Lopez was just 21 in 1991 when she made her AMAs debut as a dancer behind New Kids on the Block. She first performed on the show as a star attraction in 2001. She first hosted the show in 2015. On Monday (May 26, Memorial Day), she will host again, becoming just the fourth music star to solo-host the AMAs twice, following Lionel Richie (1984-85), Diana Ross (1986-87) and Pitbull (2013-14).
Lopez is also set to perform on this year's show, along with Janet Jackson (who is set to receive the ICON Award), Rod Stewart (who is set to receive a lifetime achievement award), Benson Boone, Blake Shelton, Gloria Estefan, Gwen Stefani, Lainey Wilson and Reneé Rapp.
This year's show will be held at Fontainebleau Las Vegas, marking the first time the show has been held outside the Los Angeles area. It's the first regular AMAs broadcast since November 2022, and will mark the first regular AMAs broadcast on CBS. The show aired on ABC from 1974-2022.
Over the years, Lopez has performed on the AMAs in tandem with such diverse artists as Pitbull, will.i.am, Iggy Azalea and Maluma. Once, she performed three songs associated with Latin music legend Celia Cruz. Another time, she performed a dance medley of the previous year's biggest hits.
Here's a recap of Lopez's 10 previous American Music Awards performances.
The American Music Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Eldridge Industries and Billboard parent company Penske Media.
Date of Show: Jan. 28, 1991
Notes: Lopez performed behind New Kids, who sang 'Games,' their hard-edged rebuke to their detractors. With this single, the group changed its name to NKOTB in an effort to distance itself from its lightweight teen image. Flavor Flav joined them for the AMAs performance. J.Lo was a member of the dance troupe The Fly Girls on In Living Color at the time. In Living Colour star Keenen Ivory Wayans hosted the AMAs that year.Date of Show: Jan. 8, 2001
Notes: Ten years later, Lopez was back on the AMAs, but this time she was out front, in the star position. She opened the telecast with an elaborate production number built around 'Love Don't Cost a Thing,' the lead single from her sophomore album J.Lo. The sequence opens with a bit of 'Thank Heavens for Little Girls,' the French-sounding trifle from Gigi. Performing under a replica of the base of the Eiffel Tower, Lopez showcased tight dance moves and a very toned midsection. At the end of her performance, she broke into a smile. She knew she had done what she came to do. 'Love Don't Cost a Thing' reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. J.Lo became her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.Date of Show: Nov. 22, 2009
Notes: Lopez momentarily fell in the middle of her elaborately staged AMAs performance of 'Louboutins,' but she recovered so quickly that many viewers probably didn't even notice. The song was introduced as being from J.Lo's upcoming album Love? When that album finally appeared in 2011, this non-hit was nowhere to be found. 'Louboutins' was J.Lo's last release for Epic Records. She resurfaced two years later on Island Records with the hit 'On the Floor.'Date of Show: Nov. 20, 2011
Notes: J.Lo had two performance spots on the show. In the first, she performed a medley consisting of 'Until It Beats No More,' 'Papi' and 'On the Floor,' the latter featuring Pitbull; in the second, she performed 'T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)' with will.i.am.
The first spot opened with Lopez wearing a full gown and singing a dramatic ballad. It was much closer to Adele than J.Lo. It was also an elaborate fake-out. About 30 seconds in, she looked directly at the camera, smiled, ditched the gown and switched to a more suitable song. (Even more clothes came off before she ended the spot with 'On the Floor.')
'On the Floor' reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 in May 2011, becoming J.Lo's 10th and most recent top 10 hit. will.i.am's 'T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever),' featuring Mick Jagger and J.Lo, reached No. 36 in 2011. Jagger, who, like Lopez, has long been famous for his stage moves, did not appear on the AMAs, but the producers laid in video of him performing another song over his vocal parts.
Date of Show: Nov. 24, 2013
Notes: In tribute to the Cuban-born Queen of Salsa, who had died 10 years earlier at age 77, Lopez performed 'Químbara,' 'Carnaval' and 'Bemba Colorá.' Lopez was elegantly dressed and coiffed as the performance began. The gown had come off and the hair had come down by the end. This performance, in which she paid tribute to her Latin culture, was one of her most effective.Date of Show: Nov. 23, 2014
Notes: The two singers closed the show with this carnal celebration. Best moment: A dancer shows J.Lo a smartphone with a call coming in. She glances at it and dismisses it by saying, 'Booty call.' Azalea had topped the Hot 100 earlier in the year with 'Fancy,' her collab with Charli xcx. 'Booty,' which reached No. 18 on the Hot 100, was featured on Lopez's album A.K.A., her eighth album to make the top 10 on the Billboard 200.Date of Show: Nov. 22, 2015
Notes: Lopez performed her 1999 smash 'Waiting for Tonight' (which was her second top 10 hit on the Hot 100) and then dramatically stopped and said 'Wait! Don't clap. Tonight is not about me. Tonight is about the music – and this year's music made me want to dance.' She then danced to a medley of 'Uptown Funk,' 'Anaconda,' '7/11,' 'Feeling Myself,' 'The Hills,' 'Can't Feel My Face,' 'Girl Crush,' 'Bad Blood,' 'Trap Queen,' 'Hotline Bling,' 'Thinking Out Loud,' 'Love More,' 'Where Are Ü Now' and 'Bitch Better Have My Money.' The producers sprinkled in reaction shots from a few of the performers whose songs were included, namely Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, Little Big Town and Justin Bieber.Date of Show: Oct. 9, 2018
Notes: This power ballad was from the film in which Lopez starred, alongside Leah Remini, Vanessa Hudgens, Treat Williams and Milo Ventimiglia. Lopez also served as a producer on the film, which had the motivational tag line, 'The only thing stopping you…is you.'Date of Show: Nov. 22, 2020
Notes: J.Lo was joined by Colombian star Maluma for this bilingual performance of 'Pa'Ti' and 'Lonely.' 'Pa' Ti,' which translates to 'For You,' was later featured in J.Lo's pandemic-delayed 2022 film Marry Me, in which Maluma co-starred. 'Lonely' didn't make the cut.Date of Show: Nov. 21, 2021
Notes: Lopez performed this ballad, which gains in tempo as it proceeds, backed by scenes from the film, in which she starred with Owen Wilson, Maluma, John Bradley, Chloe Coleman and Sarah Silverman. Lopez also served as a producer of the film.Best of Billboard

