Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone set to transform all 10 Johor districts, says Menteri Besar
Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the benefits of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone would not only be concentrated in Johor Bahru.
KLUANG - The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) will not only benefit Johor Bahru but also other districts like Kluang, said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
He stated that the rapid and ongoing developments indicate that
the JS-SEZ will benefit all 10 districts of the state.
'Do not think that the benefits of the JS-SEZ will only be concentrated in the Johor Bahru area.
'All 10 districts in Johor stand to benefit from it because of all the ongoing developments taking place throughout the state, such as transportation infrastructure, housing projects and tourism,' Datuk Onn Hafiz said at a community event in Renggam, Kluang, on July 6.
He said the double-track rail system, which is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025 , and the
Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link , which was expected to begin operating on Jan 1, 2027, are projects that would shorten people's travel time.
He also pointed out that the completion of the projects could help elevate towns like Layang-Layang, Renggam, and Kluang into satellite towns to Johor Bahru. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

"It's a worrying disappearance and we are in contact with the family," Laurent Saint-Martin, who is also trade minister, told RTL radio. "It is worrying because Iran has a deliberate policy of taking Western hostages," he added. French media reported that the man was an 18-year-old who had been on a cycling trip in the region but went missing a few days after Israeli planes struck targets in Iran. BANGKOK - Thailand has submitted a new trade proposal to the United States, offering to cut levies to zero on many US imports in a bid to avoid steep tariff hikes on its own products, the finance minister said on July 7. Washington has threatened to impose a 36 per cent levy on Thai imports if no reduction is negotiated before July 9, when a 90-day pause capping tariffs at a baseline of 10 per cent for most nations expires. The United States accounted for 18.3 per cent of Thailand's shipments in 2024, amounting to US$54.96 (S$70.2 billion) billion in value, making it Thailand's biggest export market. Washington says its deficit with Thailand stood at US$45.6 billion. 'We heard their feedback and what they were especially interested in, and we adjusted it (the trade proposal),' minister Pichai Chunhavajira told reporters, who returned from Washington last week following talks. The US Trade Representative's office praised Thailand's efforts but suggested minor adjustments, Mr Pichai said. He said the improved proposal includes zero tariffs on many US imports and other measures that aim to bring trade with the United States into balance in less than 10 years, sooner than earlier proposed. It also includes commitments to increase imports of American goods to boost bilateral trade. 'It's not just about reducing tariffs but also about opening up trade further,' he said. 'In my view, the conditions we have proposed are very favourable and should satisfy them,' he added. Trade talks are expected to continue after the tariff pause ends, as negotiating trade terms requires consultations among multiple stakeholders, Mr Pichai said. Thailand's top three exports to the United States in 2024 were computers, teleprinters and telephone sets, and rubber products. Its top three imports from the US were crude oil, machinery and parts, and chemicals. Mr Pichai said earlier that Thailand would import more US natural gas and cut tariffs on imports of corn from the United States. US corn is subject to a 73 per cent import tax, according to the Thai Feed Mill Association. The Thai state-owned energy giant, PTT Group in June signed an agreement to procure 2 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year from Glenfarne's Alaska LNG project over a 20-year term. The US$44 billion project has been championed by US President Donald Trump. Mr Pichai earlier said South-east Asia's second-largest economy could expand by just over 1 per cent in 2025 due to the impact of US tariffs. The Israeli escalation was seen by Lebanese officials and diplomats as an attempt to ratchet up pressure on Hezbollah, whose leader Naim Qassem said in a televised speech on Sunday that the group still needed arms to defend Lebanon from Israel. Hezbollah emerged badly damaged from a war with Israel last year that eliminated much of the group's leadership, killed thousands of its fighters and left tens of thousands of its supporters displaced from their destroyed homes. The group has been under pressure in recent months both within Lebanon and from Washington to completely relinquish its weapons. It is weighing shrinking its arsenal, sources told Reuters last week, without disarming in full. U.S. envoy Thomas Barrack's proposal, delivered to Lebanese officials during his last visit on June 19, would see Hezbollah fully disarmed within four months in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli troops occupying several posts in south Lebanon and a halt to Israeli air strikes. Lebanon formed a committee to draft a response. Hezbollah was expected to provide its own feedback to its ally, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, to incorporate into a counter-proposal being prepared in time for Barrack's Monday visit. The group did not make its response public, but two sources familiar with its deliberations said Hezbollah had told Berri it would not discuss giving up any more arms before Israeli troops fully left Lebanon and without guarantees Israel would stop targeting group members. Hezbollah had already relinquished a number of weapons depots in southern Lebanon to the Lebanese army in line with a U.S.-brokered truce that ended last year's war. The truce also stipulates that Israeli troops withdraw. Hezbollah has pointed to the troops' continued occupation of at least five posts in southern Lebanon as a main violation. REUTERS
