Two other shows picked up two wins each in voting by Critics Choice Association members. Netflix's docuseries Love on the Spectrum won for Best Unstructured Reality Series and Best Relationship Show, while ABC's Dancing With the Stars won for Best Competition Series: Talent/Variety and DWTS' contestant last season, Olympic gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik, was awarded Male Star of the Year.
Dr. Sandra Lee, from Lifetime's Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out, won the Female Star of the Year.Both Star of the Year categories were voted on by fans.
Other notable winners included a tie in the Best Structured Series race between Nat Geo's No Taste Like Home with Antoni Porowski and Netflix's Queer Eye. Netflix's The Great British Baking Show won Best Culinary Show, giving the streamer a leading four wins among all platforms. Peacock and ABC had three wins apiece.

5 new to Netflix movies with 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix has confirmed its slate for July 2025, and I'm picking out the top new additions that scored highly on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. This month's newcomers include a stirring romantic drama starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga; you can probably guess it from that vague description. Plus, there's also a pair of 'Mission: Impossible' movies that see Tom Cruise in full flow performing death-defying stunts and saving the world even when the odds are seriously stacked against him. If you're planning a Netflix movie marathon this weekend, these movies all make for excellent choices. So, here's the best new to Netflix movies according to Rotten Tomatoes. 'A Star is Born' (2018) 'A Star is Born' became a major cultural phenomenon in 2018, and even all these years later, you're never far from hearing its enduring original song 'Shallow' played in a bar or grocery store. Starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, it's the third remake of the 1937 original, but it certainly doesn't feel derivative, with a fantastic cast, smart direction from Cooper and a soundtrack that you'll be playing on repeat for weeks after watching. Ally (Gaga) is a waitress and hopeful musician who meets Jackson Maine (Cooper), an alcoholic country rockstar whose star is fading fast. Their chance encounter in a dive bar leads to an intense romance, but as Ally's fame rapidly rises, Jackson struggles to battle his own demons. Triumphant in parts, but also deeply tragic, 'A Star is Born' is a mesmerizing romantic drama with award-caliber performances from Gaga, Cooper and Sam Elliott. Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%Watch on Netflix now 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' (2011) Netflix has added the first five 'Mission: Impossible' movies this month, and it won't come as a surprise to franchise fans that 'Ghost Protocol' has made this list. The fourth installment, 'Ghost Protocol,' took the series to a new level and set the standard that subsequent sequels would look to match. Even if follow-ups 'Rogue Nation' and 'Fallout' surpassed it, in my opinion at least, this entry still offers some jaw-dropping set pieces, including a sequence that sees superspy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) scale the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai. In 'Ghost Protocol,' the IMF (Impossible Missions Force) is blamed for a devastating terrorist attack on the Kremlin. Disavowed by the U.S. government, and with the eponymous protocol activated, it's up to Hunt and his team (Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton) to discover the true culprits, clear their names, and save the world from a nuclear threat. Rotten Tomatoes score: 94%Watch on Netflix now 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' (2015) Successfully following up a rip-roaring action blockbuster like 'Ghost Protocol' seemed a tall order, but credit to the creatives behind 'Mission: Impossible' because they did just that in 'Rogue Nation.' This sequel offers up more thrilling spy set pieces, and the section set in a Viennese opera house is among my favorite moments in the whole franchise. Plus, 'Rogue Nation' adds Rebecca Ferguson to the cast, which is always a win. 'Rogue Nation' sees the IMF disbanded, with the team's unconventional methods questioned by CIA director Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin). But in the shadows, a clandestine organization known only as the Syndicate is working to install a new world order, and Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must reunite with this team to locate this sinister new threat. In short, 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' is one of the best action blockbusters of the past decade. Rotten Tomatoes score: 94%Watch on Netflix now 'Captain Philips' (2013) Tom Hanks gives one of his most powerful performances in this intense thriller from director Paul Greengrass. Inspired by true events, it sees Hanks play the titular Richard Philips, a merchant mariner who is at the helm of a container vessel when it's hijacked by Somali pirates, led by the desperate Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Philips' priority is keeping his crew safe from harm, but as the situation escalates, the pirates become more desperate. Even if you've never seen 'Captain Phillips,' you've probably encountered the 'I'm the captain now' meme, but this gritty thrill ride is so much more than a frequently shared online clip; it's gripping from the get-go, and Hanks' performance will have you enthralled. Gritty, grounded, and surprisingly multi-layered, 'Captain Phillips' is a masterclass in building tension. As the hostage situation develops, things reach a dramatic climax that you won't soon forget. Rotten Tomatoes score: 93%Watch on Netflix now 'Tangerine' (2015) Before Sean Baker became the toast of Hollywood, winning Best Picture and Best Director at the 2024 Oscars for his latest project, 'Anora,' he helmed an equally unflinching portrayal of the sex work industry, 'Tangerine.' In fact, this 2015 movie is an even more uncompromising exploration of the sex work industry. It focuses on a side of Los Angeles that strips away the glitz and glamour and instead presents something that feels undeniably real and raw. Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez), is a transgender sex worker who's just got out of jail and learns from a close friend, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), that her boyfriend/pimp has been cheating her on while she was locked up. Determined to locate her boyfriend Chester (James Ransone), Sin-Dee and Alexandra search the city on Christmas Eve on a mission to settle the score. Netflix's new political thriller series looks more intense than I expected — here's the first trailer

