Zii Jia accepts world meet invite, eyes comeback in Paris
PETALING JAYA: Professional men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is set to make an appearance at the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31 after a four-month absence.
Based on an update from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on July 29, Zii Jia has confirmed his participation in the tournament after receiving an invitation from the world body.
However, should the former world No. 2 change his mind, he still has time until Aug 12 to do so.
Zii Jia had been struggling with a left ankle ligament injury since December last year, and has only competed in two tournaments this year, the Orleans Masters and All-England in March before the injury flared up again.
His management, Team LZJ, had successfully secured a protected ranking for Zii Jia, and he initially planned to return at the US Open in June, but had to withdraw as he had yet to fully recover.
For the same reason, Zii Jia also missed the China Open and Japan Open, which ended just a few weeks ago.
The former All-England champion recently sparked concern after posting a series of unsettling sketches on his social media, prompting fans to question his mental well-being.
While some viewed it as a form of artistic expression, others believe it could be a reflection of his frustration and demoralization stemming from his prolonged absence from the court.
Meanwhile, if he competes in the World Championships this time, he will be joined by another compatriot, Leong Jun Hao, who will be making his debut in the tournament.
Paris proved to be a memorable venue for Zii Jia last year, as he captured a bronze medal at the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, in the women's singles event, Malaysia will also be represented by two shuttlers, Goh Jin Wei and K. Letshanaa. All players will find out their opponents and potential path to the podium when the World Championships draw is held on Aug 13.

Justin hits back at old foe to make historic Macau semis
KUALA LUMPUR: Men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh achieved a career breakthrough at the Macau Open on Friday by reaching his first World Tour Super 300 semi-final. The world No. 45 delivered a confident performance to oust Thailand's world No. 54 Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-9, 21-18 in the quarter-finals, a result that secured his biggest run yet on the World Tour. It also avenged his defeat to the 2019 World Championships bronze medallist at last year's Korea Masters. Justin was in complete control in the opening game, racing ahead from the start to leave no room for a fightback. The second game proved more competitive, but the 21-year-old Malaysian remained composed under pressure to close it out in straight games. Having reached the quarter-finals at the Taiwan Open in each of the past two years, Justin finally broke new ground in Macau and will now be hoping to take another step forward. He will next face another surprise semi-finalist in India's world No. 47 Tharun Mannepalli, who has enjoyed a dream run in Macau. Tharun shocked top seed Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong in the last 16 before going on to defeat China's reigning world junior champion Hu Zhe An 21-12, 13-21, 21-18 in the quarter-finals, On paper, the clash between Justin and Tharun appears evenly matched, with both players looking to make their first-ever World Tour final.

Track queen Shereen's World Championships spot still uncertain
KUALA LUMPUR: Is track queen Shereen Samson Vallabouy set to represent Malaysia at the World Championships in Tokyo from Sept 13-23? Malaysia Athletics (MA) had earlier confirmed she would be granted a wild card by World Athletics. However, her mother and former national athlete, Josephine Mary, has claimed the matter is far from settled. "MA will decide one month before the world meet on the wild card, and it will depend on current form," said Josephine. She revealed Shereen has shifted her focus to the 100m event instead of the 400m since competing at the Asian Championships in South Korea in May. At that meet, Shereen, who won bronze in the 400m at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games with a time of 52.58s, was battling a fever and could only manage 54.80 in her heat, failing to make the final. Shereen holds the national record of 51.79 for the 400m. The qualifying mark for the World Championships is 50.72. Despite the setback, the Florida-based 27-year-old has bounced back in style. Trained by Derrick White, she clocked a season's best of 11.72 to win the 100m at the JAC Final Countdown meet in Florida, on July 26. Her personal best in the event is 11.61. "She was advised to tone down her endurance work and focus on speed to allow full recovery," said Josephine. "She's concentrating on the 100m first and will gradually return to the 400m. It was encouraging to see her win the 100m last week."

West Ham's Paqueta cleared of betting charges
LONDON, Aug 1 — West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing charges by an independent regulatory commission, the club announced on Thursday. The Brazil international was charged with four alleged breaches of Football Association (FA) rules in relation to matches involving the Premier League side. It was alleged the 27-year-old directly sought to influence games by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the 'improper purpose of affecting the betting market'. The four charges against Paqueta related to a game against Leicester in November 2022 and matches against Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth in 2023. He was facing the prospect of a lifetime ban if found guilty. The Brazilian denied the charges and the independent regulatory commission found them not proven following a hearing. The FA said two charges against Paqueta, related to a failure to cooperate with its investigation, had been found proven. It said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches 'at the earliest opportunity'. The Brazilian, who joined West Ham in 2022, said in a club statement that he had always maintained his 'innocence against these extremely serious accusations'. 'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face,' he said. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me.' West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady said: 'We are pleased Lucas has been cleared. He has maintained his innocence from the outset, and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process.' Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level and the head of Paqueta's legal team, said: 'Few cases carry the gravity of this one — professionally, personally and emotionally for our client. 'Lucas has faced down immense pressure with remarkable strength and resilience.' The FA said it was awaiting the written reasons from the independent commission in relation to its decision on the charges, and would not be commenting further until that time. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali was given a suspended two-month ban in May last year over breaches of betting rules. It came as the Italian international was serving a 10-month ban handed down by the Italian authorities for betting offences. — AFP
