It isn't getting any better for Anthony Volpe.
It was another lost day for the young Yankees shortstop.

Another empty afternoon at the plate and a shaky nine innings in the field, in the Yankees' 4-1 loss to the Cubs in The Bronx on Sunday.
Volpe's errant throw in the seventh cost the Yankees a run and his offensive issues continued in an 0-for-3 day that dropped him to 9-for-70 dating to June 23.
Volpe has seen his batting average fall to .214 and OPS drop to .671.
His last multihit game was back on June 21.

But most concerning might be his defense, which has fallen off of late.
He made two mistakes on Sunday.
With a runner on second base in the seventh inning and two outs, he got to a ground ball up the middle by Cubs speedster Pete Crow-Armstrong.

But Volpe's throw was wide to first and Seiya Suzuki came all the way around from second to score the Cubs' fourth run.
Both Volpe and manager Aaron Boone said it was the right play, to try to get Crow-Armstrong at first, rather than pump-faking to first and trying to get Suzuki coming around third.
'Just a good job by them of taking advantage of a slowly developing play that we didn't finish,' Boone said. 'If [the throw] is on line, he's out.'

The gaffe in the eighth was worse.
Volpe stayed back on a routine grounder.
He casually threw to second base for the force play to end the inning.

But Dansby Swanson beat the throw to extend the inning. Luke Weaver got out of the jam. Volpe said he should've been more aggressive.
'As a shortstop, you gotta have the freedom to try and get yourself the best hop, and then, Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] probably has to turn into a first baseman there where we're stretching because obviously it's the third out,' Boone said. 'And then a good job by Swanson of just getting his butt to the bag.'
At the All-Star break, Volpe doesn't appear to be heading in the right direction.

'I think ups and downs. I think a lot of room for improvement,' Volpe said when asked how he would evaluate his play so far this season. 'That's why I'm excited for the second half, to just help the team every night. Like I said, there's a lot of room for improvement there.'

Jonquel Jones scores 18 points in return from injury as Liberty beat Fever 98-84

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Jonquel Jones scored 18 points in her return from an ankle injury, and the New York Liberty beat the Indiana Fever 98-84 on Tuesday night. Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich each scored 17, Sabrina Ionescu had 13 points and nine assists, and Isabelle Harrison also had 13 points to help the Liberty (15-6) beat the Fever for the second straight time. New York beat Indiana 98-77 last Wednesday in their last game before the All-Star break. Kelsey Mitchell scored 29 points to lead the Fever (12-11), which again played without Caitlin Clark (groin injury). New York struggled in the first half with Ionescu and Stewart scoring three points and six points, respectively — an anomaly for the duo that averages 18 and 19 points per game. Ionescu was held scoreless in the second and third quarters, spending most of the third on the bench. The Fever led 46-42 at halftime, capitalizing on Liberty turnovers to grab the thin lead. They held on to that advantage for most of the third quarter, until Stewart made a 3-pointer and a layup to put the Liberty back on top in the final minutes of the quarter. Ionescu's return in the fourth helped solidify the momentum moving in New York's direction. She scored 10 straight points for the Liberty coming off the bench, opening the first double-digit lead of the night. Jones had been out since June 19th. ___ recommended Item 1 of 1

Jacob deGrom strikes out 9 and helps the Rangers to a 6-2 win over the Athletics

Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jacob deGrom struck out nine and allowed a leadoff homer in six solid innings, and Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia homered as the Texas Rangers beat the Athletics 6-2 on Tuesday night. DeGrom (10-2) was making his first start since July 12. The All-Star right-hander opted not to pitch in the Midsummer Classic and settled down quickly after allowing a homer to Lawrence Butler at the start. DeGrom retired 10 straight A's at one point and allowed just three hits while throwing 86 pitches, 60 for strikes. Garcia's homer in the fourth inning tied it and Texas went ahead to stay in the sixth on Semien's 364-foot shot off the foul pole in left field that required replay review to be confirmed. Seager's 3-run shot highlighted a four-run seventh. The Rangers shortstop has reached base in 23 straight games. Sean Newcomb (2-5) took the loss for the Athletics. Starter J.T. Ginn yielded one run in five innings, allowing five hits with two strikeouts. Butler's homer was his 14th of the season for the A's, who have lost three straight. Key moment Seager's three-run, 399-foot homer in a four-run seventh provided the necessary run support to secure the victory. Key stat DeGrom secured his 10th win of the season, marking the fifth time in his career he has had double-digit wins. Up next The Athletics will start LHP JP Sears (7-8, 5.13 ERA) in the finale of the three-game set on Wednesday. The Rangers have not announced a starter. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

Matthew Boyd sharp for 11th win, Cubs blank Royals and Rich Hill 6-0.

Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — Matthew Boyd pitched seven crisp innings for his 11th win, and the Chicago Cubs spoiled Rich Hill's return to the majors with a 6-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson and Matt Shaw each had two hits as Chicago ended a two-game slide. Shaw, Hoerner, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly had RBIs. Boyd (11-3) gave up four hits, struck out six and walked one in winning his fifth straight start. Caleb Thielbar followed with a perfect eighth and Daniel Palencia worked around two singles in the ninth to complete a six-hitter. Hill (0-1) became the oldest active player in baseball after the Royals selected the 45-year-old from Triple-A Omaha. He allowed three runs — one earned — and six hits in five innings. The left-hander threw 90 pitches (55 strikes), walking two and striking out one. It was the debut of Hill's 21st season in the majors and his first with Kansas City. The Royals are his 14th major league team, matching Edwin Jackson's record. Hill and the Royals fell behind 2-0 in the second when the Royals committed two errors, botching potential double plays. Crow-Armstrong doubled in a run off Hill in the fifth. The Cubs put the game away with three runs in the seventh off Jonathan Bowlan. , Key moment After Loftin singled in the fifth, the Royals loaded the bases with one out on Freddy Fermin's bloop and John Rave's bunt single. Key stat The Cubs stole six bases in the game, including four off Hill. That included a double-steal by Justin Turner and Shaw in the second, Chicago scored its final run with on double-steal with Kyle Tucker stealing home and Suzuzki second base in the seventh.
