Stingers' plan to back up their Olympic silver medal
The Stingers claimed silver at the 2024 Paris Games, falling 11-9 to Spain in the final, and hope to springboard from that to a medal at the world aquatic championships, also featuring swimming and diving, which run from July 11-24.
The Australian women haven't won a world championship medal since 2019 in South Korea, when they downed Hungary to win bronze.
They just missed out in Fukuoka, Japan in 2023, losing the bronze medal play-off against Italy, while they placed sixth in 2024.
Water Polo Australia on Monday named a world championship squad that features 10 players who were part of the Paris campaign, expecting the team to capitalise on that Olympic experience.
Almost one year on, coach Bec Rippon said it was great to have the majority of the team back together, although veteran skipper Zoe Arancini was a notable omission.
"It is nice having some of the Paris group back and to now see how they connect with the newer players that have been working hard in Australia and overseas," Rippon said.
"They bring with them some great experience and energy, as we approach the new Olympic cycle," she said.
Currently in camp on the Gold Coast for three weeks, the Stingers next head to Perth, where they will host the USA, who are reigning world champions, and Italy for a training camp and official Test matches.
"It's going to be a great opportunity to trial some new things that we've been working on, and to try things without being under the same pressure of being at a world championships," Rippon said.
"We will play the Italians at the world championships, so it will be a really good chance to check in and measure up against each other before Singapore."

Broncos legend rejects claim about Reece Walsh in pointed swipe at two teammates
Corey Parker has rejected suggestions Reece Walsh was solely to blame for the Broncos' loss to Parramatta on Friday night, saying the club's veteran leaders should bear the brunt of the backlash. He's the captain, and he plays a real pivotal position. "Then you've got Ben Hunt at No.9 with just shy of 350 games. So between those two individuals you've got a collective 651 games between them. We hear so often when the Broncos win or don't win, it's either Reece Walsh has had an ordinary game or Reece Walsh has had a great game. [But] experience in big games and pivotal moments is paramount." Parker pointed out some of the leaders at other clubs who make sure their teammates are held accountable. He added: "You look at the team atop the competition - the Canberra Raiders - wonderful leaders in their football side that don't deviate. Jamal Fogarty has plenty of youth in his team - Xavier Savage and Kaeo Weekes - but he does not deviate from what is required. Kicks to the corners really well and steers his team around the park when they start to get a little shaky. "I want to see the leaders of the Broncos really stand up over the next four or five weeks, and if they can do that, what flows off the back of it will certainly be warranted. Parker said the Broncos may have suffered from having the bye in Round 20, which halted their momentum and eventually saw a six-game losing streak snapped. USA Swimming confirms stomach bug impacting team at worlds
USA Swimming has confirmed reports that some team members competing in the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore were recovering from acute gastroenteritis, US public broadcaster NPR reported. USA Swimming senior communications director Nikki Warner said in a statement cited by NPR that "those experiencing symptoms" were receiving treatment, without saying which swimmers were affected or how they got sick. The team's medical staff was also "advising the team on further preventative and recovery measures," Warner added. The team is "planning to race and perform to the best of our ability for the rest of the meet," Warner said, according to NPR.