AC/DC Invades The Billboard Charts With Multiple Comebacks

AC/DC returns to several Billboard charts as "Thunderstruck" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" ... More reappears on different rock rankings. Brian Johnson and Angus Young, both of the group AC/DC, film the 'Thunderstruck' music video, Brixton Academy, London, 8/17/1990. (Photo by) Some weeks are bigger than others for AC/DC on the Billboard charts, but the band never disappears completely. At times, attention is split across multiple albums, with interest divided between greatest hits collections and proper studio albums. In other instances, as is the case at the moment, American listeners are returning to the classic songs that turned the Australian outfit into global superstars decades ago. AC/DC regularly appears on rankings focused on both albums and songs, but this frame, multiple tunes return, and the group claims several hits in the largest music market on the planet. "Thunderstruck" Remains AC/DC's Sturdiest Hit "Thunderstruck" is, as is almost always the case, AC/DC's biggest hit in America right now. The track lives on a trio of U.S.-based Billboard rankings, as well as both of the company's global tallies. What has turned out to be AC/DC's most enduring smash reenters the Rock Digital Song Sales chart at No. 14 this week. Recently, "Thunderstruck" passed a decade as one of the top-selling rock tunes in the country, but despite that accomplishment, it has only ever climbed to No. 2 on the tally, coming tantalizingly close to the summit. 'Thunderstruck' Lives Close to No. 1 As "Thunderstruck" reenters the Rock Digital Song Sales tally, it also sits inside the upper reaches of both the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales and Hard Rock Streaming Songs rankings this frame. The cut slips from the throne on the sales roster, but only by one spot, while climbing one rung on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart to No. 3. "You Shook Me All Night Long" Returns "You Shook Me All Night Long" joins "Thunderstruck" as a comeback in America this frame. It narrowly manages to sneak back onto the Hard Rock Streaming Songs list, coming in at No. 24 on the 25-spot ranking of the most successful hard rock-only tracks in the country on platforms like Spotify. "Back in Black" Hits Half a Decade AC/DC sat in twenty-fourth place on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart just last frame, and the band occupies the same slot this time around, but with a different tune. Days ago, "Back in Black" landed in second-to-last place, but as that track celebrates half a decade — or exactly 260 frames — on the streaming-only roster, it advances to No. 22. "You Shook Me All Night Long" only needs a few more months to reach that milestone.

