European space ambitions need Gulf partners

I f Europe wants to stand on its own two feet, it must look up – literally. Space, once associated only with exploration – or, more cynically – national vanity projects, has become crucial to the economic health, security, and soft power of any government, national or regional.
That's one reason why Josef Aschbacher, head of the European Space Agency, has called for more investment in the sector. Europe, he argues, cannot afford to lag behind. The ambition to be 'strategically autonomous' and shape its own future depends on catching up in an area where other powers, the U.S. and China most notably, are pulling ahead.
Space technology, it's crucial to note, is not just about satellites and rockets even though culturally, that's often what comes to mind when people think about it. This perception has been strengthened by Elon Musk's SpaceX, which communicates aggressively around its many launches.
Space in fact touches everything from military equipment and weapons to communications infrastructure to environmental monitoring and supply chain efficiency. A recent study published by the World Economic Forum and McKinsey underscored how 'space-based technologies are revolutionising the supply chain, transportation, and mobility sectors, positioning them as the fastest-growing segment of the global space economy.' In these areas, Europe has some of the world's best engineers. But it consistently fails to support the companies where they work with meaningful investment.
Compare this situation with that of the Middle East. The Gulf region has become a surprising contender in the new space race. The UAE and Saudi Arabia, once absent from this arena, are now outspending many of their Western counterparts and making rapid progress.
In just over a decade, they have poured $25 billion into the field, and that is expected to grow to $75 billion by 2032. First, national security remains essential. Secondly, they need to plan for the post-oil era. The Gulf economies rely heavily on oil, and they will be in deep trouble if they do not diversify their economies. Thirdly, they need to prepare the labour market for the twin challenges of automation and climate change. They are also closely aligned with strategic initiatives: AI, autonomous systems.
Space covers all of these. It promises robust security, long-time prosperity, and future-proof jobs, as well as national prestige and the tools to adapt to an uncertain world. But the Middle East and Europe need not see themselves as rivals. The Gulf states are actively looking for partners; they want to develop their space infrastructure further. They are becoming global hubs of innovation. And Europe, with its highly skilled, highly educated workforce and depth in advanced technology, should be an obvious ally in this undertaking. A paradigm shift is underway: those countries that fail to see how much more the Middle East is than a source of capital will fall far behind.
Europe would benefit from the support. It has many promising space companies developing world-beating dual-use technologies. With more funding and backing, they could scale rapidly: ICEYE, one of Europe's most exciting space companies, has benefitted hugely from its presence in the Gulf. Growing fast would stop lesser companies in other nations from appearing, gaining more funding, and out-scaling them.
In the United States, small, innovative companies have long been seen as the key to remaining at the forefront of innovation, and those companies receive generous funding for that reason. In Europe, procurement processes badly need rethinking, and there is still some hesitation around investing in defence, which often overlaps with space.
There was a time when the Middle East was viewed (wrongly, even then) as a source of oil money and little else. That has changed: it is now widely viewed as a genuine industrial power, as well as a large and growing market and a vital bridge and trading point between East and West. If Europe were to collaborate with the United Arab Emirates, it could get much more than funding.
The Gulf is vast, with open landscapes and a climate perfectly suited for the testing of advanced, satellite-based tech. Europe is densely packed and its regulations are stringent. The Gulf, for its part, would gain European know-how, which would accelerate its development in space. Jobs, knowledge transfer and commercial opportunities would also follow. So a strong Europe–Middle East alliance in space would serve both sides: creating economic opportunities, reducing dependency on unpredictable allies, and developing infrastructure that will define the next century. It's a win-win.
The Middle East is ready and waiting. It has shown that it's looking ahead to the future, and it is eager to join hands with countries and regions for mutual advantage: the slew of multibillion-dollar U.S. tech deals struck by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar shows that. Europe, which for a long time has relied on others, and has been able to invest in its social infrastructure due to the promise of U.S. military support, badly needs to work with other countries to ensure its security and the quality of life of its citizens. It should act now. The clock is ticking.

In an interview with Reuters after the summit, Rutte said he had used the word "daddy" to describe how some allies seem to view the United States, rather than about Trump specifically. "In Europe, I hear sometimes countries saying, 'Hey, Mark, will the US stay with us?' And I said that sounds a little bit like a small child asking his daddy, 'Hey, are you still staying with the family?'" Rutte said. "So in that sense, I used daddy, (it's) not that I was calling President Trump daddy." Asked if this meant other NATO members were like children who were now growing up after a pledge to spend more on defence, Rutte said they "already have grown up" but realised they had to step up and "equalise" defence spending with the US.

