Amit Shah says English speakers will ‘soon feel ashamed' in India
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader also claimed that 'our culture, our history and our religion cannot be understood in foreign languages'.
'A complete India cannot be imagined with aadhi-adhuri [incomplete] foreign languages, that can only happen with Indianness, with Indian languages,' Shah reportedly said at a book launch event in New Delhi.
He also called Indian languages 'jewels of our culture', adding that without them, 'we cease to be Indians'.
On June 6, Shah launched the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag, or Indian Languages Section. This initiative aims to create an organised platform for all Indian languages, intending to 'free the administration from the influence of foreign languages'.
The home minister's comments on Thursday come against the backdrop of several state governments and regional parties accusing the Centre of imposing Hindi through the National Education Policy's three-language formula.
On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government issued an order making Hindi a 'generally' taught third language for students from Class 1 to Class 5 in Marathi and English medium schools.
Marathi language advocates criticised the move, accusing the government of reintroducing the three-language formula through the 'backdoor'.
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have also seen protests against the alleged Hindi imposition.
Tamil Nadu has repeatedly opposed the three-language formula in the National Education Policy. The state government said it would not change its decades-old two-language policy of teaching students Tamil and English.
However, the Union government has maintained that it is committed to promoting ' all Indian languages ', The Hindu reported. During the Budget session, Shah had told the Rajya Sabha that his ministry would communicate with states in their respective languages, the newspaper reported.

Amidst reports of targeting of migrant workers from West Bengal in BJP-ruled States, the West Bengal police have started a helpline number for workers to seek assistance. Responding to the development, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari shared his email-id and added that any citizen of the State who is 'harassed by Mamata's police' may reach out to him. The West Bengal police in a social media post stated that they are receiving 'reports from various sources that many people from Bengal, who have gone to work in other states, are facing various problems and instances of harassment'. 'If any citizen from Bengal working in another state faces any kind of trouble, we appeal to them or their family members to immediately inform their local police station. You may also contact the district control room,' the police said in the post. The West Bengal police in the social media post said that the helpline number is 9147727666 which will be available only on WhatsApp and the people can send a message there with the necessary information, including your name and address. 'Each piece of information will be verified, and we will coordinate with the concerned state authorities to take the necessary action,' the police said. According to West Bengal Chief Minister about 1000 migrants from the State were detained in other States. There have been reports of detention of migrant workers in BJP ruled states on allegations of being Bangladeshi nationals. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called the post by West Bengal police politically motivated to mislead Bengalis residing in various parts of India for work, so that they become alarmed and confused. Ministers getting ‘picture perfect'for their show of strength in UP
Lucknow: Senior ministers from the state these days have developed a penchant for showing their strength through pictures and videos of events and meetings. Most of these visuals are leaked as they are not sent through official channels. Whether the event is political or apolitical, the message of the show of strength is loud and clear. The latest such show of strength came from the minister of jail, Dara Singh Chauhan. The occasion was his birthday celebration at Indira Gandhi Pratisthan on Friday. The event, named 'Sankalp Diwas', was largely attended by members of Dara Singh's caste members – Nonia Chauhans. However, the chief guests for the event were the two deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with BJP UP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary. It was purely the choice of Chauhan as to who would attend the event, but there were discussions around who all were not invited. The trio came together at the event and urged those present to "repeat 2017 results in 2027 Assembly polls". This line that caught the attention of political observers was also part of the caption of the photographs shared after the meeting of Keshav Maurya with Union home minister Amit Shah on July 8. Maurya's meeting with Shah was followed by his meeting with defence minister Rajnath Singh on July 9 and UP governor Anandiben Patel on July 11. After Maurya, pictures of Brajesh Pathak meeting Shah on July 17 also went viral. Visibly fed up with people confronting him about the poor situation in the power department during his visits to various places, Sharma, in a leaked video, is seen going harsh on officials for being paper tigers rather than looking at the reality at ground level. If the officers think that the minister does not have the power to transfer or suspend, they should understand that if I use sudarshan chakra like Lord Krishna did, no one — from Delhi to Rashtrapati Bhavan — will be able to save you," Sharma warned the officials. A few days back, even former MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh made a visit to 5 Kalidas Marg, the official residence of CM Yogi Adityanath. His meeting with the CM was held after a gap of 31 months, he claimed. The next day, Keshav Maurya hosted Brij Bhushan's son Prateek Bhushan at his official 7 Kalidas Marg residence. More than the pictures and videos, their timing has intrigued political pundits. Senior journalist Ratan Mani Lal said that such posturing has begun as it's well-known that there would be changes in the organisation and the ministries, both in the Centre and the state. "Since these leaders have smelled the forthcoming changes, they are leaving no stone unturned to present their case before the senior leaders and the community they represent," he said.
