Repair works of Ratna Bhandar completed: ASI

Puri: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri on Monday announced that the ASI has completed repair of the 12th century shrine's 'Ratna Bhandar' (treasury) and inventory-related work will begin after approval of the State government. This was announced at a joint press briefing by SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee and Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) Superintending Archaeologist D B Garnayak here. The ASI is the custodian of the 65-metre-tall imposing temple in the seaside town. 'By the infinite grace of the Lord, the conservation and renovation work of the Ratna Bhandar, both outer and inner, has been completed today,' Padhee told reporters. The outer chamber is regularly used to store and retrieve ornaments for daily rituals and festivals. The most valuable ornaments made of gold and diamond are kept in the inner chamber, which had not been opened for 46 years due to concerns about its structural integrity and the need for repairs. The inner chamber of the Ratna Bhandar was reopened in 2024 for an inventory of valuables and the repair of its structure. The conservation work was carried out by the ASI for about 333 hours over a period of 95 days. As many as 80 people worked to conserve the Lord's treasury, said Padhee. About the inventory of valuables in the Ratna Bhandar, Padhee said the works related to it will begin only after the permission of the State government. The Jagannath temple in Puri functions under the Law department of the Odisha government. Jewellery and other precious items stored in iron chests and almirahs were shifted to temporary strong rooms inside the temple in two phases in July last year when the Ratna Bhandar was reopened after four decades. The valuables will be taken inside the Ratna Bhandar shortly, since the repair is now complete, the SJTA Chief Administrator said. The last inventory of the Ratna Bhandar was prepared in 1978. Padhee said the repair and conservation works were carried out as per the State government's prescribed guidelines. 'By the grace of the Lord, the repair work was completed before Niladri Bije of deities on July 8,' he said. 'Niladri Bije' refers to the return of the sibling deities - Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath - to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, markingconclusion of the Rath Yatra festival.

Now, granite stones have been fitted on the floor," he said. "This apart, 15 damaged beams in the structure have been replaced with stainless steel beams, both big and small. The renovation works have been done entirely in the traditional dry masonry method," he added. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Rs 25k reward from govt for helping accident victims

Bhubaneswar: The state govt released guidelines on Monday for implementing the Centre's newly-launched 'Rah-Veer' scheme, which rewards persons with Rs 25,000 for helping save serious accident victims. "District-level appraisal sub-committees will be constituted to approve eligible Rah-Veers (good samaritans). These committees will be headed by the collector, with SP/DCP, chief district medical officer and regional transport officer serving as members," read a letter by transport secretary Usha Padhee to all district collectors. As per the guidelines, the collector must upload the beneficiary's details, including Aadhaar and bank account numbers, to the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) platform for reward disbursement. "When citizens transport critically injured persons directly to hospitals, medical staff will alert police, who will inform the district collector. The helper will receive a report copy, and the govt will transfer the reward directly to the beneficiary's account," the guideline read. Padhee has instructed all collectors to promote the scheme, whose prime aim is to encourage people to render assistance to road accident victims in emergency situations and save their lives by shifting them to nearby hospital. As per Padhee's letter, the scheme includes a provision where any citizen, who takes a critical accident victim to the hospital within the crucial "golden hour" and saves their life will be rewarded with Rs 25,000. For saving one or more victims in a single accident, a Rah-Veer receives Rs 25,000. Multiple helpers for a single victim will share the Rs 25,000 equally. Annually, 10 Rah-Veers will be selected nationally for Rs 1 lakh awards. Individual Rah-Veers can receive up to five rewards annually. Collectors have been asked to submit action taken reports by July 20. The transport department said that Rah-Veer is an enhanced version of the previous 'Good Samaritan' scheme, which offered Rs 5,000 to individuals who assisted accident victims. Under section 134 A of the motor vehicle amendment Act 2019, good Samaritan rules were notified by the ministry of road transport and highways on Sept 29, 2020. These rules protect good samaritans from potential police harassment when helping accident victims.

No theft of ‘modak' from Puri temple

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan clarified that there was no theft of 'modak' from the Jagannath temple in Puri as alleged by a section of servitors. 'Modak' is a special type of 'ladoo' offered to the deities of the temple as part of one of the rituals ahead of the Rath Yatra festival. 'There was no theft of 'modak' from the temple as per the information given by Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief administrator Arabinda Padhee,' the minister said on Tuesday. As the controversy surfaced, Padhee ordered an inquiry by the SJTA officials which found that there was no theft of 'modak'. A group of 'Vaidya sevak' (Ayurvedic doctors) supply 'modak' to the temple during the Lord's 'Anasar' period when it was believed that the deities fell ill. It is also believed that the deities get cured after having 'modak'. The controversy began when Haladhar Das Mohapatra, the 'Badagrahi' (bodyguard) of Lord Balabhadra, claimed that 70 out of 313 'modaks' stored under tight security were missing. As the 'modak' was stolen, its sanctity was lost. He lodged a formal complaint with SJTA. Talking to reporters, Padhee also rejected the allegations of theft.
