Bangladesh pushes solar to tackle energy woes
DHAKA: Bangladesh's caretaker leader has ordered all government institutions including ministry buildings and schools to install solar panels to ease chronic power problems in a country regularly hit by deadly heatwaves.
The South Asian nation of 170 million people has set itself a target of generating 20 percent of its power from renewable energy by 2030 — a four-fold increase — and rising to 30 percent by 2040, the government said in a statement.
'Bangladesh is lagging far behind its neighboring countries,' the statement issued by the office of interim leader Muhammad Yunus read.
'Only 5.6 percent of our total requirement is currently met from renewable sources,' it added, noting that in neighboring India, it is 24 percent and in Sri Lanka, nearly 40 percent.
The government's rooftop solar program will see all government offices, schools, colleges and hospitals installed with panels immediately, the statement issued late Thursday said.
The micro-finance pioneer said the panels would be installed and operated by private sector companies, unlike the largely failed push by since-ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to install panels by using government power agencies.
'The private sector will handle overall maintenance and keep the systems operational for their own business interests,' the statement said.
'The government will only provide them with rooftop access.'
The government has also initiated tender processes for 55 solar power plants with a total 5,238 megawatts capacity.
Bangladesh relies heavily on importing cross-border power from neighboring India, as well from Nepal, especially when demand soars during the blistering heat when consumers rely on energy-hungry air conditioners to keep cool.
Dhaka also began construction of the Russia-backed nuclear plant at Rooppur in 2017.
The much-delayed 2,400-megawatt project will be Bangladesh's largest power station by generating capacity once fully operational.

'The presence of cadets from Bahrain, Iraq, the State of Palestine, the Republic of Djibouti and the Republic of Türkiye in today's commissioning parade is a reflection of the Academy's high training standards,' he added. Pakistan regularly trains cadets and officers from partner nations and sends its own officers abroad to institutions in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom for advanced military education and joint training. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from Pakistan and other countries, government representatives and families of the graduating cadets. In his remarks, the army chief also praised the Navy's professionalism and its efforts as a regional maritime force committed to securing international sea lines of communication. He also referenced the recent standoff with India, saying the country's armed forces had 'responded swiftly and decisively against a numerically superior enemy,' and were fully prepared to defend Pakistan's sovereignty.

Armenia Arrests Another Top Cleric Over an Alleged Coup Plot
Armenia has arrested a second prominent cleric on charges of plotting against the government – the latest escalation in a clampdown on outspoken critics of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. A court in Yerevan on Saturday ordered Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan to be held in pre-trial detention for two months, his lawyer Ara Zohrabyan said. He said the decision was 'obviously illegal and unfounded,' saying his client will appeal. State prosecutors accuse Ajapahyan of publicly calling for an armed ouster of the government. On Friday, security forces faced off with crowds at the headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church outside Yerevan as they tried to arrest Ajapahyan. Videos circulating on social media showed clergymen jostling with police while bells of a nearby cathedral rang out. After Armenia's National Security Service urged Ajapahyan to appear before authorities, local media showed him entering the building of Armenia's Investigative Committee in his gray robes. 'I have never hidden and I am not going to hide now,' Ajapahyan told reporters on Friday. 'I say that what is happening now is lawlessness. I have never been and am not a threat to this country; the main threat is in the government.' Last year, tens of thousands of demonstrators called for Pashinyan's ouster after Armenia agreed to hand over control of several border villages to Azerbaijan and to normalize relations between the neighbors and bitter rivals. On Wednesday, authorities arrested Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, who leads the Sacred Struggle opposition movement. He was accused of plotting a sabotage campaign to overthrow Pashinyan – charges that his lawyer rejected as 'fiction.' Members of Sacred Struggle, which has bitterly opposed the handover of the border villages, accused the government of cracking down on political rights. Although the territorial concession was the movement's core issue, it has expanded to a wide array of complaints about Pashinyan, who came to power in 2018. Another vocal critic of Pashinyan, Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, was arrested last week on charges of calling for the government's overthrow, which he denied. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in territorial disputes since the early 1990s as various parts of the Soviet Union pressed for independence from Moscow. After the USSR collapsed in 1991, ethnic Armenian separatist forces backed by the Armenian military won control of Azerbaijan's region of Karabakh and nearby territories. In 2020, Azerbaijan recaptured broad swaths of territory that were held for nearly three decades by Armenian forces. A lightning military campaign in September 2023 saw Azerbaijan fully reclaim control of Karabakh, and Armenia later handed over the border villages. Pashinyan has recently sought to normalize relations with Azerbaijan. Last week, he also visited Azerbaijan's top ally, Turkey, to mend a historic rift. Pakistan plans to finalize Roosevelt Hotel privatization structure at next cabinet committee meeting
KARACHI: Pakistan is expected to finalize the transaction structure for the privatization of the Roosevelt Hotel in New York at the next meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Privatization, the government said in a statement on Saturday. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the hotel is owned by Pakistan International Airlines Investment Limited (PIAIL) and occupies a full city block on Madison Avenue and 45th Street. It has also remained one of Pakistan's most high-profile yet politically sensitive overseas assets. 'The base price and expected proceeds from the privatization of the Roosevelt Hotel will depend on the transaction structure and final terms approved by the government,' the Privatization Commission said in an official handout. 'The transaction structure is expected to be finalized at the next meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Privatization.' The statement informed no base price had yet been set for the property, rebutting some local media reports that claimed the government had fixed a $100 million floor. It also pointed out such a value could only be determined at the time of bidding, adding that the deal's potential value would depend on the transaction structure and final terms approved by the cabinet committee. Over the past two decades, successive Pakistani governments have floated plans to sell, lease or redevelop the property, but no proposal has advanced beyond early-stage planning. Earlier this month, Muhammad Ali, the prime minister's adviser on privatization, told Arab News that the government had completed the hotel's baseline valuation and appointed US-based consultancy JLL to conduct market sounding. 'We just need to get approval from the cabinet committee on the structure, and we'll move ahead,' he said.
