World's Space Agencies Say Asteroid Has 1.3% Chance of Hitting Earth in 2032
Asteroid 2024 YR4, as it's been designated, was flagged by the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) for its potential to impact Earth on 22 December 2032.
"This is one of the highest probabilities of an impact from a significantly sized rock ever," Catalina Sky Survey engineer David Rankin wrote on Bluesky. "Most likely outcome is still a near miss."
But the asteroid's size, and the non-zero chance of it hitting Earth within the next 50 years, is enough to prick the ears of two UN-endorsed asteroid reaction groups.
The IAWN will coordinate international organisations to continue monitoring 2024 YR4, and if necessary, develop a strategy for world governments in preparing for the hit and its consequences.
"The first step in the planetary defence response is to trigger further observations," astronomer Colin Snodgrass from the University of Edinburgh told Ian Sample at The Guardian.
"If these observations don't rule out an impact, the next steps will be more detailed characterisation measurements using telescopes, and discussion of what space agencies could do in terms of more detailed reconnaissance and eventually mitigation missions."
Asteroid 2024 YR4 was first sighted on 27 December 2024 by a telescope in Río Hurtado, Chile. This telescope is part of a network that automatically scans the sky looking for early warning signs of asteroid impacts, aptly named the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS).
The asteroid's diameter, while not enough to wreak immediate global havoc, is definitely enough to cause severe damage to whatever region it hits, potentially spanning as far as 50 kilometers from the impact site.
It's too soon to know where on Earth that would be, if it happens at all, but the IAWN's Potential Impact Notification lists the eastern Pacific, northern South America, Africa, and South Asia as potential sites.
A range of international agencies, including the European Space Agency, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, and the Italian Near Earth Objects Dynamic Site, agree that the chance of the asteroid hitting Earth is just over 1 percent.
Nonetheless, it's been rated 3 on the Torino Scale, which means we should pay it some attention, though it's likely to be reassigned to 0 with further telescopic observations.
Only one asteroid in history has ever received a higher Torino scale rating. Near-Earth asteroid 99942 Apophis set the record at 4 in December 2024.
Thankfully, recent calculations have ruled out the possibility of Apophis colliding with Earth for the foreseeable future.
The odds of near-Earth asteroids colliding with our planet tend to rise in the early days of sighting them. At first we have just a few points of reference from which to calculate the asteroid's orbit. Because its path is less certain, at this stage the 'risk corridor' is very wide, increasing its potential overlap with Earth.
As we receive more data by watching the asteroid's movements, we can be more certain of its predicted path, so it becomes narrower.
Earth is usually still in the line of fire at this point. Because the path is more certain, the risk of the asteroid hitting Earth always appears to increase at this point.
But ultimately, the more certain that path becomes, the narrower it gets, which in most cases reveals an asteroid trajectory that is both very certain, and, thankfully, not on course for Earth.
It's particularly difficult to accurately predict asteroid 2024 YR4's path at the moment, because it has an elongated (eccentric) orbit around the Sun, and it's currently moving in almost a straight line away from Earth. So its uncertainty region is massive.
Meanwhile, the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group will discuss the asteroid at a routine meeting in Vienna in the coming week.
If the asteroid impact risk remains above 1 percent, the group will provide advice to the United Nations and consider our options, which will likely involve diverting or destroying the asteroid via spacecraft, like NASA's Dart mission.
"This asteroid is of the scale that a mission like Dart could be effective, if required, so we have the technology and it has been tested," Snodgrass said.

