Green Tax slashed in Andhra Pradesh; ₹275 crore support for mango and cocoa Farmers

The Hindu09-07-2025
The Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet, in its meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday, decided to take the Ordinance route to amend the A.P. Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1963, significantly reducing the Green Tax for transport vehicles.
I&PR Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy said the move would lower the tax rates for transport vehicles and commercial goods carriage vehicles (excluding small three-wheelers under 3,000 kg laden weight), setting them at ₹1,500 and ₹3,000 annually, instead of linking them to the vehicles' quarterly tax rate. This decision is expected to benefit nearly 9.56 lakh vehicle owners, he said.
The previous YSRCP-led government had increased the green tax from a nominal ₹200 per annum to a punitive slab system based on the vehicle's age. From January 2022, trucks aged 7 to 10 years were charged half the quarterly tax, 10 to 12 years were charged the full quarterly tax, and those over 12 years were burdened with double the quarterly tax—amounting to nearly Rs. 20,000 per year for some.
The Cabinet also approved financial assistance for cocoa and mango cultivators, especially those from the drought-prone regions of the State. The government will procure 2,976.76 metric tonnes of unsold cocoa beans at ₹50 a kg, releasing ₹14.88 crore as support price.
It approved the procurement of 6.5 lakh metric tonnes of Totapuri mangoes from farmers in undivided Chittoor district. The fruit will be purchased at a support price of ₹4 a kg, with the State allocating ₹260 crore for the initiative. This aims to stabilse prices, ensure fair returns, and encourage sustainable cultivation, he added.

Migrant worker's son and wife beaten by Delhi police; Mamata Banerjee posts video

Kolkata July 27 (UNI): A migrant worker's wife and young son, who had travelled from West Bengal to Delhi in search of work, were allegedly assaulted by the police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested against the incident by posting a video on social media. Launching an attack against the BJP-led Central Government and the ruling party in Delhi, she wrote, "Even a child is not spared from linguistic terrorism." In the video shared by the Chief Minister, a young man is seen showing injury marks on his young son's body, saying, "Look what they have done to my son. The police beat him and injured his forehead." He is also heard alleging in the video that all their essential belongings were thrown away. The man's wife also appears in the video. Pointing to her, the man says, "She too was beaten badly." However, the video has not been independently verified by UNIthand itr also does not have . Posting the video, the chief minister wrote, 'See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the Bengalis! Where are they taking our country now?' The Trinamool Congress has stepped up its protest following reports of harassment faced by migrant workers from Bengal working in other states. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also warned of a larger movement if harassment of migrant workers is not stopped. The allegation is that Bengali-speaking workers, suspected of being Bangladeshis, are being detained in BJP-ruled states like Odisha, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh—even after showing documents like Aadhaar and voter ID cards. In such cases, only a 'Police Clearance Certificate' (PCC) seems to secure their release; otherwise, they are being detained. The harassment of Bengali migrant workers in Delhi and Odisha has already reached the Calcutta High Court. Against this backdrop, the ruling party in West Bengal, Trinamool, has launched a 'language movement' against the BJP starting Sunday. Tomorow Mamata Banerjee is set to participate in the Nanur Dibas program in Birbhum and will also take part in a march. She is supposed to leave for Birbhum by road on Sunday evening. UNI XC SSP

3 killed as gunmen fire at protesters in Pakistans Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province

Peshawar, Jul 27 (PTI) Unknown gunmen fired at a gathering protesting against counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan's northwestern province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, leaving three dead and many injured, a top official said. A day earlier, a mortar strike claimed the life of a girl in the Zakha Khel area of the Khyber District, sparking the Sunday demonstration, during which locals placed the girl's body in front of the Momand Ghuz security checkpoint. Suhail Afridi, the special assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, said three people died and eight were injured in the firing by terrorists on the demonstrators in the Tirah Valley. Following the incident, the grieving families and residents of the area staged a protest by blocking the Tank-South Waziristan Road, and demanded immediate identification and action against those responsible for the killings. Afridi said, 'Following the girl's death on Saturday, locals staged a protest in front of the Frontier Corps compound today. They had gathered near he gates when shots were fired." 'I spoke to district officials who told me that terrorists belonging to Fitna-al-Khawarij fired at the protesters," he said, using the term designating members of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province expressed deep sorrow and regret over the Tirah incident. Lenskart receives shareholder nod to raise ₹2,150 crore via IPO: Report

Lenskart IPO: Peyush Bansal-led Indian eyewear company Lenskart has received the approval of its shareholder to raise ₹ 2,150 crore through a fresh issue of shares, reported MoneyControl, citing people aware of the development. According to news report, the company filed its corporate action development with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs' (MCA) Registrar of Companies (RoC), as per the data accessed by TheKredible. The proposal to raise money via an IPO was reportedly given the green light at the company's annual general meeting on 26 July 2025, said the report, adding, the eyewear company is expected to file its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with the capital markets regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), in the upcoming days. The overall IPO size is expected to be around $1 billion or ₹ 8,500 crore, which includes a secondary offer-for-sale (OFS) component by the existing investors, the report added. Earlier this month, Mint reported that the eyewear company's founder, Peyush Bansal, is looking to buy a 1.5-2% stake in the eyewear retailer worth about $150 million from existing investors ahead of its planned IPO. Peyush is buying small stakes from a bunch of investors. This is being negotiated at around $7-8 billion valuation. Existing investors like TR Capital, Chiratae, Softbank and Kedaara Capital are expected to sell their stake as part of the deal. Over the years, the company has raised $1.08 billion in funding across 19 rounds, including its latest Series I round for $18.2 million on 21 July 2023. It has received investments from various firms, including SoftBank Vision Fund, TPG, and Chiratae Ventures. Kotak Mahindra Capital, Axis Capital, Citi, Morgan Stanley, and Avendus Capital are the company-appointed book-runners for the IPO, which is soon expected to hit Dalal Street. The company was founded in 2010, and since then, it has emerged as one of the biggest players in the Indian eyewear industry. It has 2500 retail outlets across the nation and a presence globally, such as in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
