
Emirates officially resumes flights to Damascus
DUBAI (WAM) Emirates has officially resumed operations to the Syrian capital, Damascus, marking the return of the 'City of Jasmine' to its Middle East network.The airline's comeback reconnects travellers to Syria and onwards across six continents.Flight EK913 landed at Damascus International Airport at 14:30 with 286 passengers onboard and was welcomed with a water cannon salute.Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, headed the UAE delegation along with Emirates executives who were onboard the flight and led the ceremony upon arrival, including Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer; Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, Divisional Senior Vice President International Affairs; Adil Al Ghaith, Senior Vice President Commercial Operations (Centre); Sami Aqil, Senior Vice President – Emirates Airport Services Outstation and Business Support; Nick Moore, Senior Vice President, Passenger and Hub operations and Ahmad Al Khamis – Vice President, Aeropolitical Affairs.The delegation also included Omar Bin Ghaleb, Deputy Director-General, UAE General Civil Aviation Authority; Obaid Saif Mohammed Alnuaimi, Executive Director Aviation Security and Accident Investigation Sector, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority; Hamad Ibrahim Essa Taher, Head of Aviation Security, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority; and Ahmed Saqer Al Marri, Dubai Group Security, Dubai Police; in addition to UAE media and other distinguished guests.The first flight was welcomed by a VIP delegation including Hasan Ahmed Al Shehhi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Syria; Amjad Nakhal, Director of the Chairman's Office, General Authority of Civil Aviation; Anis Fallouh, Director of Damascus International Airport; Colonel Omar Abdel Baqi, Head of Security, Damascus International Airport and Alaa Sallal, Director of PR, General Authority of Civil Aviation; in the presence of other representatives of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Damascus International Airport, as well as media.Adil Al Ghaith said, 'Today marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the return of Emirates to Damascus. By connecting Syria to nearly 150 destinations, we aim to facilitate tourism, trade and investment, and support the country's recovery. The UAE and Syria share historic ties, and we thank the authorities on both sides for their cooperation in resuming services.'To commemorate the relaunch, Emirates leadership and Syrian officials held a cake-cutting and gift exchange ceremony.Director of Public Relations at Syria's General Authority of Civil Aviation, Alaa Sallal, added, 'Through high-level coordination and shared vision, teams from Syria and the UAE met all requirements to resume air operations, reflecting the strength of bilateral ties and economic cooperation.'Emirates will initially operate three weekly flights to Damascus on Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday, increasing to four weekly from August 2 and to daily flights from October 26. Customers will also benefit from Emirates' codeshare with flydubai for added connectivity.The airline first launched services to Damascus in 1988, and before suspending operations in 2012 had transported over 2.1 million passengers.
Emirates currently operates 194 weekly flights to 14 cities in the Middle East and GCC.

Saudi investment delegation signs $6.4bn in deals during Syria visit

Khalid Al-Falih, has concluded a multi-day visit to Syria aimed at strengthening economic ties and driving long-term cooperation across key sectors. The visit, which included a series of meetings with Syrian officials, culminated in the Syrian-Saudi Investment Forum, held under the patronage of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. Several ministers and senior officials from both nations participated in the event. During the forum, 47 Saudi-Syrian investment agreements were signed, with a total value of nearly $6.4bn (SAR24bn). The deals span a wide array of sectors, including real estate, infrastructure, finance, communications and IT, energy, industry, tourism, trade, investment, and healthcare. On the sidelines of the forum, a ministerial session brought together Eng. Al-Falih, Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry Dr. Mohammad Nidal Al-Shaar, Minister of Tourism Mazen Al-Salhani, and Saudi-Syrian Business Council and ACWA Power chairman Mohammad Abunayyan. Minister Al-Falih also met with various Syrian ministers to explore additional avenues of cooperation supporting comprehensive development. Al-Falih laid the foundation stone for the Al-Fayhaa Cement Factory, a project worth approximately $27m (SAR100m), which will have an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes. Another major development is the Al-Jawhara Commercial Tower in Damascus, a Saudi-Syrian initiative with a built-up area of 25,000 square meters and an estimated investment of over $100m (SAR375m). The mixed-use tower will feature office spaces, retail outlets, and hotel units, further contributing to Syria's urban and economic redevelopment.

Over AED 774 bn in bank investments in UAE by end of April 2025
Investments by banks operating in the UAE continued their upward trend, reaching AED 774.3 billion by the end of April 2025. This marks a 16.2% annual increase compared to April 2024 and a 1.4% rise from March 2025. According to banking indicators released by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), investments in debt securities grew to AED 352.4 billion by the end of April. Meanwhile, securities held to maturity totalled AED 345.8 billion. Banks also invested AED 19.3 billion in stocks and AED 56.8 billion in other investment instruments. Total bank credit rose to over AED 2.259 trillion, reflecting an annual growth of 9.5%. Of this, domestic credit accounted for approximately AED 1.881 trillion, while foreign credit reached AED 378.3 billion. Bank deposits exceeded AED 2.965 trillion, comprising AED 2.689 trillion in resident deposits, AED 275.6 billion in non-resident deposits. A breakdown of investments by emirate noted that Abu Dhabi banks took the lead with AED 408.9 billion, followed by Dubai with AED 296 billion, and other emirates at AED 69.5 billion.
