Spectacle over substance? Govt picks Sky Deck, Metro depot sinks
Bengaluru: Place the Sky Deck on one side of a weighing scale and the Metro depot on the other. One is a towering 250-metre structure aimed at boosting tourism, while the other is critical transport infrastructure that would improve train frequency, reduce traffic, and connect the city to the ask: which carries more weight in terms of public value?.While the government has fast-tracked the Sky Deck project by allocating 41 acres of land in Kommaghatta on July 23, it has failed to show the same intent or political will to hand over an equal amount of land in Hebbal for Namma Metro's depot. The reason: real estate developers also have their eyes on the same hands over Bengaluru Sky Deck project to BDA, doubles land allocation to 41 Metro's original plan to build a stabling depot at Hebbal received a major setback on July 14, when a high-powered committee led by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh slashed the land allocation from 45 acres to just nine. In the revised plan, BMRCL has dropped its plan to build a depot at Hebbal, a move expected to reduce train frequency on the upcoming Hebbal–Sarjapur Metro line (Phase 3A) and increase operational decision came despite repeated assurances from both Deputy CM Shivakumar and Industries Minister MB Patil, who had promised to 'protect Namma Metro's interests' just months earlier. In the process, Metro has also lost a year's North MP Shobha Karandlaje, under whose constituency the Hebbal land falls, called the move a big injustice and a crime. In her letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, she warned that the decision would 'choke the entry point of the city' and 'hinder industrial growth in Bengaluru North.'.Striking both the Sky Deck site in Kommaghatta and the proposed Metro depot land in Hebbal bear striking similarities. These two properties were acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for different purposes nearly two decades ago, on behalf of private one of the private developers – Lake View Tourism Corporation – is yet to compensate the landowners, the other – Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE) – is under the scanner for acquiring more land than permitted under the 1997 Framework the case of the 41 acres earmarked for the Sky Deck, the land ownership carries a different status. While the KIADB has executed sale deeds in favour of NICE in some cases, others technically remain with the government as the company did not pay the full amount. About 8 acres and 12 guntas of this is government property leased to the status of the Hebbal land is worse. In May 2004, KIADB notified 55 acres for Lake View Tourism Corporation. However, the company never paid compensation to the original landowners, leaving the acquisition incomplete for two March last year, BMRCL offered to pay ₹12.10 crore per acre under the latest land acquisition norms. This proposal addressed two key issues: providing Namma Metro with a crucial plot between the city and airport for a depot and multimodal hub, and helping the KIADB compensate the original Lake View Tourism Corporation was given the first choice to compensate the farmers by paying ₹12.10 crore per acre, it challenged the offer, arguing that its acquisition process began before the 2013 Land Acquisition Act took effect. It also secured a stay, contending that KIADB's notice was arbitrary and KIADB is, however, yet to challenge the is worth noting that while slashing Metro's land requirement in a move that technically favoured a private company, the government did not take into account a recent high court order passed by Justice R order had set aside the acquisition of several acres of land for the Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project as the KIADB had failed to pass awards even 23 years after issuing final notifications. The court referred to multiple rulings of both the High Court and Supreme Court while quashing the land acquisition mobility experts have criticised the government's approach, pointing out that ministers and bureaucrats have sided with spectacle instead of substance..'The entire land should be allocated to the Namma Metro. Public interest must take priority over private ambitions,' said Deepak C N, general secretary of Karnataka Rashtra Samithi, a political outfit.

India enters humanoid robotics race with Sherpa Mecha as China surges ahead
At its Product Day 2025 event, Indian robotics startup Ati Motors unveiled what could mark a pivotal moment for India's deep-tech sector — the debut of Sherpa Mecha, a humanoid-inspired robot engineered for industrial deployment. Unlike fully human-like robots, Sherpa Mecha is function-first — designed to carry out high-precision tasks in complex factory environments, the company said in a press release. The robot's launch highlights a quiet but bold ambition — building world-class robotic platforms from India that are scalable, intelligent, and export-ready. Sherpa 10K and India's expanding industrial robot ecosystem The company also launched Sherpa 10K, a heavy-duty autonomous mobile robot (AMR) capable of carrying loads up to five tonnes with millimetre-level accuracy. These platforms are already running over 1 million autonomous missions per year across Southeast Asia, the US, and Mexico. Sherpa 10K, a robust autonomous tugger engineered for the most demanding Indian and global industrial environments, with a tugging capacity of up to 5 tonnes. 