Bhubaneswar: Hydroponic marijuana from Thailand, considered 'poor man's cocaine', has become a preferred choice for rave parties in Bhubaneswar due to its affordability and cocaine-like hallucinogenic effect, according to Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers.
DRI sleuths caught four flyers from Bangkok at the city airport with a total of 40kg of hydroponic marijuana on July 29 and Saturday. DRI officers said the hydroponic variant, which is grown without soil, contains 30% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) compared to 3% in regular marijuana. "The elevated THC content produces cocaine-like hallucinogenic effects, making it particularly attractive to party-goers. We are concerned about the growing trend and have intensified surveillance to curb its distribution in the city," a senior DRI officer told TOI on the condition of anonymity.
DRI sleuths plan to bring the four arrested carriers on remand so that they can interrogate the accused and obtain details about their Odisha conduit, peddlers and the modus operandi being followed to distribute the drugs to consumers.
"We have identified some persons in the Laxmi Sagar area, and they have a network of peddlers. Regarding places in Bangkok where the marijuana is processed, we have overseas personnel who are on the job to trace those locations.
There should be awareness among people about the health hazards of the hydroponic marijuana that is available for use in parties. We will also take local help to catch small-time peddlers," the DRI officer added.
The agency, through police assistance, may keep a watch on parties.
Officers also said that whenever marijuana smuggling was detected in airports and other places in the recent past, its origin was traced to Bangkok. Passengers carrying the contraband managed to escape mechanical scanners and security personnel in Thailand. "Whether the handlers in Bangkok are in collusion with airport staff there is not yet ascertained," he said.
From interrogation of the accused,, it will also be ascertained who the main traders in Bangkok and Bhubaneswar are and which hotels they mostly prefer to stay in.

Cemetery linked to Alluri's legacy faces fresh threats

Visakhapatnam: The archaeological site in Narsipatnam town in Anakapalli district has allegedly been encroached upon by a few individuals who are constructing commercial structures on the site, even though there is a court stay order for its protection. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 46 cents of land was earmarked for a cemetery of British officers Scot Coward and Hyter, who were killed by the followers of revolutionary Alluri Sitarama Raju during the 1920s. However, the small piece of land remained untouched by the authorities until a decade ago, except for a few shops that came up on the land. Those shops were removed by the authorities when there was a proposal to widen the road. Now, a few individuals have again started construction on the same land, prompting the Alluri Sitarama Raju Memorial Committee to file a petition with the legal services authority to protect the land. Justice Shiaz Khan also visited the site 15 days ago and instructed the revenue, municipality, and archaeology departments to protect the land. However, the alleged apathy of the authorities has given room for the encroachers to raise the structures. Interestingly, both British officers, Coward and Hyter, participated in World War I and were hailed by the British Army as fearless warriors. They were deployed to suppress the Manyam Pituri (tribal rebellion or Rampa rebellion) and were killed by the followers of Sitarama Raju at Damanapalli Ghat Road on September 24, 1922. To bring their bodies to the Narsipatnam R and B Bungalow area, the then British collector Rutherford allegedly paid tax to Alluri Sitarama Raju, as there was no way to bring the bodies without the rebels' permission. He cremated the bodies at the present site in survey no. 9, imposing a curfew in the entire 20 km area due to the decomposed state of the bodies and the fear of spreading plague. The 100-year-old history lies in that cemetery, and the site is on one side of the main road in Narsipatnam town. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Now, the 46 cents of land have shrunk to only 19 cents due to encroachments and occupations. Even after the visit of Justice Khan, private individuals have started constructing shops, and municipal authorities have allegedly not taken any action to date. The assistant director of the archeology department R Phalguna Rao, told TOI that he met with the district collector Vijaya Krishnan, who asked him to meet Narsipatnam RDO for further action. "The graves of the British officers are part of the history of Alluri Sitarama Raju's fight against the British. The cemetery is a witness to Alluri's revolutionary movement in the area. Unfortunately, authorities are neglecting the history. The site should be handed over to the archaeology department to protect the century-old history," the Alluri Sitarama Raju Memorial Committee representative, PV Satyanarayana, told TOI. "Now, the authorities are saying that only 19 cents out of 46 cents will be handed over to the archaeology department. Revenue officials should protect the govt lands, but they are saying this, which is improper on their part," he alleged.

Mumbai court grants bail to high-end furniture businessman in Rs 30 crore customs duty evasion case

Mumbai: The Mumbai metropolitan magistrate court on Saturday granted bail to Falgun Shroff, a key accused in the Rs 30 crore customs duty evasion racket unearthed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Shroff, the owner of Di Lusso Furniture LLP, was arrested on July 20 for allegedly importing high-end Italian luxury furniture by grossly undervaluing goods and evading customs duties. While granting bail, the court observed that Shroff had no prior criminal antecedents and cooperated with the investigation. The court noted that the DRI had already seized all documentary and electronic evidence, including emails, account books, and devices, during searches at Shroff's office and residence. The accused also deposited Rs 5 crore towards duty payment and expressed willingness to pay more, without admitting any liability, although his bank accounts are currently frozen, argued his advocate Sujay Kantawala. The court directed Shroff to be released on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh with sureties and imposed strict conditions prohibiting him from tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses. The court remarked that further custodial interrogation was not necessary at this stage as the investigation into past imports will take considerable time. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai DRI officials alleged that Shroff, along with co-accused Sambhaji Bhosale and Manoj Rai, imported premium furniture brands like Poltrona Frau, Fendi, and Minotti using shell companies and dummy Importer Exporter Codes (IECs). The syndicate allegedly fabricated invoices through front firms in Dubai and Singapore to undervalue imports, thereby suppressing customs duty liabilities. All three were released on bail. Officials said the racket has international ramifications and more arrests are likely as several dummy companies and overseas collaborators remain under the scanner.