Oasis: five favourite hits

Five best-loved classics from the bad boys of 1990s Britpop Oasis, who make their long-awaited comeback with a reunion tour kicking off in Cardiff on Friday: - 'Supersonic' (1994) - The first Oasis single released was from their inaugural album "Definitely Maybe" and penned, as with most of their songs, by Noel Gallagher. It features brother Liam's distinctive singing style: holding and drawing out a syllable, with a touch of his Manchester accent coming through. In a Vogue interview in 2019, Liam named "Supersonic" the song he liked best from the band's repertoire and it contained his all-time favourite lyrics: "I need to be myself/I can't be no one else/I'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic". - 'Live Forever' (1994) - The Manchester band's breakthrough hit came with their third single, which was their first to reach the top 10 in the UK charts. The single cover was a photo of Beatles legend John Lennon's childhood home -- the band Oasis often compared themselves to and to whom they would be compared. "It was the tune that changed everything," Noel recalled in an interview in 2009. The upbeat track, with lyrics such as "I just wanna fly" and "I don't wanna die", were written partly in reaction to the negative message of grunge. In particular Nirvana's song "I Hate Myself and Want to Die" irked the young songwriter Noel. "Kids don't need to hear that nonsense," he later said. - 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' (1994) - But life-affirming optimism was not exactly a running Oasis theme, already clear from their next single and now one of their all-time classics. In their concerts it is the most performed of all their songs, featuring 645 times, according to the programmes of 837 concerts published by analysed by AFP. The track captured the band's image as bad boys, a reputation that would solidify over the next decade till their break-up in 2009. It included lines such as: "You could wait for a lifetime/To spend your days in the sunshine/You might as well do the white line." Questioned about the example the song might be setting for young fans, the brothers said it was not about glorifying bad behaviour. "It's a feeling you get when you are on the dole and you've got no money, maybe to escape from your surroundings, that all you have is cigarettes and alcohol," Noel said on "The O Zone" in 1994. - 'Wonderwall' (1995) - "And after all/You're my wonderwall" -- the refrain is so familiar even non-fans are likely able to belt it out. The song was taken from their second of seven studio albums, and by far the band's most successful: "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" shifted over 20 million copies globally. A 1960s film with the same title, and featuring music by Beatle George Harrison, had been an inspiration for the contemplative song, which includes prominent mellotron that sounds like a cello. Looking back, the Gallaghers struggled to understand the huge success of the track. "Every time I have to sing it I want to gag," Liam told MTV in 2008, according to The Guardian. But in 2012 he did reprise it for the Olympics closing ceremony in London, performing without Noel. - 'Don't Look Back in Anger' (1996) - One of the rare tracks with Noel on lead vocals, this pensive song is the second most featured in 837 concerts. It came out towards the end of Oasis's heady mid-1990s when they were at the peak of their fame. As a mark of their status in British culture extending well beyond the music scene, when recently elected Prime Minister Tony Blair entered Downing Street in 1997, the fresh-faced leader invited the band for celebratory drinks and Noel was captured in a now-famous image with Blair, both sipping a glass of wine. "I was 30, off me head on drugs, and everyone telling me we were the greatest band since who knows," Noel said to Spin magazine in 2008 about that time. The place of "Don't Look Back in Anger" in the public imagination was clear decades after its release, in 2017, following a bombing at a Manchester pop concert that killed 22 people. A grieving crowd spontaneously sang the song's now-poignant lyrics after a minute's silence in the city centre for the victims, days after the attack. eab/jj/phz/kjm

Donald Trump to Host UFC Fight on White House Grounds: What to Know

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. President Donald Trump has said he is thinking of hosting an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence next year. Trump said the event would be a "full fight" with about 20,000 to 25,000 people in attendance. "So every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250. And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight," the president said during a speech at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on Thursday. Newsweek contacted the White House and UFC for comment by email outside regular working hours. President Donald Trump at a rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on July 3. President Donald Trump at a rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on July 3. Alex Brandon/AP Why It Matters Trump, an enthusiast for the sport, has attended multiple mixed martial arts matches in recent months and is a friend of Dana White, the UFC's president. The unprecedented White House event forms part of Trump's broader effort to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday, which is also expected to feature national ceremonies, military flyovers and special programs at national parks. Trump has also described plans for the "Great American State Fair," a nationwide series of events culminating on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Each state would have a pavilion to showcase its culture and contributions. What To Know Speaking in Iowa on Thursday, Trump said: "We're going to have a UFC fight, think of this, on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there." "Dana is going to do it," he continued, adding, "We are going to have a UFC fight—championship fight, full fight, like 20-25,000 people—and we are going to do that as part of 250 also." White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed after the speech that Trump was "dead serious" about hosting the event. Trump has regularly attended UFC fights, most recently last month in Newark, New Jersey. He also attended a fight in Miami in April. Trump's friendship with White goes back to at least 2001, when he allowed the UFC to hold a fight at his Trump Taj Mahal hotel in Atlantic City. White also introduced Trump at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last July. What People Are Saying A UFC official told CNN: "We are in discussions with the White House about hosting a UFC event on site." President Donald Trump said during his Memorial Day address in May: "We're gonna have a big, big celebration, as you know, 250 years. … In some ways, I'm glad I missed that second term where it was because I wouldn't be your president for that." Monica Crowley, the chief of protocol of the U.S., said: "We've had so much division and so much polarization over the last many decades, but certainly over the last few years, that to be able to bring the country together to celebrate America's 250th birthday through patriotism, shared values and a renewed sense of civic pride, to be able to do that in the center of the country, is incredibly important." What Happens Next Officials have not yet confirmed a date for the proposed UFC fight or provided logistic details.