'Every Sherpa deployed is a testament to India's capabilities in advanced engineering and AI, given that it takes an ecosystem to deliver these and not just the ingenuity of a single startup,' said Saurabh Chandra, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ati Motors. Where are humanoids being used in India today? India's humanoid applications are still largely in the exploratory stage. Ati's Sherpa Mecha is tailored to industrial automation — assembly lines, material handling, and quality inspection — but remains in testing phases. Elsewhere: Invento Robotics developed 'Mitra,' a semi-humanoid used in hospitality and health care Isro is preparing Vyommitra, a spacefaring humanoid, for Gaganyaan missions in Q4 2025 DRDO is prototyping humanoids for military and hazardous environments Addverb Technologies, backed by Reliance, is set to launch a dual-arm humanoid in 2025 Despite this activity, India is far from mass-scale deployment in logistics, elder-care, or public services — sectors where China is already forging ahead. What is India's humanoid market size? India's humanoid-robot market is in a nascent but growing phase. Cognitive Market Research estimates the market to be worth $75.4 million in 2025 with a CAGR of 44 per cent. Other projections suggest it could grow from $42 million in 2023 to $149 million by 2030 at 20 per cent CAGR. In contrast, China's investment and market penetration remain significantly higher. How is China accelerating humanoid deployment? China has aggressively positioned humanoid robotics as a strategic industry. In 2024 alone, central government support topped $20 billion, with additional city-level robotics funds in Beijing and Shanghai. According to Reuters, state procurement of humanoid robots rose from RMB 4.7 million in 2023 to over RMB 214 million in 2024. Chinese startups such as AgiBot, MagicLab, EngineAI, Unitree and UBTech are leading deployments into public service and manufacturing. UBTech's Walker S2 became the world's first humanoid to autonomously swap its own battery and operate 24/7 without human breaks. What sectors are Chinese humanoids targeting? Deployment is most advanced in: Manufacturing: Robots are already assisting in automotive plants (BYD, Geely, FAW-Volkswagen) Logistics and electronics: Pilots by MagicLab and AgiBot are underway Elder-care and home services: Projects by Ant Lingbo (Ant Group) and Tencent's Robotics X Lab are testing use cases for caregiving and companionship How does the global humanoid robot market compare? According to China Briefing, China's humanoid market is expected to grow from $380 million in 2024 to $10.3 billion by 2029, capturing nearly a third of global market share. Global forecasts: Markets and Markets: From $2.03 billion in 2024 to $13.25 billion in 2029 Goldman Sachs: $38 billion market potential by 2035, shipping 1.4 million units Morgan Stanley reports that 61 per cent of all humanoid models unveiled between 2022 and 2025 originated in China. What's the status of Elon Musk's Tesla Optimus? Tesla's Optimus project has shown promise but faces hurdles. Despite Musk's projection of 10,000 units by 2025, production halted after just 1,000 due to technical issues like overheating joints. Optimus leads in AI 'brain' capabilities, but China dominates in physical manufacturing and cost efficiency. Why are humanoids seen as a strategic priority? Humanoid robots are increasingly viewed as solutions to workforce shortages, rising labour costs, and demographic decline. They are being positioned as the next big economic engine — akin to PCs, smartphones, and electric vehicles. How are other countries responding? South Korea: Launched the K-Humanoid Alliance in April 2025, targeting deployment by 2028 Japan: Though a pioneer in humanoid robotics, it is slower in scaling up newer models Europe and the US: Maintain software and AI leadership but lag in hardware volume and affordability Analysts widely believe China may reach commercial-scale humanoid deployment before its Western rivals — thanks to strong state backing and superior supply-chain integration.

NABARD sees credit potential of ₹4.46 lakh crore for Karnataka in FY26
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) forecast a credit potential of ₹4.46 lakh crore for Karnataka for the financial year 2025–26, aligning closely with State-Level Bankers' Committee's annual credit plan of ₹4.38 lakh crore, said Surendra Babu, chief general manager, Karnataka Regional Office, here on Tuesday. Speaking at NABARD's 44th Foundation Day event held here, he said NABARD's total business operations, since its inception, in the State reached an all-time high of ₹27,846 crore, which included ₹21,442 crore in refinance assistance to banks and cooperative institutions, ₹4,974 crore in infrastructure finance to the State government, and ₹1,431 crore in direct refinance to district central cooperative banks. According to him, this year, ₹4,500 crore was sanctioned to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board for developing industrial parks in the State, which are expected to generate employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for nearly 60,000 rural youth and women. Elaborating on NABARD's digital outreach and financial inclusion efforts, he said, over 4,200 micro-ATMs were deployed to enhance last-mile banking access. Some ₹3.08 crore was sanctioned to the Karnataka Gramin Bank to develop connectivity infrastructure in underserved areas. NABARD released a booklet titled 'Success Stories of FPOs in Karnataka', which documented the inspiring journeys of farmer-producer organisations across the State. The booklet showcases how small and marginal farmers have successfully come together to access markets, add value to their produce, embrace digital platforms, and establish inclusive and resilient business models. NABARD has played a key role in supporting sustainable agriculture, developing secondary agriculture, creating value addition and in the development of rural infrastructure in Karnataka, acknowledged Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, she urged farmers in the State to make full use of NABARD's schemes and become entrepreneurs. Elaborating on value addition, the Chief Secretary said, instead of selling mangoes as raw produce, farmers should process them into various products and sell them. Recently, the price of Totapuri mango variety crashed, and if mango farmers set up small processing units in their villages, they would be able to earn income round the year, she said.
