Archaeological Survey of India
(ASI) has completed the repair work of the
Puri Jagannath temple
's Ratna Bhandar or treasury, and inventory-related work will begin after approval of the state government, an official said.
The announcement was made by

's Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee and ASI's Superintending Archaeologist DB Garnayak at a press conference on Monday.
ASI is the custodian of the 12th-century shrine in the seaside town.

"By the infinite grace of the Lord, the conservation and renovation work of the Ratna Bhandar, both outer and inner, has been completed today," Padhee said.
The outer chamber is regularly used to store and retrieve ornaments for rituals and festivals. The most valuable ornaments made of gold and diamond are kept in the inner chamber, which has not been opened for 46 years due to concerns about its structural integrity.

Last year, the inner chamber was reopened for the repair of the structure and an inventory of the valuables in it.
"The conservation work was carried out by the ASI for about 333 hours over a period of 95 days. As many as 80 people worked to conserve the Lord's treasury," said Padhee, an IAS officer.
He said the works related to the inventory will begin only after the state government gives its permission.
The Jagannath temple in Puri functions under the Law Department of the state government.
Jewellery and other precious items stored in iron chests and almirahs had been shifted to temporary strong rooms inside the temple in two phases in July last year when the Ratna Bhandar was reopened after four decades.
The valuables will be taken inside the Ratna Bhandar soon since the repair is now complete, Padhee said.
The last inventory was done in 1978.
According to that inventory, the temple has 128 kg of gold and over 200 kg of silver, temple sources said, adding that some of the ornaments have gold coatings and those could not be weighed at that time.
Padhee said the repair and conservation works were carried out as per the state government's prescribed guidelines.
"By the grace of the lord, the repair work was completed before Niladri Bije of deities on July 8," he said.
'Niladri Bije' refers to the return of the sibling deities - Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and
Lord Jagannath
- to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, marking the conclusion of the Rath Yatra festival.
Though the Ratna Bhandar was reopened in July last year, the repair and conservation work began in December after a thorough survey.
ASI's Garnayak said a total of 520 damaged stone blocks and a corbel arch were changed in the inner and outer chambers of the Ratna Bhandar.
"These are the major stone blocks from the exterior and interior side walls of both chambers of Ratna Bhandar, which had deteriorated over the years. Now, granite stones have been fitted on the floor," he said.
"This apart, 15 damaged beams in the structure have been replaced with stainless steel beams, both big and small. The renovation works have been done entirely in the traditional dry masonry method," he added.

Bilingual sections in over 4k Karnataka schools approved for academic year 2025-26
Bengaluru: With an overwhelming demand for English medium, the department of school education and literacy has announced the opening of bilingual sections — English medium along with the existing Kannada medium — in 4,134 schools across the state. Of the total 1,465 govt schools in Bangalore North and Bangalore South, 1,103 have been given permission to start the sections. There are 730 schools in Bangalore South and 373 in Bangalore North from class 1. As many as 11,555 potential schools applied from 33 educational districts. The first 15 schools from each taluk with the highest student enrolment were selected. English-medium sections started under the HD Kumaraswamy regime in 2019-20. Since then, 2,405 schools have had English-medium sections, including Karnataka Public Schools. In 2024-25, 2,000 govt schools were permitted to open the new sections. The first batch is in class 7 now. The teachers will be trained by the department of state educational, research and training and the Regional Institute of English before the commencement of classes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo "Admissions are ongoing. Since many of the schools knew they were likely to get permission, they already got ready for it and started enrolling students. Since class 1 is the Nali Kali system, the children will not need textbooks," said a senior official. However, educationists warned that the last-minute plans shouldn't affect the training of teachers. "Many English teachers in govt schools aren't specialists in English. They often face challenges related to fluency, confidence, and effective methods of teaching English. Teacher training and teacher mentoring are important in order to upskill teachers, to sensitise them towards curriculum changes, pedagogical and technological innovations, and help them update their knowledge and teaching practices," said a teacher trainer. "Most guest teachers aren't trained in English-medium sections. This is because every year, new teachers are appointed and there are no budget provisions for involving guest teachers in training programmes. Even if they are called for training, they aren't given training material, food, or travel allowance. I hope this time there will be a change," he added.

Efforts on to get GI tag for Prayagraj's Sonachur & Vishnu Bhog rice varieties
Prayagraj: Even though overall production and availability of paddy seeds remain adequate in Prayagraj, the same cannot be said for once-celebrated aromatic rice varieties Sonachur and Vishnu Bhog. Once widely grown and cherished across eastern Uttar Pradesh, these traditional rice types are now on the verge of extinction, largely overshadowed by hybrid varieties that dominate the agricultural landscape today. In a significant move aimed at reviving these disappearing rice varieties, the agriculture department has initiated a comprehensive campaign focused on farmers in the Shankargarh, Koraon, and Jasra regions—areas known for cultivating premium quality normal, hybrid and aromatic rice. Moreover, under this initiative, Geographical Indication (GI) tagging of both Sonachur and Vishnu Bhog rice will be undertaken, marking them under the identity of Prayagraj, with the goal of preserving and possibly exporting them in the future. Rice is cultivated in approximately 1.70 lakh hectares across the Gangapar and Yamunapar regions of Prayagraj. While normal, hybrid, and aromatic—are grown by farmers, Sonachur and Vishnu Bhog from the aromatic category are now rarely seen in fields. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo At one time, they were a defining symbol of Prayagraj's agricultural heritage. However, their cultivation dwindled to a mere 100 to 150 hectares due to declining demand and low market incentives. Despite being priced significantly higher than normal rice due to their fragrance and quality, the cost of production remains similar. The yield, however, is lower, making it a less attractive option for farmers focused on profitability. One of the farmers, Santosh Kumar Dwivedi, said, "The sale of fine and aromatic rice like Sonachur is less compared to coarse varieties. The cost of cultivation is high, and the yield doesn't match it. That's why we only grow it for our household consumption." Similarly, Neeraj Kumar says, "Sonachur and Vishnu Bhog require more water and care. With low demand and low returns, fewer farmers are willing to grow them. However, if we start getting better prices, the cultivation can definitely increase again." The agriculture department, under leadership of deputy director Pawan Kumar Vishwakarma, is currently identifying regions where these varieties are cultivated. This is essential for achieving GI tagging, which would authenticate the unique identity of these rice types as Prayagraj's own and could potentially open international markets. "If export possibilities materialise, farmers will be encouraged to return to cultivating Sonachur and Vishnu Bhog, ensuring both fair returns and the preservation of these varieties," said Vishwakarma.
