Dhanush Says Aanand L Rai Invested Own Money To Cast Him In Raanjhanaa: 'They Didn't Have Budget'

Last Updated: Dhanush reveals he nearly turned down Raanjhanaa due to budget issues, and shares how director Aanand L Rai personally backed him to play Kundan. Dhanush might be a big name in Tamil cinema, but back in 2013, when he was gearing up for his Bollywood debut with Raanjhanaa, things weren't exactly smooth sailing. In fact, he nearly walked away from the film altogether. The actor recently looked back on the film during a special fan screening celebrating its 12th anniversary. While Raanjhanaa became a cult favourite over the years, Dhanush admitted that he was close to saying no – and it all came down to the budget. 'At that time, they didn't have the right kind of budget for hiring me as the lead actor. But this man's (Aanand L Rai) passion was so strong that he just wanted me to play Kundan. He could have offered any actor this part and they would have happily come on board. After all, it's such a great part," Dhanush shared, as quoted in SCREEN. The part he's talking about – Kundan – was a lovestruck Varanasi boy whose obsession and heartbreak eventually pull him into the world of politics. According to him, director Aanand L Rai had to take a big risk to make it happen. 'He went against all odds. I don't know I am supposed to say this and I don't care! He invested his own money as well. He went all out (to cast me). He saw Kundan in me and he stayed true to his vision," Dhanush said. Even for a seasoned performer like Dhanush, the pressure was real. He revealed that stepping into the Hindi film world brought a kind of fear he hadn't experienced before. 'I was not scared during my first film. When I was written off, I was not scared. That's how I am. But for the first time, I was scared. I felt responsible. So, I was praying so hard to God that 'Somehow save this man,'" he said, reflecting on the weight of expectations. In the end, the gamble paid off. Raanjhanaa clicked with audiences and critics alike. 'They made a cult classic. It is not the story of Kundan and Zoya. It is the story of two mad men who believed in this," Dhanush added. The film also starred Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and became a defining moment in Aanand L Rai's directorial career. Since Raanjhanaa, Dhanush and Aanand L Rai have teamed up again, including in the 2021 film Atrangi Re, and are working together on Tere Ishq Mein – a film Rai has said is set in 'the same world as Raanjhanaa." Superman' box office collections day 17: James Gunn's film stays the course; soars past Rs 3600 Cr globally

James Gunn's Superman (3D) is showing no signs of slowing down globally. With a whopping worldwide gross of Rs 3603.76 crore, the film has become one of the standout performers of the year internationally. In India, while the total net collection stands at Rs 47.95 crore, the movie has earned an estimated gross of Rs 57.26 crore, as reported by the Sacnilk website. Regional versions contribute The film's dubbed Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi versions have shown patchy performances in contrast. Telugu has collected Rs 1.67 crore so far, with the early days contributing the bulk. Tamil fared similarly with Rs 1.84 crore net, where the peak was mostly during the first weekend. The Hindi version has pulled in Rs 9.65 crore so far, thanks to support from Hindi-speaking metros and decent Sunday traction during the first two weekends. Although numbers started tapering off post Day 10, the Hindi audience has shown a steady trickle. Strong start, predictable dip, and weekend revival 'Superman' launched with Rs 7.25 crore on day 1 and picked up further on its first Saturday with Rs 9.5 crore. The film saw a minor drop on Sunday but maintained momentum, closing its opening weekend with Rs 26 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Casa Maquista chefs explore turmeric's essence in Macanese cuisine. Though far from record-breaking, 'Superman's numbers reflect a stable theatrical presence, aided by Gunn's fresh take on the DC universe and a cast that brings renewed energy to familiar capes. With a few more days of run ahead, the film may inch closer to the Rs 50 crore milestone in India. The film features David Corenswet as the iconic Superman alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult , Isabela Merced , Nathan Fillion , Anthony Carrigan, and Edi Gathegi in prominent roles. Saiyaara box office collection day 10: Ahaan Panday, Aneet Padda's film sees another jump on second Sunday as it eyes Chhaava record, crosses Rs 300 cr worldwide

A day after becoming the second highest grossing Hindi film of 2025, Mohit Suri's romantic drama Saiyaara has added another feather to its cap. The Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda-starrer has now crossed the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide after adding another Rs 30 crore to its domestic box office collection on the second Sunday. Saiyaara had already crossed Rs 280 crore worldwide on Saturday. Saiyaara India box office collection On its 10th day at the domestic box office, Saiyaara collected Rs 30 crore, yet another jump from its Saturday (day 9) collection of Rs 26.5 crore. The film breached the daily limit of Rs 20 crore on Saturday after two days of earning less than that. Besides day 10, Saiyaara managed to cross the Rs 30 crore mark in a day only last Sunday (day 3) when it earned Rs 35.75 crore, another major spike from its Saturday (day 2) earnings of Rs 26 crore. As per Sacnilk, the box office collection of Saiyaara in India now stands at Rs 247.25 crore. The film has already crossed the domestic box office collections of several superstar films like Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 (Rs 198.41 crore), Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 (Rs 179.30 crore), and Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par (Rs 165.85 crore). Saiyaara is second biggest box office earner if 2025 Saiyaara's current domestic box office collection is only next to that of Laxman Utekar's period action film Chaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, which earned Rs 615.39 crore. It's a long way to go before Suri's film can even come close to that record. With fresh competition in Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 and Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri-starrer Dhadak 2 coming in this Friday, the progress of Saiyaara is likely to slow down. Saiyaara marks the debut of Ahaan Panday, who's the first cousin of actor Ananya Panday and the nephew of Chunky Panday. It is also the first lead outing for Padda, who first made an impression in the Prime Video India series Big Girls Don't Cry last year. The film also stars actors Geeta Agarwal, Rajesh Kumar, Varun Badola and Shaad Randhawa in prominent roles. Produced by Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Films, the official logline of the film reads, 'Passionate lovers navigate a rollercoaster romance, facing euphoric highs and crushing lows while desperately clinging to their tumultuous bond.' It also marks the debut of YRF CEO Akshaye Widhani as producer. Also Read: Saiyaara just fixed everything Bollywood broke about love Last week, Aamir Khan congratulated the team of Saiyaara by posting a note on the official social media handles of his banner, Aamir Khan Productions. 'Congratulations to the entire team of 'Saiyaara' on its remarkable theatrical success! Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda shine in their debut film with such grace and depth. Mohit Suri brings his intensity and passion to the film, and full credit to YRF for championing this melodious and and heartfelt story.' Not only Aamir, but also other industry stalwarts like Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar have congratulated the team of Saiyaara for the resounding success.