Netflix has just dropped the first trailer for 'Hostage,' its upcoming political thriller series landing on August 21, and it adds new weight to what was already shaping up to be an intriguing watch. A few weeks back, I wrote about the first-look images and said it looks like a compelling binge watch, and now, with the trailer in hand, that impression only deepens. Created by Matt Charman (the mind behind 'Bridge of Spies' and 'Treason'), the limited series stars Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy as two world leaders caught in the middle of a high-stakes crisis during a global summit. One moment, they're preparing for diplomacy; the next, they're forced into a deadly game of control and survival. It's tense stuff. The trailer opens with a personal crisis at the heart of a political storm: the British Prime Minister's husband has been kidnapped, and things escalate quickly from there. Suranne Jones (who also executive produces) plays PM Abigail Dalton, shown grappling with the weight of national duty while her personal life unravels. We see flashes of mounting pressure, coded threats and tense stand-offs as a visiting French President becomes the target of a separate blackmail plot. The two leaders are thrust into a serious rivalry, each forced to make impossible decisions. Whether the two women can trust each other or whether they're being played against one another remains the central question. By the end of this short teaser, Jones's character delivers a steely statement of intent: 'They have weaponized my family. I will not be threatened. I will not negotiate. My loyalties are to this country, I will not allow it to be held to ransom.' Safe to say, she's not here to play games. Rather than going for explosive action, 'Hostage' appears to favor slow-burning psychological tension. If you're into character-driven thrillers that take their time, 'Hostage' might just be one to watch when it premieres in August. What to expect from 'Hostage' on Netflix While the trailer sets the mood with its clipped dialogue and cold tension, 'Hostage' looks set to dig even deeper into the emotional and political fallout of a crisis at the highest level. Netflix said to expect a 'political thriller with a captivating performance from Jones at its center.' Jones told Netflix: 'I'm thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I'm really proud of. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time. We'd talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. 'Hostage' was perfect — me and Matt together, backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.' Charman also said, 'I've been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she's done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she's fierce, ruthless, and you can't take your eyes off of her.' Behind the scenes, the creative team brings a sterling pedigree. Backed by Charman's writing and the directorial vision of Isabelle Sieb and Amy Neil, 'Hostage' is likely to channel the same high-gloss tension seen in 'Treason' and 'Vigil.' The supporting cast is strong too, with actors like Corey Mylchreest and Lucian Msamati expected to add some juicy drama. Filmed across the U.K. and France, the series already feels stylistically self-assured. With only five episodes, this definitely feels like a thriller most viewers will eat up once it lands (including me). Political thrillers usually aren't my first choice, but 'Hostage' has definitely caught my attention. A big part of that is the cast, but also how the story doesn't focus on being explosive or full of unnecessary action. Now, having seen the first trailer, I'm even more hyped. I'm also confident this thriller will deliver because Suranne Jones is at the center of it. With her proven track record in gripping dramas like 'Doctor Foster' and 'Gentlemen Jack,' she brings enough intensity to elevate any story. Having her both star and executive produce gives me faith that this series has been crafted with care. Reminder: you can stream all five episodes of 'Hostage' on Netflix starting August 21, 2025. Here's what I'm thinking after processing all the new footage (which I've shared again, for convenience). - This final fight's going to be bigger than ever. With the military presence on site and all those scenes of our gang tooled up and ready for battle, this next season feels way more dangerous. - Max's fate hangs in the balance - Max has already been through the wringer in "Stranger Things" so far, and it looks like that's not about to change. Her last encounter with Vecna left her with broken bones, blinded, and in a coma, and now Lucas is trying to smuggle her out of a facility while being pursued by Demodogs in a scene that screams that "Jurassic Park" scene to me. Can they bring her back? - Vecna looks more powerful than ever... but so does Eleven. Sure, Jamie Campbell Bower's big bad looks even more menacing in the trailer's final moments, but Eleven's gotten stronger, too: she can even fly now. This power creep has me hyped for the final face-off, for sure. And finally, a prediction: with all these shocked and panicked faces and all the danger on display, I'm expecting tragedy to strike and potentially to lose more than one of our major party members. And with that, we can look forward to the show's release (and maybe more info!) later this year. It looks like one hell of a send-off. 'Stranger Things' isn't technically over after season 5 Even though season 5 signals the end of 'Stranger Things' as we know it, we're not entirely leaving Hawkins, Indiana behind. How? Well, as Tudum puts it, 'Saturday morning cartoons are getting turned Upside Down.' Yes, we're getting a 'Stranger Things' animated series at Netflix, and the title was revealed back in April 2025: 'Stranger Things: Tales From '85.' We've always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling," the Duffer Brothers told Tudum. When is 'Stranger Things' season 5 premiering? Mark your calendars: This holiday season, Netflix is serving Demogorgons with the turkey. 'Stranger Things 5' is dropping in three parts, all on or close to big holidays later this year. Volume 1 arrives November 26 (the day before Thanksgiving) with four episodes. Volume 2 drops on Christmas Day with three episodes. Talk about a gift! And Volume 3, the final episode, lands December 31 and is sure you scream in the New Year.