Kenya Dominates East Africa–Europe Trade Surge

Trade between the European Union and the East African Community reached €7.7 billion in 2024, marking a robust surge in economic engagement. Data from the EAC Secretariat and the European Commission reveal that Kenya led this growth, accounting for 43 per cent of total EAC trade with Europe. Kenya's ascent to prominence has been propelled by its position as the region's primary link to European markets. Under the Economic Partnership Agreement initiated in July 2024, it became the first EAC member to implement the pact, which offers immediate tariff- and quota-free access for its exports into the EU, while Kenya gradually opens its market. The results are distinctly visible: Kenya accounts for nearly half of all EAC–EU trade and for 45 per cent of investments within the bloc. An analysis of trade flows underlines the shift. In 2023, Kenyan exports to Europe—including cut flowers, fruits and vegetables—totalled €1.2 billion, while EU exports of mineral and chemical products, machinery and appliances to Kenya reached €1.7 billion. This balance reflects the mutual benefits of the agreement and deepening bilateral ties. Kenya ranks as the EU's seventh‑largest African trade partner, with total trade climbing to €3 billion in 2023, a 16 per cent rise since 2018. ADVERTISEMENT Beyond Kenya, the broader EAC has also seen shifts. Collective trade grew 28.4 per cent to $8.86 billion, driven largely by the Kenya–EU EPA. Within the EAC, intra-bloc trade also grew by 13.1 per cent to $12.1 billion in 2023, representing 15 per cent of total EAC trade. Country-specific performance underscores varying trajectories. Uganda registered a remarkable 77 per cent surge in exports to global markets, reaching $6.34 billion in 2023. Tanzania and Rwanda, while showing moderate gains, still lagged behind Kenya's growth pattern. Burundi, South Sudan and Rwanda, classified as Least Developed Countries, continue to rely on the EU's Everything-but-Arms scheme, which offers duty-free entry for all goods except arms. The EPA's emphasis on sustainability and inclusivity adds a strategic layer to the agreement. It includes clauses on environmental conservation, labour rights and gender equality—portions unprecedented in prior EU agreements with developing economies. EU officials have indicated that Kenya's stability and regional influence underpinned its leading role in the EPA, which is intended to serve as a model for other EAC members. Trade analysts suggest that Kenya's rise reflects both domestic reforms and stronger supply-chain integration. Kenyan firms have adapted to the EAC's Common External Tariff and aligned export capacities with EU demand, particularly in horticulture and floriculture. According to agricultural sector experts, Kenyan producers have expanded certification and quality compliance to meet EU standards, enabling higher-priced access to premium markets. Nonetheless, challenges persist. Kenya continues to record a trade deficit with the EU—approximately €500 million in 2023—raising concerns about long-term sustainability. While exports of flowers, tea and vegetables are strong, reliance on imports of machinery and chemicals remains substantial. Furthermore, other EAC partners have yet to ratify the EPA, delaying full regional integration under the agreement. Policy experts argue that widening Kenya's success across the EAC will require infrastructure upgrades, logistical harmonisation and expanded value‑addition processes. They caution that without broader regional participation, Kenya could be left exposed to external market volatility and uneven benefits. European trade officials maintain that the Kenya–EAC partnership is central to the EU's Africa policy, dovetailing with commitments on democratic governance and green growth. The EU‑Kenya EPA, integrated into a broader strategic dialogue launched in June 2021, represents the most ambitious EU trade pact with a developing country to date. Kenya's achievement as the dominant node of East African trade with Europe reflects a blend of diplomatic foresight, institutional readiness and export agility. As the agreement matures and other EAC nations contemplate accession, the potential for a reconfigured regional economic landscape grows—but so do the complexities of harmonising economic strategies across six sovereign states.

UAE's artificial intelligence firm G42 and Saudi Arabia's Diriyah have been named in the world's 100 most influential companies for 2025 by TIME magazine. G42 G42 is a privately owned company, in which the Mubadala Investment Company, Silverlake, Microsoft and The Dalio Family Office have invested. In 2024, G42 received a $1.5 billion investment from Micrsoft to advance its international expansion and solidify UAE's position as a global technology hub. The partnership also included a one-billion-dollar fund to support developers. Last month, G42 announced a partnership with OpenAI, Oracle, and Nvidia to boost the AI sector in the UAE. As part of the partnership, the companies will launch Stargate UAE. The AI firm has launched a new unit G42 Europe and the UK and partnered with France' Mistral AI. G42 is planning to invest one-billion dollars in Kenya's digital ecosystem. Diriyah Diriyah is part of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) portfolio. The company is building a $63.2 billion mixed-use development, Diriyah, near Riyadh. The development is expected to host over 100,000 residents, workers, students and visitors. Diriyah will also feature a wide range of cultural, entertainment, educational, hospitality, retail, and residential spaces. Diriyah promises carbon-free construction, energy efficiency, water conservation, cultural preservation, and human-centric development.
