Livermore teen arrested for possessing 258 lbs of fireworks: sheriff

Yahoo29-05-2025
(KRON) — A 19-year-old Livermore resident was arrested on May 21 for the possession of illegal fireworks, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) announced on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as Juan Carlos Cruz Jr., had 258 pounds of illegal fireworks.
Investigators were monitoring social media for any signs of illegal activity related to fireworks. They later found Cruz was also in possession of a 'controlled substance with the intent to sell and ammunition.'
According to the Livermore Fire Department, all fireworks — including 'safe and sane' — are illegal in the city and unincorporated Alameda County.
'The use of illegal fireworks presents a significant danger to public safety, posing serious risks of injury and fire,' ACSO wrote.
Photos of the items seized by ACSO that were allegedly in Cruz's possession can be viewed below.

'The Alameda County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that all fireworks, including those labeled 'safe and sane,' are illegal in Unincorporated Alameda County. We urge community members to prioritize safety and celebrate responsibly. Protecting the wellbeing of our residents remains our top priority,' ACSO wrote.

West Coast's Jack Graham banned over homophobic slur

West Coast player Jack Graham has been suspended by the AFL for four matches for using a homophobic slur against an opponent. The AFL announced the ban on Sunday after finding Graham guilty of conduct unbecoming over the incident during the July 4 match won by GWS at Optus Stadium. It said the incident was self-reported by Graham to his club, who reported it to the AFL on Friday morning, prompting an AFL integrity unit investigation. "Graham used a highly offensive homophobic slur against a GWS Giants opponent, which demeans and denigrates persons regardless of their sexuality," the AFL said in a statement. It said it took into account Graham's self-reporting of the incident, along with his private apology and contrition. Graham also rang the AFL CEO directly to apologise. A two-time premiership player with Richmond before joining the Eagles, 27-year-old Graham will not be eligible to play for West Coast for the next four weeks and he will undertake Pride in Sport education. "I am very remorseful for the word I used and know such language has no place in our community or our game," Graham said in a club statement. "I have offered my unreserved apology to the Giants player and Greater Western Sydney and would also like to publicly apologise for my comment. "What I said does not reflect my values or our club values. I made a mistake and need to be better and will prove that through my actions going forward." West Coast CEO Don Pyke said Graham had been honest in addressing the matter and understood its harmful effects. "Player welfare was front of mind throughout the process and we were in regular contact with the Giants following the match and earlier this week around this situation," he added. "With no match day report being lodged, both clubs agreed the appropriate course of action was to refer the matter to the AFL." AFL head of integrity and security Tony Keane said: "The AFL is very clear that homophobia has no place in our game, nor in the community. "We have come a long way as a code, but this incident demonstrates there is so much more to be done, and we will continue to work together to improve our game as a safe and inclusive environment for all. "Graham's sanction would have been higher if he hadn't self-reported and understood his comment was totally inappropriate."

Auburn basketball star Tahaad Pettiford jailed on DUI charge in Alabama

College basketball star Tahaad Pettiford was jailed in Alabama in the early-morning hours on Saturday, jail records showed. The Auburn basketball guard was eventually released from custody on the same day, ESPN reported. As of Saturday afternoon, Pettiford's name was no longer on the list of inmates on the jail's log. Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl acknowledged the serious nature of Pettiford's circumstances. "We are aware of the situation, and we will handle it internally with Tahaad and his family," Pearl said in a statement to ESPN. "We take these matters seriously and will learn and grow from it moving forward." Pettiford's legal troubles came shortly after he decided to withdraw his name from the NBA Draft. The 19-year-old guard averaged 11.6 points per game during his productive freshman season. Pettiford said he had reached the decision to return to the college basketball ranks because it presented a more ideal situation for him at the time. "I was happy to go through the process, getting feedback from NBA teams," Pettiford told ESPN shortly after he withdrew from the draft. "Going back to Auburn is a better situation for me. I see myself being a higher pick next year. It wasn't 100% this year, so I didn't want to take that chance." Pettiford was a key part of the Tigers team that earned the top overall seed in this year's NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Auburn's March Madness run ended when they suffered a 79-73 loss to their SEC rival Florida in the Final Four. Pettiford averaged 15.2 points per game during the NCAA tournament. He is largely viewed as the program's next bedrock player of the Tigers' next chapter after Johni Broome, the SEC Player of the Year for 2024-25, made the jump to the NBA. The Philadelphia 76ers selected Broome in the second round of last month's draft. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Auburn G Tahaad Pettiford facing DUI charge

Auburn guard Tahaad Pettiford was arrested Friday night on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police records in Lee County, Ala. Pettiford, 19, is under the legal drinking age so any blood-alcohol level greater than 0.02 percent is considered illegal in Alabama. His BAC was not reported. He posted a bond of $1,000. "We are aware of the situation, and we will handle internally with Tahaad and his family," Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement Saturday morning, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. "We take these matters seriously and will learn and grow from it moving forward." A blue-chip recruit from Jersey City, N.J., and a freshman sixth man on the Tigers' Final Four team last season, Pettiford averaged 11.6 points, 3.0 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 22.9 minutes in 38 games (one start). He made the Southeastern Conference's All-Freshman team and earned a spot on the NCAA Tournament's All-Region team after averaging 15.2 points in five tourney games. He was held to seven points on 1-of-6 shooting in Auburn's loss to eventual champion Florida in the Final Four. Pettiford tested the NBA draft waters after the season and participated in the NBA Combine in Chicago, where his 42-inch vertical leap was the second-best at the event. According to CBS Sports, he returned to Auburn for his sophomore year with an NIL package believed to be worth more than $2 million. Pettiford was a five-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, ranked No. 29 nationally and No. 2 among point guards by the 247Sports composite. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved
