Bryson DeChambeau climbs into top 10 at British Open, all but locking up Ryder Cup spot

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – Bryson DeChambeau fired a final-round 64 at Royal Portrush for a remarkable comeback from his birdie-less opening round of 78. He recorded a remarkable 19 birdies over the final three days and rallied for a top-10 finish at the 2025 British Open. It all but locked up his spot on the 12-man U.S. Ryder Cup team, which will face Team Europe and attempt to win back the Cup in late September. DeChambeau, who was on the winning U.S. side in 2021 at Whistling Straits but left off the team that got routed in Rome in 2023, said he can't wait for Bethpage Back. 'I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that's going to be rooting for Team USA,' he said. DeChambeau still has some LIV Golf events ahead of the Ryder Cup, including this coming week in London, but he's already thinking about the Ryder Cup. Asked if he spent any time with U.S. Captain Keegan Bradley this week, he said, 'I talked with him briefly, and then he put something in our lockers that was pretty inspirational.' He declined to share what exactly Bradley left in his locker, but J.J. Spaun mentioned that he drew inspiration from something Bradley put in his locker at the U.S. Open. Speaking on the Subpar Podcast, Spaun said, 'Keegan put like a printed out picture of the U.S. Ryder Cup bag with my name on it — and he did it to all the other guys that could potentially make the team at Oakmont — and he put like, 'Bring you ego.' Stuck it in my locker and every time I opened my locker, I saw it. Every day. Open locker. See it there. It was just one of those things that kept kind of being pinged into my brain that was like, 'alright, Ryder Cup. Let's go. Bring your ego.' I'm not an egotistcal person, but I think that more tapped into my self-belief.' That's a tactic that Bradley, a diehard New England Patriots fans, learned from the team's former football coach, the legendary Bill Belichick. DeChambeau called what Bradley did at the British Open "personal," but added, 'It meant a lot.' The U.S. has lost eight of the last 10 Ryder Cups. 'This year's no joke,' DeChambeau said. 'We're tired of it. We're tired of losing.'

Sergio Garcia fights back over club snap controversy at The Open as he battles for Ryder Cup shot

The furious Spaniard has defended himself after the flashpoint Sergio Garcia defended himself against club-snap rage as he fights for a Ryder Cup future. ‌ The Spanish star lost the plot on the second tee of Sunday after sending a wild shot off target. ‌ Garcia was furious and cracked his club into the deck. As he smashed it into the turf, the head came flying off leaving him without a big dog for the rest of the round. ‌ But he insisted he was not being an angry man as he responded: 'To be totally honest, I didn't feel like I did that much. I didn't smack it straight down. I kind of swiped it back. I've done that 50 times and never broken a club. 'The shaft just snapped in half and I was surprised. I wasn't trying to break it. Usually, if it breaks, it breaks by the neck and it broke in the middle of the shaft. 'Maybe the shaft had a little thing there because I didn't feel like with what I did it should have broken, but that's what it was and then I got some good practice when I threw it.' ‌ Garcia was desperate to do well to give himself a chance of making Luke Donald' s side for the clash against the United States at Bethpage in September. His two-under finish didn't trouble the leaders, but he said: 'I don't think it's the last chance, I think there's still a good amount of weeks left. At the end of the day, I've just got to do what I can. I've got to try to play the best I can and then we'll see what happens. 'It's no secret that we have been talking. It would mean the world to me to be there. Obviously if I can help the team, that's my main goal, I've always said it. I think that I can bring things to the team. ‌ 'Obviously at the end of the day, he's going to make whatever he thinks is the best decision for him and his team.' Garcia and Jon Rahm were strong as a pairing at Whistling Straits four years ago and he added: 'Jon and I are good friends. I was watching a few YouTube videos this week on our matches there. We had a great time. We gel nicely. ‌ 'It's still a couple months to go. I wish I could have a crystal ball and see the future, but unfortunately, I cannot.' Garcia says his LIV status will have no bearing on the captain's decision as he said: 'That's what he's told me, it's just about how my game is and what I can bring, simple as that. We've had a few conversations. 'Going into New York, experience is always good, mostly because you're still going to have some rookies there and I think those experienced guys have a great job to do there to make sure that those rookies know what they're getting into, even though Luke has been doing a great job of bringing a lot of information to the potential players. 'When you're out there, it's nice to have one of those experienced guys to put their arm around you and make you feel like don't worry, I've got you, when people are shouting at you and screaming and wishing you all the bad things that you can think of. 'It's easy to go into a little shell and get smaller. I was very fortunate to play with Jesper [Parnevik] in 1999 as a rookie. He made it so much fun and so easy for me to really enjoy the moment and enjoy the Ryder Cup, even being away as tough as the crowds might be.' Garcia still harbours hopes of being a future captain, but added: 'It's something that obviously would be a nice honour to have. I really don't want to think about that right now. I've got my mind on other things.'