Asteroid 2024 YR4 has popped up on the news again, offering both peril and opportunities, A few months ago, NASA noted that 2024 YR4 had a 3.1 percent chance of hitting the Earth in 2032. Since the rock is 50 to 90 meters in diameter, if it were to hit the Earth, it would cause an explosion equivalent to a nuclear bomb with the accompanying devastation. Subsequently, NASA dialed down the threat 2024 YR4 posed to the Earth and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Now, the Earth approaching asteroid has a new target. A small chance exists that it will hit the moon in 2032. The prospect presents new dangers, though not as great as the destruction of a city. According to ZME Science, new data from the James Webb Space Telescope, 2024 YR4 has a 4.3 percent chance of hitting the moon on December 22, 2032. 'If 2024 YR4 hits, it will create a blast equivalent to 6.5 million tons of TNT. The resulting crater would stretch about a kilometer across — bigger than almost any the Moon has seen in the last 5,000 years.' Depending on whether the asteroid hits the near side of the moon —a 50-50 chance assuming it hits it at all — about 10 percent of the debris, about 100 million kilograms, ranging in size from flecks of dust to a small pebbles, could be captured by the Earth's gravity and reach the atmosphere in perhaps three to five days. Little if any debris kicked up by a lunar impact would threaten the Earth's surface. At most, it would cause a spectacular meteor shower unlike anything in our lifetimes. Both scientists and casual sky watchers will be intrigued at this once in several millennia event. The effects on space assets are another matter, however. Satellites, ranging from relatively small Comsats to commercial space stations expected to be in operation by the 2030s, will be subjected to tiny objects traveling at tens of thousands of meters per second. SpaceX's Starlink constellation will be at particular risk. 'This debris won't likely destroy spacecraft and satellites, but it adds wear and tear,' writes ZME. 'In rare cases, a lucky — or unlucky — piece of rock could disable a satellite or trigger a cascade of debris collisions.' Both NASA and Chinese astronauts may be living and working on the moon at the time 2024 YR4 hits and will be in jeopardy due to falling debris or other hazards. The Lunar Gateway, if it exists in seven years, could also be subject to impacts. What, if anything, can be done about it? The option exists of doing nothing. After all, a four percent chance of the asteroid hitting the moon means a 96 percent chance of it not hitting the moon. However, if the powers that be were to decide to divert 2024 YR4 so that it doesn't hit the moon, the technical task should be relatively easy. NASA has already tested asteroid deflection with its DART mission, which diverted an asteroid named Dimorphos with a kinetic impactor. The economic and political problems facing the diversion of 2024 YR4 are another matter. NASA is currently in turmoil due to proposed draconian budget cuts and a lack of a permanent administrator. The Space Force, which is being lavished with money compared to NASA, might be assigned the task. Indeed, an asteroid diversion mission could be good practice for space operations by America's newest military branch. The other alternative is to perform a redirection mission to 2024 YR4 privately. One of the things that Jared Isaacman, the billionaire entrepreneur whose nomination to be NASA administrator President Trump abruptly withdrew, is contemplating is private science missions. An asteroid redirect mission might fit into that model. One can see SpaceX's Elon Musk financing such a mission. Musk has deep pockets and an incentive to divert 2024 YR4 if it threatens his Starlink constellation. Asteroid diversion might become a good business for private launch companies such as SpaceX. If a really big space rock threatens the Earth, the nations of the world might be willing to pay a lot of money to ward it off. Someone like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, founder of SpaceX competitor Blue Origin, might literally save the world for a profit. If such an asteroid is rich in useful natural resources, its diversion to a safe, stable orbit around the Earth would be even more profitable. Access to such a source of minerals could spark a space-based industrial revolution. Save the world and get fabulously wealthy doing so. Someone really should make a movie out of that scenario, before it becomes true life. NASA confirms that mysterious object shooting through the solar system is an 'interstellar visitor' — and it has a new name

