plenty of sunshine, higher humidity, and highs around 90 degrees. Humidity levels will be moderate, so the heat won't feel that extreme. The heat intensifies Friday, with afternoon temperatures reaching the middle to upper 90s and heat index values exceeding 100. Friday has been designated a First Alert Weather Day due to the oppressive heat and humidity. An isolated or widely scattered late-day storm is also possible. The hot temperatures combined with increasing levels of sweltering humidity will make for a miserably hot and humid weekend. High temperatures will top out in the middle 90s Saturday and lower 90s Sunday. Feels like temperatures will range between 100° and 108°. Overnight lows will only dip into the upper 70s and lower 80s. Heading into the weekend, a shift in the upper-level weather pattern could bring more active conditions. As a ridge of high pressure retreats westward, the Mid-Atlantic will find itself under a northwest flow aloft. This setup allows upper-level disturbances to interact with hot and humid surface conditions, triggering showers and thunderstorms each day, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Given the abundance of heat and humidity in the atmosphere, storms will have more than enough fuel to grow into powerful clusters that pose a risk of damaging winds, hail, blinding downpours, and intense cloud to ground lightning. Our WJZ First Alert Weather Team has issued First Alert Weather Days for Saturday and Sunday for the combination of potentially dangerous heat and severe thunderstorms. Conditions are expected to dry out somewhat by Monday, offering a brief reprieve before another cold front brings renewed chances for storms by the middle of next week.

A regular summer event is missing from Sunday's metro Miami weather forecast

Daily Miami and Fort Lauderdale summer weather forecasts usually can be summed up as 'hot, rain, chewy humid, repeat.' Sunday's forecast drops one of those. The National Weather Service predicts a high of 91 degrees with a heat index of 102 degrees Sunday and Monday. That's higher than usual because the usual daily 15 to 20 minutes of warm-but-cooling rain — just long enough to play the first six songs on Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' — isn't expected to return until at least Monday in Miami, Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale. And, Miami's Monday maybe for rain is estimated at a slight 20% in the daytime, 10% at night. There's a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. So, if you're going to be outside, take some fluids with you. Check on senior citizens, especially those who might have malfunctioning fans or air conditioners in their homes. Parents, grandparents, guardians and pet parents, especially if you're altering your routine, make a habit of looking in the back seat before you lock your car with the windows raised. Many child or pet deaths from hot cars happen when the child or pet is being taken along on a common errand where they're usually not present. A disturbance in the Atlantic Sunday morning, the National Hurricane Center says environmental conditions for a tropical wave about 1,000 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles 'appear only marginally conducive for development during the next day or so while the system moves west-northwestward around 10 mph.'