Open ace missing drug conviction caddie at Portrush

American star looking forward to being reunited with his regular sidekick Harris English admits he's missing his regular sidekick Eric Larson at The Open. ‌ The American star's caddie is absent from Royal Portrush having been refused a visa to travel from the United States due to a past drug conviction. ‌ Larson was unable to obtain the necessary clearance and legal help didn't solve the problem. Grounds for refusal include an applicant who has been convicted of a criminal offence in the UK or overseas for which they served 12 months or more in prison. ‌ Three decades ago, Larson pleaded guilty to sending cocaine to friends and spent 10 years and three months in prison. Since his release, Larson has worked at three Ryder Cups against Europe assisting Anthony Kim in 2008, Jeff Overton in 2010 and English four years ago at Whistling Straits. He has, in total, caddied for his current boss for the past eight years. ‌ However, English could not get him to the Genesis Scottish Open at The Open and said: 'I miss having him out here, disappointed he's not here, but I know he's rooting me on from Palm Beach Gardens. 'He's probably one of the most positive people I've ever been around. He's obviously been in a pretty rough spot for 10-plus years, so every day is a gift. He does not have a bad day. So that's what I love about him. I can say: Hey, we're going to go practice for 10 hours in a row, he's going to be all for it. Hey: I'm not going to practice today, I'm going to go hang out with my family, he's all for it. 'He's got my back, and he's just a great person. He's probably one of everybody's favourites out here among the players and caddies. He's just a very joyful guy. I know all the caddies and players have been asking me how he's doing. They can't believe he's not over here. Hopefully we'll get it worked out for next year.' Larson has been offering support from his base and giving out support to English, who has led at one stage on both of the opening two days at the Dunluce. He has stopped short of dishing out tips from his couch, though, as the player said: 'He's not going to do that. He knows how hard it is in the moment, and you're trying to make the best decision you can in the moment. You can't really look backwards, you should have done this, should have done that. Yeah, he's been great. I miss having him out here, but we're doing good so far. 'I'm sure he's watching every shot. He's like you're playing some of the best golf in the field. Just keep hitting fairways and greens, which is kind of my game of just keep plodding along and play a bit of chess out here. I feel like I did that for the most part. Just got to keep going. I'll have him back in Memphis.'

Former World No 1 recreates Oakmont's conditions at home as he seeks first major win in nearly a decade

It's been a while since Jason Day has been in the winner's circle of a major. His lone major victory is approaching its 10-year anniversary (Aug. 16, to be exact) when the Australian took home the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits during a run when Day was the most dominant golfer on the planet and ranked No. 1 in the world. But since then, it's been a roller coaster. He has battled numerous injuries and went winless over a five-year span. In early 2023, he was ranked 175th. Entering the U.S. Open, he ranks 39th. And while he hasn't won in nearly two years, he's been much more consistent. He just needs to shake off these injuries; he recently missed some time with a wrist issue. "[My golf game has] been good at times, I would say. But it's been choppy, because I'll be playing good and then obviously get an injury, and then I'll take a time off, and then I come back and I'll play good again, and then I get another injury. So it's just been … very, very difficult to get any sort of momentum," Day said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. "So I've played solid golf and I've had some good finishes, but I just can't believe we're halfway through the season now, and I feel like the year's gone very, very fast, but obviously, when you're injured, you're sitting out a lot and just waiting around until … your body heals. So decent golf, could play a little bit better, obviously. Everyone can do that." This weekend's U.S. Open will be the first time he's out on the course since last month's PGA Championship as he nursed the aforementioned wrist injury. But he might be more prepared for the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, than anyone else. Day, thanks to his partnership with TruGreen, was able to recently build his front lawn into Oakmont conditions: fast green, thick rough, all the fun stuff that any U.S. Open holds. "I do have a golf course in my front yard, and I know how important it is to have the correct people in place to be able to make that happen. I'm preparing for the U.S. Open coming up, and we're doing everything we can to mimic the conditions that we have at the U.S. Open," Day said. "TruGreen handles that, and it's nice to be able drive past and go, 'Man, that lawn looks really nice.' It's that time of year when things are heating up, and when we get to the meat of the summer, things will dry out, so you need a team behind you to keep things looking mint." "If you're on a simulator, and you're playing Oakmont, you can see what the course is going to give you. But here, I can grow the course, I can speed the greens, I can grow the rough, I can firm my course out," Day added. While Day may be out of that No. 1 contention, a victory on Sunday may just put him back on that path that he's been dying for. "Being No. 1 in the world, I knew how hard it was to get there, the work and effort and distractions that came with it. It's hard to sit there and say injuries have taken me out of some momentum," Day said. "But a career is very long. I'm trying to get these recent injuries behind me, and if I can have some healthy years and hit the ball hard, focus on what I need to do, hopefully I'll give myself a chance to challenge some of the best in the world."
