A former elementary school teacher in Anderson County, S.C., was arrested and charged after being accused of having "an inappropriate and unlawful relationship with a 14-year-old male," police have said Nicole Ballew Callaham, 33, is facing multiple charges from both the Anderson County Sheriff's Office and the Greenville Police Department The suspect and the teenager's relationship "intensified as she reportedly signed the student out of school, transported him to practices, and served as a supervisor for after-school activities," the ACSO wrote on social mediaA former elementary school teacher in South Carolina has been arrested after having "an inappropriate and unlawful relationship with a 14-year-old male," authorities have said. On the morning of Thursday, July 10, former Anderson County teacher Nicole Ballew Callaham, 33, "voluntarily surrendered herself" and was "charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor," the Anderson County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) wrote in an Instagram post. Detectives determined that the former teacher "had a prolonged" relationship with the teen, and had allegedly "engaged in grooming behavior toward the boy during his early teenage years," the post stated. "An investigation initiated in May 2025 uncovered evidence that the misconduct began in 2021 and continued for at least two years with the then teenage boy," the sheriff's office wrote. The Greenville Police Department added in a separate post obtained by PEOPLE and shared on Facebook that "some of the alleged criminal activity had occurred within the jurisdiction of the City of Greenville." The police department confirmed that Callaham had previously worked as an elementary school teacher, writing, "The investigation revealed that Callaham engaged in an inappropriate and unlawful relationship with a 14-year-old male. Based on evidence collected, Greenville detectives obtained arrest warrants for multiple offenses committed within our jurisdiction." In addition to the ACSO's charges, the suspect has also been charged with eight counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and four counts of unlawful conduct towards a child by the Greenville Police Department. The ACSO said on Instagram that the suspect and the teenager's relationship had "intensified as she reportedly signed the student out of school, transported him to practices, and served as a supervisor for after-school activities." "These repeated interactions led to a prolonged pattern of abuse, which was corroborated by search warrants and ongoing cooperation with the victim's family," the sheriff's office added. "According to investigators, the victim made the decision to come forward after turning 18, following time spent processing the experience and trauma associated with the abuse," the post stated. The sheriff's office also confirmed that a "parallel investigation is currently underway by the Clemson City Police Department." Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Callaham has since resigned from her teaching position "and Anderson School District Five is aware of the investigation and charges made by ACSO detectives," the post noted. Former Hatton town clerk-treasurer arrested for theft from town

Jun. 10—Key points: * Jared Potts, former Hatton Clerk-Treasurer, suspected of misappropriating town funds * Turned himself in the Adams County Sheriff's Office on June 6. RITZVILLE — The former Hatton clerk-treasurer and fire chief turned himself in to the Adams County Sheriff's Office on June 6 while under investigation for first-degree theft, first-degree possession of stolen property and seven counts of mail theft. Jared Potts, Lind, allegedly misappropriated town funds and kept town equipment at his home. Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner said the ACSO served a search warrant at Potts' home last week and found equipment that belonged to the town of Hatton. Potts had agreed to return equipment to the town following an investigation by the Washington State Auditor's Office, Wagner said, but some of it was found at his residence during the search. Concerns about Potts first surfaced in 2023, Wagner said, both from ACSO and from Hatton residents. "We got a few more complaints over a couple of years," Wagner said. Potts ended his employment with Hatton in October 2024. The WSAO report said a possible misappropriation of funds was reported in April 2023 by a former town employee who was working temporarily following the resignation of Hatton's mayor. The report from the WSAO said auditors determined Potts had misappropriated about $72,200 from the town between December 2022 and November 2024. "Additionally, $144,604 in questionable payments occurred between Oct. 25, 2022, and Sept. 20, 2024," the WSAO report said. The clerk-treasurer was one of two part-time employees, and the only one who issued a town credit card, the report said. "Our review of credit card statements identified $15,055 in questionable purchases between Feb. 21, 2023, and July 13, 2023, because the town did not have adequate documentation to show the transactions had a legitimate business purpose," it said. Auditors found about $36,000 paid to Potts as salary in excess of his approved work schedule, as well as cash advances that he hadn't repaid, between December 2022 and October 2024. Potts also acted as the chief of the town's volunteer department, established in December 2023. He applied to federal and state programs for equipment; the department received fire trucks and water tenders, among other pieces of firefighting apparatus. That included defibrillators. Potts allegedly kept a fire vehicle and a defibrillator at his residence, the auditor's report said. He returned the fire truck in September 2024. The defibrillator was found at his residence during the ACSO search. Potts talked to auditors in August 2024 and said he would provide documentation for the financial transactions, but never did, the WSAO report said. Potts continued to have access to Hatton's bank accounts following his resignation from town employ, the report said, and auditors found about $3,600 in payments by Potts from town accounts in October and November 2024.

The suspect, identified as Juan Carlos Cruz Jr., had 258 pounds of illegal fireworks. Investigators were monitoring social media for any signs of illegal activity related to fireworks. They later found Cruz was also in possession of a 'controlled substance with the intent to sell and ammunition.' According to the Livermore Fire Department, all fireworks — including 'safe and sane' — are illegal in the city and unincorporated Alameda County. 'The use of illegal fireworks presents a significant danger to public safety, posing serious risks of injury and fire,' ACSO wrote.