NASA scientists have confirmed that a mysterious object shooting toward us through the solar system is an "interstellar object" — only the third of its kind ever seen. Experts have also given the cosmic interloper an official name, and revealed new information about its origins and trajectory. News of the extrasolar entity, initially dubbed A11pl3Z, broke on Tuesday (July 1), when NASA and the International Astronomical Union (IAU) both listed it as a confirmed object. It was first discovered in data collected between June 25 and June 29 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), which automatically scans the night sky using telescopes in Hawaii, Chile and South Africa. Multiple telescopes across the world have subsequently spotted the object in observation data that date back to June 14. The object is traveling toward the sun extremely fast, at around 152,000 mph (245,000 km/h), and observations suggest that it is set on an extremely flat and straight trajectory, unlike anything else in the solar system. This led many experts to speculate that it originated from beyond the sun's gravitational influence and has enough momentum to shoot straight through our cosmic neighborhood without slowing down. On Wednesday (July 2), NASA released a statement confirming that A11pl3Z is indeed an interstellar object and will not remain in the solar system for long. The researchers also shared the object's new official name, 3I/ATLAS, and revealed that it is most likely a comet, upending previous assumptions that it was an asteroid. The object's full comet name is C/2025 N1 (ATLAS). Until now, only two confirmed interstellar visitors have ever been spotted: Comet 2I/Borisov, which was seen sailing through the solar system in 2019; and 'Oumuamua, a cigar-shaped object that made headlines in 2017 when some astronomers argued it was potentially an alien probe, before experts showed it was most likely a hydrogen-spewing space rock. But scientists have long suspected that many more interstellar interlopers likely pass through our cosmic neighborhood without ever being detected. However, the object has displayed "tentative signs of cometary activity" like 2I/Borisov — including being surrounded by a bright cloud of gas and ice, known as a coma, and having what looks like a tail — according to the IAU's Minor Planet Center. However, more observations are needed to confirm this. There has been no additional information about the potential comet's size or shape: The current best guess is that it could be up to 12 miles (20 kilometers) across. However, NASA has revealed updated information about its upcoming journey through the solar system. 3I/ATLAS is currently around 4.5 times as far from the sun as Earth is. It will reach its closest point to the sun, or perihelion, on Oct. 30, coming within 1.4 Earth-sun distances, or astronomical units (AU), of our home star. Shortly before this happens, the comet will also make its closest approach to Mars, coming within 0.4 AU of the Red Planet. Earth will be on the opposite side of the sun to 3I/ATLAS during its solar flyby. The comet will likely make its closest approach to Earth in December, on its journey back out of the solar system. As a result, "the comet poses no threat to Earth and will remain at a [minimum] distance of at least 1.6 astronomical units," NASA officials wrote in the statement. The interloper is currently too faint to see with amateur stargazing equipment, but it may brighten significantly in the coming weeks and months. However, you can watch it shoot through the solar system via an upcoming livestream from the Virtual Telescope Project, starting at 6:00 p.m. EST on Thursday (July 3). A comet from an entirely different solar system is flying through ours, NASA says
An interstellar tourist is taking a quick trip through our solar system, becoming one of just three known objects to ever do so, according to NASA. A comet from a solar system outside our own was first noticed on July 1 by a NASA telescope located in Rio Hurtado, Chile, as part of the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). When scanning the sky for space debris that could pose a threat to Earth, it detected a then-unknown object zipping through space. NASA then gathered data collected about the object from several telescopes around the world, tracing its earliest captured appearance back to June 14. Officially named 3I/ATLAS, the comet was confirmed as having originated outside of Earth's solar system on July 3, according to the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA. It is believed to be about 20 kilometers, or over 12 miles wide, according to the ESA and traveling at about 60 kilometers, or 37 miles per second relative to the sun. The visitor poses no threat, NASA said, as it will remain at least 150 million miles away from Earth. It is 420 million miles away as of July 3, and will reach its closest point to the sun around Oct. 30, when it passes by at a distance of about 130 million miles. It will be observable by telescope until September, advised NASA, when it will then approach the sun too closely to be seen, but will be viewable again around December. "While every planet, moon, asteroid, comet and lifeform that formed in our Solar System shares a common origin, a common heritage, interstellar visitors are true outsiders," the ESA said in a post to X, formerly Twitter. Scientists know of only two other interstellar objects that have ever been observed from Earth. The first, 1I/2017 U1 'Oumuamua, was discovered by the University of Hawaii's Pan-STARRS1 telescope on Oct. 19, 2017. Described by NASA as "cigar-shaped" with a "reddish hue," it was originally believed to be a comet, then an asteroid, then possibly a comet again. The second, Comet 2I/Borisov, was spotted by amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov of Crimea on Aug. 30, 2019. It streaked through our solar system at 110,000 mph, according to NASA, and behaved more like an active comet.
