Sergio Garcia fights back over club snap controversy at The Open as he battles for Ryder Cup shot

The furious Spaniard has defended himself after the flashpoint
Sergio Garcia defended himself against club-snap rage as he fights for a Ryder Cup future.

The Spanish star lost the plot on the second tee of Sunday after sending a wild shot off target.

Garcia was furious and cracked his club into the deck. As he smashed it into the turf, the head came flying off leaving him without a big dog for the rest of the round.

But he insisted he was not being an angry man as he responded: 'To be totally honest, I didn't feel like I did that much. I didn't smack it straight down. I kind of swiped it back. I've done that 50 times and never broken a club.
'The shaft just snapped in half and I was surprised. I wasn't trying to break it. Usually, if it breaks, it breaks by the neck and it broke in the middle of the shaft.
'Maybe the shaft had a little thing there because I didn't feel like with what I did it should have broken, but that's what it was and then I got some good practice when I threw it.'

Garcia was desperate to do well to give himself a chance of making Luke Donald' s side for the clash against the United States at Bethpage in September.
His two-under finish didn't trouble the leaders, but he said: 'I don't think it's the last chance, I think there's still a good amount of weeks left. At the end of the day, I've just got to do what I can. I've got to try to play the best I can and then we'll see what happens.
'It's no secret that we have been talking. It would mean the world to me to be there. Obviously if I can help the team, that's my main goal, I've always said it. I think that I can bring things to the team.

'Obviously at the end of the day, he's going to make whatever he thinks is the best decision for him and his team.'
Garcia and Jon Rahm were strong as a pairing at Whistling Straits four years ago and he added: 'Jon and I are good friends. I was watching a few YouTube videos this week on our matches there. We had a great time. We gel nicely.

'It's still a couple months to go. I wish I could have a crystal ball and see the future, but unfortunately, I cannot.'
Garcia says his LIV status will have no bearing on the captain's decision as he said: 'That's what he's told me, it's just about how my game is and what I can bring, simple as that. We've had a few conversations.
'Going into New York, experience is always good, mostly because you're still going to have some rookies there and I think those experienced guys have a great job to do there to make sure that those rookies know what they're getting into, even though Luke has been doing a great job of bringing a lot of information to the potential players.
'When you're out there, it's nice to have one of those experienced guys to put their arm around you and make you feel like don't worry, I've got you, when people are shouting at you and screaming and wishing you all the bad things that you can think of.
'It's easy to go into a little shell and get smaller. I was very fortunate to play with Jesper [Parnevik] in 1999 as a rookie. He made it so much fun and so easy for me to really enjoy the moment and enjoy the Ryder Cup, even being away as tough as the crowds might be.'
Garcia still harbours hopes of being a future captain, but added: 'It's something that obviously would be a nice honour to have. I really don't want to think about that right now. I've got my mind on other things.'

Liverpool commission permanent Diogo Jota tribute at Anfield

Liverpool Football Club has commissioned a sculpture to be made in honour of Diogo Jota outside Anfield after thousands of floral tributes to their No.20 were gradually removed in recent days. Portugal and Liverpool forward Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who played for Portuguese second division club Penafiel, died in a car crash on 3 July in the Spanish province of Zamora. Liverpool retired Jota's number 20 shirt in tribute, across all levels of the club, including LFC Women and the Academy. The planned sculpture will be made by recycling items left outside Anfield since his death by fans paying their respects. It will become a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield. Floral tributes are to be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites, including Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and AXA Melwood Training Centre. In the meantime, a temporary area of reflection has been created at Anfield so people can continue to pay their respects. Liverpool are planning a fan mosaic and a minute's silence at the opening Premier League home game against Bournemouth on 15 August. Fans can also pay tribute at the pre-season game against Atletico Bilbao on 4 August at Anfield, while players' shirts will have a "'Diogo J 20" patch for their two pre-season games in Asia. And the Reds players will wear a specially-designed patch with 'Diogo J 20' stitched on in memory of their team-mate across the two games in the Far East, starting with AC Milan at the Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday evening (12.30pm UK time). A floral tribute will also be laid before kick-off at the pre-season games in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Anfield. The LFC Foundation has also committed to creating a grassroots football programme in the Jota's name. Meanwhile, the Football Association will hold talks with Liverpool before planning a tribute to Jota at the Community Shield at Wembley on 10 August. In addition, the club have said if supporters want to honour Jota by having "Diogo J 20" on the back of their shirts, then the profits of the purchases will go to the LFC Foundation, the club's charity.

Tiger Woods' response to 'mind-blowingly enormous' LIV Golf offer sums him up

Three years on from LIV Golf's maiden tournament in the UK, here's a look back on Tiger Woods' stance on the controversial breakaway tour, which ripped the sport in half Tiger Woods showed his true colours by snubbing an 'enormous' offer to defect to LIV Golf. Three years on from its controversial launch, the rebel tour is back in the UK, which hosted the tour's maiden tournament at the Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead. ‌ This weekend, the JCB Golf and Country Club near Uttoxeter will host LIV stars like Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson. One of the top players who declined to join LIV was Woods. ‌ Greg Norman, who was LIV's CEO in 2022, approached the sporting icon about joining the breakaway series. In addition to his 15 major titles, only surpassed by Jack Nicklaus with 18, Woods is renowned for his daring and fearless approach to the game, which has made him a fan favourite. ‌ Woods' exceptional talent inspired a generation, including making him Rory McIlroy's childhood hero, so it's no surprise that Norman wanted him at LIV. Norman, a two-time major winner himself, disclosed his offer to Woods when LIV launched three years ago. Norman described his offer to Woods as "mind-blowingly enormous." He revealed: "We're talking about high nine digits." However, Woods showed no interest in joining LIV Golf and emulating Mickelson's move. For a long time, Woods and Mickelson were the top two players in the world, holding the No.1 and No.2 positions in the rankings. Woods, when questioned about joining Mickelson at LIV, said: "He has his opinion on where he sees the game of golf going. "I have my viewpoint, how I see the game of golf. I've supported the Tour, and my foundation has run events on the Tour for a number of years. I just think that what Jack (Nicklaus) and Arnold (Palmer) have done in starting the Tour, breaking away from the PGA of America, and creating our tour in 1968... I just think there's a legacy to that." ‌ Highlighting his commitment to the PGA Tour, he added: "I've been playing out here for a couple of decades, and I think there's a legacy to it. I still think that the Tour has so much to offer, so much opportunity. "I understand different viewpoints, but I believe in legacies. I believe in major championships. I believe in big events, comparisons to historical figures of the past. There's plenty of money out here. The Tour is growing. ‌ "But it's just like any other sport. It's like tennis. You have to go out there and earn it. You've got to go out there and play for it. We have opportunity to go ahead and do it. It's just not guaranteed up front." Woods has demonstrated his commitment to the PGA Tour following LIV's inception, joining the PGA Tour's Policy Board in 2023 and playing a key role in discussions about a potential merger between the tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which bankrolls LIV. Talks over the end of golf's civil war remain deadlocked following the "framework agreement" of 2023, which was supposed to pave the way to a peace deal. However, Woods' wish for the divisive Norman to step aside was realised earlier this year.
